BELOW are three 1954 pictures of the Oldsmobile 88.  The first picture was included<\/div>\n
because of the girl.   Sexy.   Bill\u2019s Olds 88 was black as I remember.<\/div>\n

Bill Mashtalar was the biggest boy in our Grade 8 class picture.  I never knew him<\/div>\n
really well but did consider him one of my friends.  His parents were Polish and<\/div>\n
lived in a grand home a few blocks away.  They must have had good jobs<\/div>\n
because the bought a big brand new Oldsmobile 88 about the time Bill and<\/div>\n
I were in Grade Eleven.<\/div>\n

\u201cAlan, do you want to go for a ride?\u201d<\/div>\n
\u2018In your new car?\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cOf course, just got my licence\u2026we could go down<\/div>\n
to High Park and see what\u2019s happening at night.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cHow?\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cThe Oldsmobile has a search light on it\u2026we can sneak up on<\/div>\n
lovers and catch them in the sudden beam\u2026should be fun.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cDangerous?\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cNah!  They\u2019ll think we\u2019re cops.\u201d<\/div>\n

Now the idea did not particularly appeal to me at the time<\/div>\n
but I was reticent to refuse since this was a big moment for<\/div>\n
Bill\u2026getting his licence and all.   So away we went in the<\/div>\n
darkness of a fall evening.  Maybe ten o\u2019clock.  About the<\/div>\n
right time for sexual activity to be at a peak.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
Bill drove slowly.  Low beams.  Until he spotted a car<\/div>\n
pulled off the roadway in High Park.  Well off the roadway<\/div>\n
and therefore a likely candidate for the spotlight beam.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
Bill slowed down, switched off his low beams\u2026crept up to<\/div>\n
where the target had left the road and then BOOM\u2026<\/div>\n
on came the hand held searchlight\u2026soon focused<\/div>\n
on the suspect.<\/div>\n

Not lovers.  A bunch of guys drinking.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
\u201cWhat the fuck!  You bastards!\u201d\u2026A string of solid obscenities<\/div>\n
direct our way.<\/div>\n
These guys did not think we were cops.<\/div>\n
\u201cQuick, let\u2019s get the bastards!\u201d\u2026and  four or five guys leapt<\/div>\n
into their car and slammed it into reverse.<\/div>\n

They wanted to get us\u2026and it was our fault.  If caught,<\/div>\n
the result would not be pretty.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
The chase was on.  Bill switched on the lights and<\/div>\n
accelerated as much as was possible on the High<\/div>\n
Park road. Down by Howard  House with its cannon aimed<\/div>\n
out at imaginary invaders.  Hard right turn onto the Queensway<\/div>\n
then a left fn right onto Lakeshore.<\/div>\n

The QEW was open at night\u2026clear running\u2026and the Olds 88 was opened up full throttle.  This pictures shows<\/div>\n
the QEW at rush hour in 1954.   <\/div>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll get on the QEW.  Speed up\u2026\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cThey are right behind us.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cPray we have green lights to the QEW\u2026we cannot stop.\u201d<\/div>\n

We were lucky\u2026all green.  We sped up he QEW ramp\u2026accelerating.<\/div>\n
No traffic.  \u201cWhere are they now?\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cRight behind us\u2026catching up.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cI\u2019ll open her up\u2026\u201d   Speeding\u202690\u2026100\u2026110\u2026heading<\/div>\n
for 120 mph.  Fast and getting faster.<\/div>\n

\u201cWhere are they now?\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cDropping back\u2026Lucky we have this Olds.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cWhere will we go?\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cBeyond Highway 27\u2026maybe as far as Highway 10, Port Credit.\u201d<\/div>\n

\u201cHow will we get home?\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cSlow\u2026Lakeshoe Road and side streets \u201c<\/div>\n
\u201cMaybe up to Bloor\u2026then home.\u201d<\/div>\n

Tail between our legs…<\/div>\n
We got home.  Exhausted.  Not much to say to each<\/div>\n
other.  Really embarrassed and lucky.<\/div>\n

So I have always had a softs spot for those Oldsmobile\u2019s\u202688\u2019s<\/div>\n
and 98\u2019s.  <\/div>\n

Now long gone.<\/div>\n
