\n<\/span>\u201cAct like an adult for once \u00a0in your life.\u201d
\n<\/span>So that is when \u00a0the great idea came to mind\u2026like \u00a0a flash of \u00a0lightning.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n<\/span>\u201cI\u2019m stacking the lumber neatly in the laneway\u2026can\u2019t resist grabbing the stuff\u2026good wood.\u201d
\n<\/span>\u201cWhere do you get it?\u201d
\n\u201cSir Casimir Gzowki park\u2026lumber pilesup there in a jumble like \u00a0pick up sticks all winter\u201d

Note: This \u00a0was my idea \u00a0of a barn frame. \u00a0The kind Alex Skeoch built back in the 1890\u2019s. \u00a0Mine would have to be a little more modest as my lumber supply was limited to the boards floating down the Humber River and \u00a0washing up on Sunnyside \u00a0Beach in the \u00a0winter of 1968. \u00a0I was convinced that barn building was \u00a0part of my genetic \u00a0makeup.<\/div>\n

How \u00a0does one fool build \u00a0a barn. \u00a0With care? \u00a0Note the long rope to hold the beams near to vertical. \u00a0But not quite vertical unfortunately.\u00a0 As a \u00a0barn builder I felt I was gifted. \u00a0Certainly agile. \u00a0Note there is no ladder and the beam \u00a0is \u00a0aslant \u00a0In my defence it was \u00a0very difficult to keep the upright beams straight while pounding in the angle braces. Alex Skeoch, the builder of the Cruickshank barn at Corunna, had the help of \u00a0100 men and \u00a0as many women. \u00a0I was alone most of the time. \u00a0Got advice from Marjorie and Dad occasionally. \u00a0\u201cYou are going to kill yourself, damn \u00a0fool.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cAlan, we \u00a0have a child coming and you are risking your life.\u201d \u201cAre those nails long enough?\u201d \u00a0\u201cAlan, those nails are bent\u2026don\u2019t tell me<\/div>\n

And so the \u00a0new barn began to rise from the ashes \u00a0of the old Freeman \u00a0barn. \u00a0As planks \u00a0arrived they were cut and hammered \u00a0to posts, then plywood pieces were nailed \u00a0to roof trusts\u2026all cut to length with a \u00a0skill saw. \u00a0Being a \u00a0lone \u00a0builder was \u00a0not as easy \u00a0as it seemed. Dad came along occasionally to add \u00a0his \u00a0comments which usually started with \u201cYou \u00a0are a \u00a0goddamned \u00a0fool!\u2019\u00a0 And \u00a0then he did his part to help pulling spikes out of the battered \u00a0planks and muttering choice phrases\u00a0while huffing and \u00a0puffing on a White Owl Invincible.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n

We had the \u00a0family farm but the barn had been lost decades ago. \u00a0Now a farm without at barn is like horse with out harness or a cow without an udder or a swamp \u00a0without frogs or a sky without clouds \u00a0or a house without a stove\u2026Get the point. \u00a0You can probably add a host of other examples. \u00a0Do so, by all means.<\/p>\n

This is (was) my barn. \u00a0You will note the lone surviving piece \u00a0of Granddad Freeman\u2019s barn was the stone stable wall at the front. \u00a0All \u00a0the other structures I built myself. \u00a0 I \u00a0did not have enough of the rescued green asphalt roofing so had to dip in our savings for a few squares of \u00a0brown \u00a0shingles which were on sale.. NOTE the farm field. Try to pretend \u00a0you do \u00a0not see \u00a0the weeds. \u00a0Look at the spring toothed cultivators and the big drag plow. Not seen is the International Formal A\u00a0tractor.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

These \u00a0were \u00a0glorious days. \u00a0Then everything went wrong. \u00a0First was the tractor. \u00a0No anti-freeze in the radiator. \u00a0First freeze-up\u00a0 split the engine block converting\u00a0a \u00a0great machine \u00a0into a \u00a0pile of scrap iron. \u00a0Whose fault? \u00a0Mine, I suppose.<\/span><\/div>\n

The barn would be a perfect place to keep all the rather neglected farm machines \u00a0I had \u00a0been collecting. \u00a0Much to the humour of the real farmers \u00a0on\u00a0the Fifth Line. \u00a0And \u00a0to Dad, trapped above on an old \u00a0horse drawn corn cultivator that made a lot of \u00a0noise when pulled through the weeds \u00a0but<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n
did little that was \u00a0positive. \u00a0Dad \u00a0loved fooling around and \u00a0cursing me \u00a0for a damn fool. \u00a0But he was \u00a0around \u00a0a lot that summer. \u00a0I think He liked\u00a0the barn building idea. \u00a0Or just cursing was therapeutic making up \u00a0for bad days \u00a0at the racetracks of Southern Ontario.<\/span><\/div>\n

And \u00a0there is \u00a0was. \u00a0Like the House that Jack Built in the kid\u2019s story. \u00a0All asked\u2026worse \u00a0than flattened.\u00a0 The barn that took months to build using every free scrap of lumber thrown into the Humber River bye vandals or construction crews. \u00a0Once more a helter-skelter pile. All that beautiful wood was now splayed \u00a0out like a frog on a dissection board. \u00a0I think my love affair with metaphors\u00a0goes beyond common sense.<\/span><\/div>\n

Dad got as much kick out of the demolition of \u00a0the barn as he \u00a0did the construction. \u00a0He grinned a lot and \u00a0let fly with his compliments such as \u2018goddamned fool\u2019, \u201cyou don\u2019t know what the \u00a0hell you are \u00a0doing.\u201d \u201clet\u2019s set the whole thing on fire and \u00a0be \u00a0done with it.\u201d \u00a0\u201chere give me that crowbar, you don\u2019t know your ass from your elbow.\u201d etc. Etc. \u00a0In short, we \u00a0had a good time both \u00a0building and demolishing the barn.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n

And so we \u00a0went home to Toronto. \u00a0The fire had died down \u00a0somewhat. \u00a0 \u00a0BUT NOT ENOUGH.<\/div>\n

\u201cAlan, that was Art Saunders. \u00a0The fire has spread \u00a0 beyond \u00a0the barn. \u00a0The<\/div>\n
back field is burning. \u00a0Ron has done \u00a0what he \u00a0could but you better get up to the farm now.\u201d<\/div>\n

And so I did. \u00a0The backfield was \u00a0blackened and \u00a0a \u00a0few red pines had become<\/div>\n
skeletons but the fire was out.<\/div>\n

I had to face a bitter truth.<\/div>\n
Barn building is \u00a0really not part of my genetic makeup.<\/div>\n

THE \u00a0SKEOCH \u00a0BARN NEAR FERGUS<\/div>\n

We did build barns. Really Alexander Skeoch did. \u00a0Or is that a Legend \u00a0passed \u00a0down from generation to generation. \u00a0That was a long time ago. Precious little \u00a0evidence remains. \u00a0 \u00a0Even our huge \u00a0cattle barn on grandfather James Skeoch\u2019s farm is \u00a0gone. \u00a0Not by fire. \u00a0it was taken apart carefully by Mennonite \u00a0farmers then stored as \u00a0a potential wedding gift for a new young couple \u00a0or a replacement barn should a fellow church member lose his farm to fire. \u00a0 This barn stood for nearly 100 years. \u00a0Now it is resting somewhere cosy. \u00a0Waiting for its resurrection.<\/div>\n

P.S. \u00a0JUST a \u00a0little post script. \u00a0I decided to check the driftwood lumber on Sunnyside Beach \u00a0today\u2026January 25, 2018\u2026more than half a<\/div>\n
century after my plank collecting back \u00a0in 1968. \u00a0Guess \u00a0what? \u00a0No lumber. Only a few red bricks from some \u00a0demolition long ago. \u00a0Why tell you this?<\/div>\n
Simple \u00a0answer. \u00a0If you decide to build \u00a0a barn like I did, you will have to find another beach.<\/div>\n
