We never complained to a cook. \u00a0Had we done so we would never get a cook. \u00a0Those are socks on the guideline. \u00a0Meat was always strung high in a tree to discourage bears. \u00a0Garbage \u00a0was burned. \u00a0Dishes were washed. Socks were Most important pieces \u00a0of clothing. Water was dangerous as streams may have had arsenic, cadmium, certainly lead in<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the water. \u00a0Easier to drink beer and safer.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Monday July 16, 1962<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Breakfast of Prem*, orange \u00a0juice, crackers, cheese snd \u00a0coffee then \u00a0began packing. \u00a0Mailed books to mom and Marjorie then met Henry who insisted I have coffee with him. \u00a0Nice.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">(*we called it Clap)<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">In \u00a0the pouring rain we loaded the 1953 \u00a0Dodge \u00a0Power \u00a0wagon again for the Silver Titan job.\u00a0 then \u00a0drove to Cecils&#8217; where we were surprised to find a brand new \u00a0campsite..neat\u2026like a military camp\u2026new tents lined up with precision\u2026clean as a whistle.\u00a0 Had a delicious meal\u2026better than canned meat and sardines and pork and beans.\u00a0 Then got our new home \u00a0in order\u2026.12 x 14 foot tent with wood \u00a0walls and \u00a0floor. \u00a0 Old Ted Swanson supervised.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Bill Dunn arrived back in camp\u2026.we traded stories for an hour<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">expenses \u00a0Meals \u00a01.50<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Tuesday \u00a0July 17, 1962<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Got base line cable \u00a0ready \u00a0then drove to Proctor\u2019s and began stringing cable \u2026.. 12,000 \u00a0feet.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">A long and agonizing day\u2026reels weigh about 50 lbs. \u00a0Drove back to camp for gas and field books.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Started reading console for 20 stations\u2026..2,000 feet then had trouble with motor generator .<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Took picture of old shaft with windlass on top. \u00a0 System was strange. \u00a0In order to get to gold baring gravel the old placer miners had to dig vertical shafts through the permafrost.\u00a0 To do this they had to heat the ground in order to loosen the gravel from the icy grip of ancient frost. \u00a0Then haul the waste gravel up using the windlass and tub. \u00a0At least I think that was how it was done.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\" dir=\"auto\" style=\"word-wrap: break-word; -webkit-nbsp-mode: space; line-break: after-white-space;\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"direction: ltr;\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"5571789F-DD53-46A9-BF3C-9118A345A90D\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/IMG_7295.jpeg\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Wednesday July 18 \u00a01962<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Had 10 cable breaks in morning, but did manage 13,600 feet of line\u2026.2.72 miles.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Thursday, \u00a0July \u00a019, 1962<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Bills Scott, Bill Dunn and I had \u00a0a \u00a0successful day\u202614,300 feet read (2.86 miles). \u00a0The\u00a0bush was hot as hell<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"706BE9E6-004B-4B15-804B-A3D02BE20C1F\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_9578e.jpg\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Swimming was unusual. \u00a0Picture of \u00a0Bill Dunn and I swimming somewhere near our Silver Titan site.\u00a0 But we had taken time to make a raft so this picture does \u00a0not make sense \u00a0unless we found the raft already \u00a0made. \u00a0Pic shows Bill Dunn on the left. \u00a0Whose underwear needed cleaning the most?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">At four we knocked off and went for swim in a little lake\u2026good way to wash<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">our underwear. \u00a0Wonderful swim. \u00a0 \u00a0 Letters from home report that cucumbers and tomatoes \u00a0are good at farm.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Ed Jackman wrote (Dominican priest now) to report he is surrounded by Nuns.\u00a0 Drove to Elsa for ice cream only to find the store closed.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Friday, July 20, 1962<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Hard day in bush\u202619,000 feet .. 3.82 miles.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Returned to camp to find that Ted Swanson had shot a bear\u2026a grizzly. \u00a0 I just hate the worship of guns here in the Yukon . \u00a0No reason to shoot the bear\u2026.depressing to see the corpse on the trail. \u00a0Our company, Hunting Tech, does not include guns in bush camps\u2026a \u00a0&#8216;no no\u2019\u2026I remember asking Floyd Faulkner why ? \u00a0His answer.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cIf guns were in camps we would shoot each other.\u201d\u2026a joke but the joke has<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">some meaning. \u00a0Tensions can get high on some jobs. \u00a0That was especially so<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">on the Groundhog River job when three of us were in total wilderness isolation\u00a0for more than two months.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Drove to Mayo for a \u00a0milk shake made with 1 can of condensed milk slightly shaken.\u00a0 Lousy taste.\u00a0 Girls in Mayo gave me a rough time. \u00a0I forgot my pants were torn\u2026no underwear on\u2026kept winking at me\u2026sort of funny.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Saturday, July 21, 1962<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Rain for first two hours then Andy and I drove into the bush to begin work.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Good progress\u202612,500 line feet\u20262.5 miles.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\" dir=\"auto\" style=\"word-wrap: break-word; -webkit-nbsp-mode: space; line-break: after-white-space;\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"direction: ltr;\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"046655A2-5F94-488A-8C09-E87D5F062729\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/IMG_7307.jpeg\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">These plastic car coins were free in boxes of cereal. \u00a0 Good for rewards. \u00a0\u201cSpecial\u00a0award to A. Skeoch and team on August 23, 1962 for getting \u00a03 line miles done in the pouring rain.\u201d \u00a0 \u201cpresented by \u00a0Axel Doulis of Rio Plata Mines, Dublin Gulch&#8221;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Blueberries are ripe and ready for picking\u2026same applies to the swamp apples (which are too sweet\u2026different taste.} \u00a0At lunch Andy told me some hair raising stories about the Korean war and North Korean guerrillas operating behind the lines. \u00a0Andy drove supply trucks in convoy at night. NK guerrillas would jump on board the last truck\u2026.kill driver.\u00a0 Andy would jump off when that happened. \u00a0True? \u00a0False? \u00a0 Check the record.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Bill Dunn joined us in the afternoon reducing work load. \u00a0Henry Robichuck and Lionel Raltin awaited \u00a0us on the road by the truck \u00a0 They had been walking since 5.30 a.m. after their truck broke down on the Haggart Creek road. \u00a0 Hardly a road since a good part is the riverbed. \u00a0I drove them to camp hen Bob Gilroy took them on to Mayo.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Sunday, \u00a0July 22, 1962<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Overcast but no rain. \u00a0Bugs will be bad. \u00a0 Bill Dunn and I got a good start. We did 14,000 line feet\u20262.82 mlles. \u00a0 Motor cut out twice.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Andy\u2019s feet have been terribly mangled by \u00a0his boots\u2026cuts&#8230; open \u00a0 wounds to the tendons it seems and quite infected. \u00a0 He is frightened at any suggestion that he see a doctor.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">The mosquitoes are sons bitches. we spent the lunch break enveloped in smoke from a smudge fire to keep the little bastards at bay. \u00a0I think we ate more smoke than food.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"3BEFB79D-8F9E-40D8-BE80-55818A01EF51\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_9577b.jpg\" \/><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">No danger of a forest fire\u2026everything was soaking wet including us. \u00a0 Smoke discouraged mosquitoes.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Returned to camp at 4 p.m. and began building my packing case to ship to Toronto much to the amusement of Ted. \u00a0 \u00a0Then John Strebchuck asked for a lift to Alex Smith\u2019s place \u2026took nearly an hour to get there&#8230; through Keno City road which was treacherous . \u00a0 Then gathered up some of the old 1920\u2019s wall paper from a roadhouse that was \u00a0being torn down. Roadhouse is a flattering term. \u00a0In the mid 1920\u2019s this had been a kind of hotel\u2026two to a bed. \u00a0Man\u00a0above leaked something onto old man Wernecke while snooker guy arrived to share the lower bunk. \u00a0 Copies \u00a0of \u00a0News of the World, 1916-1919 pasted to walls \u00a0as insulation.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">My eyes are quite sore for some reason.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Monday July 23, 1962<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">The \u00a0heavens \u00a0opened up today\u2026full day of \u00a0rain. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Got up, ate breakfast and went back to bed for an hour. \u00a0 Luxury. \u00a0Spent the afternoon reading, writing and adding to my diary.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">The foreman \u00a0of the diamond drill crew came into our tent and we spent time\u00a0talking politics. \u00a0 In the afternoon Bill drove to Mayo to phone Rosemary long distance ($8.75) \u00a0while I relaxed with my copy of Klondike and the Star Weekly (sent by Marjorie).\u00a0 Then finished my packing case.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"361052A7-BF95-40EF-94A1-2ECFA6210C41\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_9d8db-1.jpg\" \/><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Bill Dunn examining diamond drill core at Silver Titan geologist\u2019s shack.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">At supper one of the fellows suggested the beef be wrapped in brown paper\u2026to give the Wrigley gum people some competition. \u00a0 Ted dumped sugar bowl all over\u2026mess. Andy got cake icing all over his face. \u00a0Mess.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Bill Scott arrived back at camp with mail from Marjorie\u2026to letters plus a Huckleberry Hound pin. \u00a0Amusing. \u00a0Bill also brought the old pick, shovel and axe that I left in the Chateau Inn after finding them in an old mine adit when \u00a0Moses \u00a0Lord, Dinky and I found an old adit entrance from the 1920\u2019s. Drove back to\u00a0camp and \u00a0had \u00a0a slice of lemon meringue pie before crawling \u00a0into my damp sleeping bag. \u00a0 Nights \u00a0are getting \u00a0colder and it is only nearly end of July. \u00a0 Hot days sometimes.\u00a0 \u00a0Cold nights most times.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Ted Scanson told story of an old man on one \u00a0bush job \u2026a man who never washed his plate. \u00a0\u201creversed the plate for each meal\u2026had a heap of driedfoodi on each side\u201d Sometimes we must get close to that.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Wednesday July 25, 1962<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Most frustrating \u00a0day. \u00a0 Only got 4,300 feet done. \u00a0Trouble \u00a0with the battery connection\u2026.\u00a0 off and on\u2026short circuit or maybe \u00a0moisture\u2026slowed us to a crawl \u2026long time at each picket just to get signal. \u00a0 Really hard to make repairs when off and on signals.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Returned to camp in hell of a mood\u2026cursing. \u201cLast time I will ever work with this goddamn Turam\u201d etc. etc. \u00a0Cooled down once I realized the problem was repairable.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Ontario College of Education information arrived. \u00a0I will be a teacher in the future\u2026sort of hard to believe. \u00a0 Love this life in the bush at times but it is only for the young.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Thursday July 26, \u00a01962<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Jack Gillies arrived in camp for breakfast\u2026drunk as \u00a0a skunk. While it was distressing to see him that way, it was also humorous. \u00a0Jack is a good natured drunk. \u00a0I have seen others who turn angry and dangerous but none of those yet in the Yukon.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">The console failed again and I spent the morning checking the circuitry\u2026found a broken connection and \u00a0soldered same. \u00a0 Meanwhile I had Bill Dunn and Andy coil up the base line. \u00a0Rain \u00a0came around \u00a0lunch \u00a0but we worked through it and had the base line coiled by 3.30.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Three packages from home and \u00a0Marjorie today one of \u00a0which was a bottle of wild raspberry jam, some cookies and magazines. To me at<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">that time I described \u00a0him as \u00a0\u201can elderly man in his 50\u2019s\u201d. \u00a0Today in<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">2021 I consider a man \u00a0in his 50\u2019s as young. \u00a0Hell, \u00a0our own kids are<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">in their 50\u2019s.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Friday July \u00a027, 1962<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cWho the hell is hammering on the door?\u201d \u00a0It was Bill Dunn\u2026cheerful<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">as usual. \u00a0 Had a good shower, washed my hair and put my dirty clothes<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">back \u00a0on once more. \u00a0We shared Marjorie\u2019s jam and cookies for breakfast.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Spent the morning walking around town and then packed our equipment in<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Al Trigg\u2019s truck. \u00a0 Then bought two little girls ice cream cones\u2026very cute<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">kids one of \u00a0which \u00a0belonged to the Gilroys. \u00a0Then Bill Scott and I got<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">into the back of the truck where Bill sat on the seismograph which gave<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">me a bit of a \u00a0worry.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Hans Buka was still not ready for us when we arrived. No tent had<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">been pitched, \u00a0His work team leaves \u00a0much to be desired. \u00a0Filthy.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Garbage dump is right beside their eating table. \u00a0Seem \u00a0to be eating<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">a diet consisting mostly of beans. \u00a0 Their latrine is non existent which<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">means the little white patches \u00a0here and there are toilet paper markers.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Perhaps I should not mention this. \u00a0When we set up a camp \u00a0we<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">designste s latrine spot immediately.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">No point in us staying so we came back to the motel with Al. \u00a0He told \u00a0us how his mom was killed in an avalanche last winter. \u00a0Ten miles \u00a0by snowshoe at -40 degrees\u2026 tragedy made the national \u00a0news.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">After supper at Luigi\u2019s we joined the Mayo Landing volunteer fire department to breakfast while I read.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Hans Buhr picked us up in the Land Rover at 11 a.m. and \u00a0drove us to the job site. \u202660 miles\u2026we stopped en route to look at his D9 bulldozer which was \u00a0sinking into a muskeg bog.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Arrived at the camp at 1.10 \u2026 disgusted by the filth. \u00a0Garbage all around..i.e.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">bacon rinds under feet at cook tent\u2026empty food \u00a0cans \u00a0and broken bottles\u2026and worse \u00a0i.e. the little white patches. \u00a0 Doing mining exploration may sound rough and dirty but really not so \u00a0bad. \u00a0We have standards. \u00a0This linocutting crew\u00a0did not have standards. \u00a0Nothing we could do about it.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">We immediately set up our motor generator and \u00a0associated equipment\u2026base line cable up the hill (more like s mountain than a hill) \u00a0 \u00a0 So steep that Andy nearly had a heart attack. \u00a0He is a constant worry\u2026really nice guy but his health\u00a0has been compromised\u2026terrified \u00a0of doctors.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">After that we had \u00a0to set up our own tent and get ready for bed.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Bill and Andy \u00a0decided to sleep outside the tent due to the heat.<\/div>\n<div legendary Yukoners. \u00a0 (see note from Aho book on Malecky AND story about Moses Lord)<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Then started the motor and left Ed to his trouble shooting examination of our equipment.\u00a0 He \u00a0was a disappointment by creating more troubles than he solved.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">We built a log pyramid \u00a0to take our
