Why is it bolted to the floor beam?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>NOT MANY PEOPLE WOULD KNOW THE<\/p>\n<div class=\"\">IMPORTANCE OF THIS &nbsp;PULLEY?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"CE69D2B7-D94E-4950-BDAF-E3DAAD6BCEDE\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/A1riMDl4QCSSoZRpxqkPXg_thumb_9a628.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">alan skeoch<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">nov. 2019<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"B32792C6-A088-47C6-965D-FC21EBBE3569\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_9a5e2.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">This pulley seems to have been accidently thrown aside in the Gordon Ball barn .<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">It is resting on the floor after all. &nbsp; I bet that not more than 1in 100 would know<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">its use. &nbsp;Maybe 1 in 1,000.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Lucky for me. &nbsp;Iong long ago around 1950, my Uncle Frank Freeman used &nbsp;a &nbsp;pulley just<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">like this to get hay into the hay loft of his barn on the Fifth line of Erin Township.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">He did &nbsp;not have s bailer so hay for winter feed was forked on his hay wagon and once<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">filled the team of horses hauled the load into the threshing floor of the barn. &nbsp;Then<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the horses were unhitched &nbsp;and led out of the barn and attached to piece of rope\u2026a &nbsp;long<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">heavy rope. &nbsp;I think there were two such pulleys and two ropes\u2026one on each side<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">of the barn entrance. &nbsp;(That\u2019s why farm sales always seem to have long lengths &nbsp;of<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">perfectly coiled rope on hand.)<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cOK, Daisy..Dick\u2026move out\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">And they would walk down the barn hill pulling the rope taut. &nbsp;The rope was<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">attached to the rack lifter in the second picture below. Need a right angled<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">turn to get the rope up to the rack lifter. &nbsp;Attached VIA this&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">pulley which was hooked by a couple of right angled bends to the loaded<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">hay wagon. &nbsp;Presto! &nbsp;the load of hay was elevated and then forked off by<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">hand into the hay mow. &nbsp; Once emptied the reverse happened and the<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">empty hay wagon was lowered back onto the wagon wheels &nbsp;and axles \u2026then<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the horses were brought back to the hay &nbsp;wagon and backed the wagon<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">out of the barn&#8230;ready<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">for the next load.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Labour intensive. &nbsp;You bet! &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Accidents? &nbsp;Likely\u2026if the hay rack &nbsp;got loose\u2026or horses bolted from ground &nbsp;wasp nest&#8230;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">I have not seen this pulley in many barns. &nbsp;None except this one. &nbsp;if you look closely<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">you might even see the hand drill the drilled the hole for the bolt holding the pulley in place.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">My memory may have missed a &nbsp;step. &nbsp;Correct me if you can<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">alan<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Haying needed a good team of horses that understood &nbsp;English. &nbsp;The horses bonded<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">with my uncle Frank. &nbsp;He loved them. &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cHorses are better than tractors.\u201d &nbsp;he &nbsp;said to me back then<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cBecause horses needed to rest\u2026have s drink of water or just get their wind back.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cWhat is so good about that?\u201d &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cThink about it. &nbsp;If the horse needs a rest then I get s rest too. &nbsp;Tractors never stop.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"1BBE6E55-ADE1-4945-BA36-7D7F279CBEAB\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_9a5d1.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NOT MANY PEOPLE WOULD KNOW THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS &nbsp;PULLEY? alan skeoch nov. 2019 This pulley seems to have been accidently thrown aside in the Gordon Ball barn .
