{"id":7658,"date":"2021-02-25T10:31:27","date_gmt":"2021-02-25T15:31:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/?p=7658"},"modified":"2021-02-25T10:39:31","modified_gmt":"2021-02-25T15:39:31","slug":"episode-262-the-year-1956-when-we-were-young-and-owned-the-world-around-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/?p=7658","title":{"rendered":"EPISODE 262    THE YEAR 1956: WHEN WE WERE YOUNG AND OWNED THE WORLD AROUND US"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>EPISODE 262 &nbsp; &nbsp; THE YEAR 1956 WHEN WE WERE YOUNG AND OWNED THE WORLD AROUND US<\/p>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">alan &nbsp;skeoch<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Feb. 2021<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Ah! &nbsp;Wonderful! &nbsp;When we were young and &nbsp;anxiously awaited the March Break to go camping<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">on the banks of Etobicoke Creek\u2026a wasteland of mysteriously abandoned farms with empty barns<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">and &nbsp;brick farm houses . &nbsp;Nobody around. &nbsp;As if some mysterious disease had &nbsp;wiped out all living<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">things \u2026 a plague \u2026 a &nbsp;pandemic. &nbsp; And we arrived free of any contagion to document this empty&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">land.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Russ Vanstone, Eric Skeoch and me. &nbsp;Just three of us on this venture. &nbsp;We got to the \u201cLand &nbsp;Where&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Nobody &nbsp;Lives Anymore\u201d &nbsp;by hitchhiking and public &nbsp;bus from West Toronto. &nbsp; Packed for three or four<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">days. &nbsp;Sleeping bags, food, camera and bits &nbsp;and pieces of winter clothing that we hoped would<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">be unnecessary.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">The dead horse had floated down near out campsite as if to confirm the mysterious plague\u2026pandemic\u2026imaginary<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">interpretation as to why the land was empty. &nbsp; Corpse still frozen. &nbsp;No smell. &nbsp; The only smells were those<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">of the land getting ready for spring\u2026a damp, coming alive, kind of smell. &nbsp; Lots of wood on the creek<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">banks &nbsp;for our campfire. &nbsp;Great slabs of fossilized shale\u2026Ordovician, 500 million years old with tiny whitish<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">things that once were alive. &nbsp;Those slabs were beds for us. &nbsp;Not sure if we had air mattresses.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp;I wonder if the future explorers on Mars &nbsp;will have the same feeling we did.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Endless adventure ahead.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"9F35A263-5D08-4873-A6CC-71EEBB68D71E\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/yLM9j0m6SOOWzwHrtM2IAw_thumb_9dbee.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">YEAR 1956: THREE ADVENTURERS ON THE EMPTY LAND CALLED ETOBICOKE\u2026RIGHT TO LEFT\u2026RUSS VANSTONE,<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">ERIC SKEOCH, ALAN SKEOCH<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">YEAR 2021: I &nbsp;NEVER GO BACK TO ETOBICOKE, ESPECIALLY NOT TO ETOBICOKE CREEK. &nbsp;THERE IS NO WILDERNESS<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">LEFT. &nbsp;THAT ENDED WHEN THE SOMMERVILLE BLACKSMITH SHOP WAS DEMOLISHED AND THE BULL DOZERS MOVED<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">NORTH FROM DUNDAS TO BURNHAMTHORPE ROAD. &nbsp; I NEVER GO BACK THERE. &nbsp;I LIKE &nbsp;TO KEEP MY IMAGINARY WORLD INTACT.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">alan skeoch<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Feb. 2021<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>EPISODE 262 &nbsp; &nbsp; THE YEAR 1956 WHEN WE WERE YOUNG AND OWNED THE WORLD AROUND US alan &nbsp;skeoch Feb. 2021 Ah! &nbsp;Wonderful! &nbsp;When we were young and &nbsp;anxiously awaited the March Break to go camping on the banks of Etobicoke Creek\u2026a wasteland of mysteriously abandoned farms with empty barns and &nbsp;brick farm houses .
