(I like to put a little test in my stories just to discover who really reads the stories…I suspect most
people just zip through the pictures and press delete. The test: Who bought the Clipper Fanning mill?)
Note: The following dialogue is just me talking to myself but based on the experience.
BARGAIN…IF ANYONE HAS ROOM FOR IT

ar Bryan Marshall farm sale
Fifth line south of Milton
(circa 1970 International Harvester / McCormick 91 combine harvester)
“Combine looks like it just from the Showroom floor.”
“Too small for today’s fields…half a century ago it was
a prize machine.”
“Not anymore.”
“We hauled it out of the barn…white with dust…Combine hadn’t been used for couple of decades.”
“Wash her down…show off the red paint and the decals…might up the price at the auction”
“in that case let’s get a mechanic to see it it will still run.”
“The mechanic was even a bit startled when he charged the battery and turned the key…”
“Ignition…we have ignition, Bryan”
“Amazing…running like a top…lifting and lowering the cylinder…backward and forward…Like it had been waiting for this moment for a long time.”
“Let’s polish it up…”
“Still won’t sell for much you know…obsolete.”
“Don’t care…sell it for a song…but hope it goes to a home rather than the scrap yard.”
“OK. boys, Bryan Marshall has shown you that this combine is in top shape…older model I know…what will you bid?”
“$200…$250…$400…$500.”
“Sold for $500”
“Who bought it, Bryan?”
“Guy with small bit of land…hobby farmer…came to visit the other day and said he
did not plan to pay a lot.”
“I told him it will go for a song…and it did.”
“nice to know it will not go to the scrap yard”
“That’s the way I feel.”
“And so another Ontario farm…a big successful farm…goes out of food production…the land lost to new condos and row housing.”
“Cannot stop progress, can we?”
“Nope…but in fifty years UN report says there will not be enough food to feed the human population.”
“Bleak situation in Canada and the US…particularly the United States.”
“How come?”
“American have 10% of the world’s arable land yet lost 31 million acres of farmland to development between 1992 and 29012.”
“Wow…”
“You bet…the loss is 175 acres go arable land per hour…or, stated mother way, the loss is 3 acres per minute.”
“11 million of best arable land in the world is gone.”
“And Canada?”
“We are losing farmers at an alarming rate and those remaining are getting older.”
“Progress is not always pretty…those fields on the Marshall farm are top agricultural land…perfect
for crops…cleared for heavy machinery.”
“Look empty to me.”
“Not for long.”
“Why?”
“Developers own the land now…ready for new housing.”
“No more giant squash under a summer sun…last garden crops is just
waiting for the first frost.
“Coming tonight according to the weather people.”
“Spells a double loss…land gone from production…giant squash to freeze into mush.”
“So who is going to buy your machinery if all this land…flat and fertile as far as my eye can see…if all this land
is going to be part of the new Milton .. no longer the quaint country town … a few big corporate farms renting development
land but none of the family farms of the past. Who will buy your machinery?”
“My big tractor brought $59,000, ‘almost what I paid for it.’”
“Great…”
“And the rest of the machinery sold up and down like it does at any farm auction.”
“The fanning mill…a Clipper…sold for $30…screens were in the garage.”
“what will happen to all those barns?”
“Mennonite crew already taking down the light barn…expect it will be gone tonight.”
“And the big barns?”
“Maybe Mennonites will get them as well…hope they do.”
“Otherwise?”
“Demolished…maybe some of those great hand made beams will become fashionable furniture.”
“Gone before the snow flies I expect.”
“Will you keep the house?”
“Nope…not staying…do not want to see everything come to an end…we are moving into a forest…no
more sunsets like this but that is fine…a new start as it were.”
“Wow, what a sunset.”
“Metaphor ?”
“Sort of a metaphor I guess.”
