{"id":7667,"date":"2021-02-26T20:06:58","date_gmt":"2021-02-27T01:06:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/?p=7667"},"modified":"2021-02-26T20:20:54","modified_gmt":"2021-02-27T01:20:54","slug":"episode-265-maple-syrup-time-part-one-getting-the-sap-the-halcyon-days","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/?p=7667","title":{"rendered":"EPISODE 265    MAPLE SYRUP TIME   PART ONE:  GETTING THE SAP&#8230;THE HALCYON DAYS"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>EPISODE 265 &nbsp; &nbsp; MAPLE SYRUP TIME &nbsp; PART ONE: &nbsp;GETTING THE SAP\u2026THE HALCYON DAYS<\/p>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">alan skeoch<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Feb. 2021<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"90D50B46-C21B-43E3-BF42-A79C19C06207\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_9ec10.jpg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Those soft winter days are nearly here. &nbsp;End of February, beginning of March. &nbsp;Maple Syrup making time<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">when those emblems of Canada, our thousands and thousands of sugar maple trees<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">are sniffing the air and sending a message to their root systems.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cNOTICE&#8230;Time for sugar to move up the tree trunk. &nbsp;Soon be needed<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">for life to begin again. &nbsp;Sleepy time is over.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp; That is maple tree talk\u2026the branches telling<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the roots to start generating sap. &nbsp;The message is relayed via the thin communicating system<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">between the bark and the wood. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">And I was determined to intervene\u2026to \u2018bleed\u2019 off some of that life blood of some<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">of those maple trees.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp;SYSTEM\u2026MAKING MAPLE SYRUP<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"0EC6CB7E-382C-42AF-A42A-F8D3416CF775\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_9f849.jpg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cMarjorie, let\u2019s see if we can make maple syrup. &nbsp;Something to do&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">in the gap between winter and spring\u2026cheaper than skiing and<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">we\u2019ll end up with s gallon or two of pancake syrup\u2026our own hand<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">made maple syrup. &nbsp;Better than the store bought stuff maybe.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cWhere will you find enough trees? &nbsp;Not enough on our farm.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cThe Saunders farm runs right across to the Fourth Line where<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">they have about 20 acres of maples\u2026.I\u2019ll ask Lorne if he is<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">willing to let us tap a few of his trees.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"AE74F1E2-E82C-4E6B-B5C9-25F3270F253D\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_9efe9.jpg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Some farm laneways remain lined with mature maple trees for a good reason. &nbsp;Maple syrup<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cYou certainly have enough sap pails. &nbsp;How many<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">trees will you tap?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cMaybe twenty or so. &nbsp; I have about 200<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">sap pails and &nbsp;lids. &nbsp; About the same amount of spiles\u2026way<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">more than we can ever use in a lifetime.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">And so began a wonderful adventure. &nbsp;Making maple syrup. &nbsp;Earthy<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">March when the snow was beginning to melt on some days then<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">new snow falling on other days. &nbsp;What a grand time to be outdoors.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Week end work mostly but some weekdays as &nbsp;well which meant<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">I had to rush from teaching high school at Parkdale C.I. in the heart&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">of Toronto to my maple trees on Fourth Line of Erin Township, Wellington<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">County. &nbsp;On days when the sap would be running. &nbsp;Warm days\u2026cool warm<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">days. I know it sounds like a contradiction.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">I was not alone. Tara, our coonhound, Marjorie, the kids\u2026Kevin and Andrew\u2026<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">and sometimes Phil Sharp one of my fellow history teachers. &nbsp; So the truck<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">was loaded &nbsp;but still had room for the milk cans of maple sap. &nbsp;Milk cans?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Along with the sap pails, I had bought about 10 or 15 milk cans\u2026big 10 or<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">15 gallon cans with pop up tops. &nbsp; These big cans were needed to haul<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the sap from maple bush to the truck using a heavy sleight.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br SIDES<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">-1 FINISHING TROUGH<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">-PILE OF CROWN SEALING BOTTLES WITH LIDS AND RINGS<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">-PILE OF WOOD FOR FIREPLACE<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">-SOME BOULDERS TO KEEP SAP PANS ABOVE FIRE PIT<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">-MAPLE SAP THERMOMETER\u2026<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">-PILE OF FILTERS AND &nbsp;MILK CAN FILTERS<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">-GAS \u2026ENOUGH TO DRIVE UP TO THE FARM<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">AND BACK TO THE CITY THREE TIMES A WEEK<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">(This venture was not cost effective\u2026cost more than it was worth<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">was the conclusion of my critics)<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">The system worked well for three or four years and then<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">came to a abrupt end. &nbsp; So I will treat the story into two parts.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">First were the halcyon days of sap collecting. &nbsp; Dream of those<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">days on March evenings\u2026still do.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" When the forest floor was covered with wild garlic.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Easy to identify\u2026smell, taste, look. &nbsp;Thousands of the spear like plants suddenly emerged in early spring. &nbsp;carpeted forest<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">floor in green.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cI was reading that wild garlic is a fine medicinal herb\u2026eases toothache, sore eyes, colds, coughs, \u2026fends off warts, measles,<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">mumps and rheumatism.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cIf it\u2019s that good why have we never seen anyone picking wild garlic?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201clook around \u2026lots of people eat wild garlic. &nbsp;Recipes easy to find on the internet. &nbsp; The plant grows in deep forest in late<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">winter or early spring\u2026when the wild garlic appears, I know the maple sap season is over.
