&nbsp; Not so, their<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">home is likely under the submerged roots of some cedars and the four ran &nbsp;home<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">to their mommy.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">I was elated. &nbsp;Our swamps, of &nbsp;which we have four, seemed sort of &nbsp;empty of late since<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the frog population has &nbsp;been &nbsp;immensely reduced and &nbsp;even the leeches (bloodsuckers is<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">a better word) have disappeared. &nbsp; A &nbsp;pair of Canada geese raise a &nbsp;brood each year<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">but once the little ones are big enough, they disappear somewhere.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">So &nbsp;it was nice know the Muskrats have been thriving all the time. &nbsp;But unseen.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"5AE389B0-D715-4067-B567-F003F5C8A59A\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_9b781.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">THE SWAMP\u2026UNSEEN &nbsp;FOR 20 YEARS\u2026NOW VISIBLE\u2026AND ALIVE.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">I &nbsp;am partial to muskrats but the internet sure is &nbsp;not. &nbsp;The word \u2018pest\u2019 is used<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">a lot. &nbsp;Why? &nbsp;Well they can punch holes &nbsp;in dams but more serious is the presence<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">of rabies and &nbsp;other diseases. &nbsp;Scary. &nbsp;But the &nbsp;presence of rabies &nbsp;is &nbsp;not<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">exclusive to muskrats. &nbsp;So do &nbsp;not get your underwear in &nbsp;a twist. &nbsp;The internet<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">goes &nbsp;on to suggest poisons and &nbsp;traps &nbsp;to kill or capture the Muskrats.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Largely herbivorous, Muskrats like our human gardens. &nbsp;They are nocturnal raiders<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">whose presence can &nbsp;be deduced by the tracks \u2026 four small feet about size of<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">a cat and a long streak of the Muskrat tail in between. &nbsp; That may account for the&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">anger some of us have towards muskrats.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"348B6D26-E7FC-44DF-ABE6-CD06ECA7C241\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_9b66b.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">SOMETIMES we forget Woody\u2026he waits knowing we will remember him<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Personally I think &nbsp;these little beavers (related) are rather smart. &nbsp;One late afternoon<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">a few years ago we were driving home and had to turn around &nbsp;to go &nbsp;back to<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the farm. &nbsp;Maybe &nbsp;we forgot the dog, Woody. &nbsp;That happens occasionally. &nbsp;When<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">we drove in the farm lane, there was an adult muskrat on the pathway. &nbsp;He or she<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">must have waited &nbsp;all day for us to leave in order to get from one swamp to another\u2026particularly<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">to the hidden swamp.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">(I prefer the &nbsp;term pond because it sounds &nbsp;so &nbsp;attractive. &nbsp; But, that word, &nbsp;implies &nbsp;a wetland<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">that has been changed into a place for goldfish. &nbsp; The word swamp &nbsp;is &nbsp;better\u2026allows &nbsp;for<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">wild things that are not controlled by human hands.)<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">The muskrat stopped, &nbsp;looked at us, and then turned around and disappeared into the<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">mass of goldenrod that clothes &nbsp;much of our open &nbsp;swampland in summer.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"B81CBE4E-546B-4BEF-81B1-005FA5BBA110\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/DSC04267.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Why &nbsp;love a &nbsp;muskrat?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">A few years ago I wrote a &nbsp;book on our indigenous people. &nbsp;It was written with good &nbsp;intentions<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u2026to highlight their depth of culture and the wrongs that have been committed. &nbsp;The book was<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">a failure. &nbsp;Publisher went bankrupt the day &nbsp;the book &nbsp;came out. &nbsp;And, worse, I was accused<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">of appropriating indigenous voice. &nbsp; True. &nbsp;I had not considered there was a danger in my main<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">protagonist using first person voice. &nbsp;Writing exposes a writer to &nbsp;criticism. &nbsp;Painful always.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Which gets me back to the muskrat.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">In &nbsp;Mohawk legendary tradition the origin of our world is explored in a charming manner.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Elements of this legend are also found in other First Nations explanations of how<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">humans first appeared &nbsp;on earth. &nbsp; The Christian Adam and &nbsp;Eve explanation is most<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">common to Canadians. &nbsp;Would that the Mohawk explanation was equally familiar.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">The legend comes down through the generations in spoken form. Thus &nbsp;there<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">are changes since storytellers &nbsp;often like to make the story \u2018better&#8217;.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Yes, the muskrat will be featured. &nbsp;Don\u2019t get so anxious.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">This is my interpretation of the Mohawk legend of creation. &nbsp;The basic elements conform<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">to the tradition. &nbsp; We are not dealing with something absolute. &nbsp;Not Holy Writ you might say.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cIn the beginning, the planet was &nbsp;covered in water. &nbsp;There was no land\u2026no earth. All<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">water. &nbsp;Above the earth was an envelope of clouds where the gods lived. &nbsp;One day<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">there was an opening in &nbsp;these clouds and a &nbsp;woman we call &nbsp;Earth Mother peeked<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">through the hole. &nbsp;In order to get a better view, &nbsp;she leaned &nbsp;over too far and fell<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">through the hole. &nbsp;She was &nbsp;tumbling head &nbsp;over heals through the sky. &nbsp; A loon noticed<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">her and flew under her thereby cradling Earth Mother. &nbsp;But the loon could &nbsp;not hold her<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">forever. &nbsp;The loon called out to the creatures below, particularly to the big snapping<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">turtle. \u201cCan I let Earth Mother land on your back?\u201d &nbsp;The snapping turtle agreed and<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">before long Earth Mother found herself &nbsp;standing on the top of the great snapping turtle.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Even though the turtle was &nbsp;large it was not large enough to hold Earth Mother forever<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">so the big snapper called all the water creatures together saying \u201cwe need some mud<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">from the bottom below us. &nbsp;If &nbsp;we can get mud we can build a &nbsp;home for earth mother<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">on my back. &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cSo all the creatures &nbsp;tried to get some mud\u2026some earth. &nbsp;The beaver dove down<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">as deep as it could but never reached the bottom. &nbsp;Died trying. &nbsp;So the otter then<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">tried but also died trying. &nbsp;All &nbsp;the water creatures tried and failed. &nbsp;Then the big<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">snapping turtle turned &nbsp;to the little muskrat who had been ignored because it was<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">so &nbsp;small &nbsp;and insignificant. &nbsp;\u201cWill you try?\u201d &nbsp;The muskrat agreed and dove down<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">deep deep down. &nbsp;It was down a long time. &nbsp;Had &nbsp;it drowned &nbsp;like the others?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cThen the little muskrat come to the surface. &nbsp;Was ti dead or alive? &nbsp;We do &nbsp;not<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">know but there clutched in a little paw was &nbsp;a &nbsp;handful of mud &nbsp;from deep below<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the water. &nbsp;When that handfull of mud was &nbsp;spread on the great snapping turtles&#8217;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">back it suddenly began to expand &nbsp;and expand\u2026got larger and larger until the land<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">we know of as our earth was &nbsp;created.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cAll this happened because of the lowly little muskrat had an ability to live underwater\u2019<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">for a long time. &nbsp;Without the muskrat none of us would be here.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">NOTE: &nbsp;Legends &nbsp;of human origin are common to most cultures. &nbsp;But the First Nation<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">legends, particularly this one have some striking features. &nbsp;The snapping turtle\u2019s<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">back, for instance, &nbsp;fits the modern scientific of plate tectonics. &nbsp;The crust of the<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">earth is broken into huge plates that float snd clash. Below is a sea &nbsp;of molten magma.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">To me, the Mohawk creation legend has &nbsp;another feature. &nbsp;All the &nbsp;creatures of<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the world &nbsp;helped Earth Mother survive. &nbsp;Among the Mohawk the great Snapping<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Turtle is given much &nbsp;credit\u2026but most credit goes to the tiny Muskrat. There<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">is a recognition that all the creatures have value.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">There are other features to this legend which I will not explore because my<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">story is &nbsp;about the muskrat but it is worth mentioning that Earth Mother was<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">pregnant when she fell. &nbsp;She &nbsp;bore two sons. &nbsp;One was a good son, the other<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">was &nbsp;a bad son. They fought.
