ERIN TOWNSHIP, WELLINGTON COUNTY, 5063 FIFTH LINE: HARDSCRABBLE FARMING WITH RED SKEOCH AND HIS SON
DAD may have called me A ‘goddamn fool’ but he did not mean it. Actually he loved fooling around with the old horse drawn junk I bought at auction sales.
“Keep the goddamn tractor in a straight line, I’ll manage the plow. I could do a lot better with a team of horses that’s for sure.”
I bought this Farmall A from Mr. Fox when he retired. it ran beautifully for that one glorious summer then winter came and I parked it by the back house.
That was a mistake. Big mistake. I did not know that there was no anti freeze in the radiator. First really cold day split the block … the tractor never went again. For a few weeks I was depressed then soldiered on when at Mr. Smith’s auction i was able to get an International W6 for $400 which kept Dad and I occupied fooling around for a decade or more.
