About Alan

Alan is a professional historian and teacher.  He taught for decades before return to the University of Toronto to write a dissertation on Technology and Change in 19th century North America involving three different disciplines…history, fine arts and engineering.  He has authored or co-authored a number of history books, the latest being “Your Home on Native Land” which examines the often thorny history of European / First Nations relationships.  In 1999, he won the Governor General’s Award for outstanding teaching of Canadian History and before that he won the Marshall McLuhan award for skill in communicating.  Both awards are at once a source of great pride and also humbling for Alan is well aware there are many North Americans as worthy or more so.
