{"id":8642,"date":"2021-04-29T10:36:24","date_gmt":"2021-04-29T14:36:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/?p=8642"},"modified":"2021-04-29T10:50:12","modified_gmt":"2021-04-29T14:50:12","slug":"episode-326-very-little-life-in-our-3-large-ponds-what-is-happening","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/?p=8642","title":{"rendered":"EPISODE 326   VERY LITTLE LIFE IN OUR 3 LARGE PONDS: WHAT IS HAPPENING?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>EPISODE 326 &nbsp; VERY LITTLE LIFE IN OUR 3 LARGE PONDS: WHAT IS HAPPENING?<\/p>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">alan skeoch<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">april 2021<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"D48E7E4A-14B1-4220-9D41-0343EDC0CC49\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_b96b.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"AD558854-5E56-46D5-BCFA-37BC88BB1632\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_befc.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">SOMETHING BAD IS HAPPENING TO OUR 3 FAR PONDS<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">SURE\u2026WE ARE CONCERNED. &nbsp;YOU SHOULD BE AS WELL.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">It is hard for us to read about the importance of ponds..wetlands\u2026in local ecology. &nbsp;We know how<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">important wetlands are to all kinds of creatures. &nbsp;And we have made sure our farm ponds are not<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">touched. &nbsp;As a matter of fact these ponds are much larger than the days when my grandparents tried<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">to eke out a bare subsistence living on our 25 acre farm. &nbsp;Today the ponds occupy about 7 to 8 acres<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">of the land. &nbsp; No vile chemicals drain from local fields into the wetland.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">But where has all the pond life gone? &nbsp; We will never know that. &nbsp; Perhaps a better questions is \u201cWhy has<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">pond life diminished catastrophically over the past three decades or longer. &nbsp;There was a time when I was<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">a boy that the frog population was immense. &nbsp;Hard to take a step on the pond margins without a hurricane of<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">frogs jumping helter skelter. &nbsp; Today we have a few frogs\u2026Leopards mostly\u2026but we have to look for them<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">carefully. &nbsp; With few frogs we have fewer snakes. &nbsp; A decade ago garter snakes bred in the flower pots in the<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">green house. Today? &nbsp;I have not seen one yet (April 29, 2021).<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">I wince every time a Great Blue Heron lands on our pond margins. &nbsp;Seeking frogs. &nbsp;We do &nbsp;not have enough<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">to feed that interesting bird. &nbsp;So the life of many creatures is now restricted leading to the die off that no one<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">notices.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Large creatures are still here but in reduced numbers. &nbsp;We still have a home for a big snapping turtle. &nbsp;Canada<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">geese return each year to raise a brood. &nbsp;Sometimes their previous progeny join them and are hustled away by<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the parents. &nbsp;Five years ago we had a healthy population of painted turtles\u202620 or 30, all sizes\u2026then suddenly<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">we found turtle carapaces in the farm field and today we only have a few living in the big pond. &nbsp;Something happened to our turtle<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">breeding ground at the eastern end of the big pond which also happens to be the break point where drainage<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">flows to the Grand River (ultimately). &nbsp;Our wetlands are the final height of land for the Grand River watershed.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Coyotes are here\u2026and deer\u2026and wild turkeys. &nbsp;They seem fine. &nbsp;Although all we see are their tracks and<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the occasional fluffing noise as a turkey family shuffles out of view.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Small water life has &nbsp;just about disappeared. &nbsp;There are no leaches. &nbsp;None? &nbsp;There was a time when we<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">had so many that it was a concern. &nbsp;Needed a supply of salt to get them off after a swim.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp;Today none. &nbsp;We still have dragon flies\u2026that ancient survivor of life on earth\u2026<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">but not as many. &nbsp; Little bugs like water spiders and back swimmers are few in number if they even exist.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">And honey bees seem OK but they are managed by humans.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">My question? &nbsp; Will pond life return. &nbsp;Will the small creatures at the bottom of the food chain repopulate our<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">ponds naturally. &nbsp;Or is climate change about to turn the world I knew upside down?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">I think I will send this note to the Grand River Conservation people. &nbsp; Maybe they have an answer.<\/div>\n<div rgb(0, 0, 68); color: rgb(0, 0, 68); font-family: -webkit-standard;\" class=\"\">Ponds are places where cyanophytes still gleam with bubbles of pure oxygen, as they did two billion years ago. They are places where dragonflies still live as they did when they dominated the air 300 million years ago. Ponds are conservation in action.<\/p>\n<p style=\"caret-color: rgb(0, 0, 68); color: rgb(0, 0, 68); font-family: -webkit-standard;\" class=\"\">Ponds are the whole world for many fascinating aquatic insects &#8211; whirligig beetles, backswimmers, water striders. They attract many of our favourite birds &#8211; swallows, flycatchers, wrens, ducks. But, they are a special boon to frogs.
