Finally<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font face=\"Georgia\" class=\"\">it was ready.&nbsp;<\/font><span class=\"\">&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"\">It took 340 rail cars and 260 trucks to ship all of the components.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\">&nbsp;&nbsp;By 1966 the&nbsp;<\/span><font face=\"Noto Sans Regular\" class=\"\">world\u2019s largest drag line&nbsp;earthmoving&nbsp;drag line machine&nbsp;was ready to&nbsp;drag<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font face=\"Noto Sans Regular\" class=\"\">the tops Off&nbsp;the Hills that were The&nbsp;stubs of&nbsp;mountains<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font face=\"Noto Sans Regular\" class=\"\">worn down long ago. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font face=\"Noto Sans Regular\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font face=\"Noto Sans Regular\" class=\"\">The big Muskie had an immense bucket\u2026so large that two Greyhound Buses could be parked inside<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font face=\"Noto Sans Regular\" class=\"\">with lots of room left over. &nbsp;(The Bucket is all that remains of the Big&nbsp;Muskie today)<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font face=\"Noto Sans Regular\" class=\"\">The Big Muskie was 240 feet high\u2026as high&nbsp;as an<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font face=\"Noto Sans Regular\" class=\"\">11 story sky scraper. &nbsp; It could move slowly\u2026an inch at a time. &nbsp;Once in place it began pulling the tops<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font face=\"Noto Sans Regular\" class=\"\">of &nbsp;those ancient &nbsp;mountains. &nbsp;Ripping The Carolinian forest to&nbsp;rubble\u2026shag bark hickory<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font face=\"Noto Sans Regular\" class=\"\">&nbsp;walnut, Osage Orange\u2026turning 10,000 acres into a moonscape. &nbsp; Not pretty. &nbsp;Ugly and&nbsp;dangerous.&nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font face=\"Noto Sans Regular\" class=\"\">The Big Muskie was&nbsp;powered by huge&nbsp;electric motors that were so&nbsp;expensive to run that the five man crew did much of the<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font face=\"Noto Sans Regular\" class=\"\">work at&nbsp;night when electric rates were cheapest.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font face=\"Noto Sans Regular\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font face=\"Noto Sans Regular\" class=\"\">When we first saw the&nbsp;Big Muskie, we marvelled\u2026as did the local population. &nbsp;However opinions changed even&nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font face=\"Noto Sans Regular\" class=\"\">though the coal company reclaimed the land&nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\">after the Muskie had chewed it up.<\/span><span class=\"\">&nbsp; 9,000 acres have been reclaimed.&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font face=\"Noto Sans Regular\" class=\"\">From the creation of the big Muskie in 1960 to its&nbsp;demolition in 1999 there was both wonder and anger.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font face=\"Noto Sans Regular\" class=\"\">Efforts to save the&nbsp;huge machine as a museum failed and it was cut up as scrap in 1999. &nbsp;Only the<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font face=\"Noto Sans Regular\" class=\"\">great&nbsp;bucket remains. &nbsp;The Central Ohio Coal Company owned 110,000 acres. &nbsp; Coal companies around the<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font face=\"Noto Sans Regular\" class=\"\">world held many&nbsp;thousands of acres of both Lignite (brown coal) and Anthracite (hard coal). &nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\">&nbsp; Where does coal originate? &nbsp;How much remains.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font face=\"Noto Sans Regular\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font face=\"Noto Sans Regular\" class=\"\">Most coal reserves&nbsp;were created in the Carboniferous period when the earth was warm and&nbsp;covered with plants<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font face=\"Noto Sans Regular\" class=\"\">that lived&nbsp;and died in abundance. &nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font face=\"Noto Sans Regular\" class=\"\">That was some 260 million years ago (round numbers) Some of this dead vegetation got covered with overburden (limestone, clay, etc.. Both pressure and heat<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font face=\"Noto Sans Regular\" class=\"\">turned it to coal. &nbsp;Brown&nbsp;coal experienced less heat&nbsp;end less pressure than hard coal. &nbsp;Brown coal is closer to&nbsp;the surface. &nbsp;burns dirty.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font face=\"Noto Sans Regular\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font face=\"Noto Sans Regular\" class=\"\">Will we run out of these resources because they are finite? &nbsp;Perhaps. But the coal reserves took 60 million years to form and<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font face=\"Noto Sans Regular\" class=\"\">200 million years it lay there, &nbsp;undisturbed. &nbsp;Great swaths of time. &nbsp;Inconceivable. We are recent arrivals that<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font face=\"Noto Sans Regular\" class=\"\">&nbsp;have only been consuming&nbsp;coal for a few thousand years. Coal will be&nbsp;around when many generations of us will be&nbsp;dead and gone.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font face=\"Noto Sans Regular\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font face=\"Noto Sans Regular\" class=\"\">The Big Muskie had a short life from the engineering&nbsp;idea 1960 to being cut up into scrap steel in 1999. &nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font face=\"Noto Sans Regular\" class=\"\">We were there in 1970\u2019s when visitors were divided into lovers and haters.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font face=\"Noto Sans Regular\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"viewer-media max-w-[50%] max-h-full basis-7\/12 object-contain min-w-0\" id=\"E46C20D7-B5FC-4C1F-9B9F-4C5263C79633\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Best-the-wilds-ohio.png\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font face=\"Noto Sans Regular\" class=\"\">COAL MINING\u2019S LEGACY:<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font face=\"Noto Sans Regular\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" class=\"\">Much of the land disturbed by surface mining for coal prior to 1948 was not reclaimed after mining. While most of Ohio\u2019s surface mining took place after enactment of the state\u2019s first surface mining law in 1948, reclamation requirements were not adequate by today\u2019s standard. Prior to 1972, Ohio\u2019s statutes did not require restoration of desirable environmental conditions to the surface mined areas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" class=\"\">As a result, the state was left with nearly 450,000 acres of land that were surface mined for coal prior to Ohio\u2019s stringent 1972 reclamation law and 6,000 underground coal mines that exist below 600,000 acres of land.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" class=\"\">By 1972 the problems included:<\/p>\n<ul dir=\"ltr\" class=\"\">\n<li style=\"line-height: 1.8\" class=\"\">1,300 miles of streams polluted by acid mine drainage<\/li>\n<li style=\"line-height: 1.8\" class=\"\">500 miles of streams affected by sediment deposition<\/li>\n<li style=\"line-height: 1.8\" class=\"\">Nearly 119,000 acres of land in need of major reclamation efforts<\/li>\n<li style=\"line-height: 1.8\" class=\"\">Hundreds of acres of land prone to deep mine subsidence<\/li>\n<li style=\"line-height: 1.8\" class=\"\">Polluted domestic water supplies<\/li>\n<li style=\"line-height: 1.8\" class=\"\">Hundreds of acres of landslides, among other problems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-left: 0px\" class=\"\" id=\"yui_3_5_1_1_1767721165944_622\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/OIP-11.jpeg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-left: 0px\" class=\"\" id=\"yui_3_5_1_1_1767721165944_650\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/OIP-12.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-left: 0px\" class=\"\" id=\"yui_3_5_1_1_1767721138835_722\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/OIP-14.jpeg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font color=\"#4a4a4a\" face=\"Source Sans Pro, Tahoma, Verdana, Segoe, sans-serif\" class=\"\"><span class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font color=\"#4a4a4a\" face=\"Source Sans Pro, Tahoma, Verdana, Segoe, sans-serif\" class=\"\">I felt very negative about The Big Muskie before meeting the great machine. &nbsp;Why? In terms of absolute time, the Carboniferous Period began approximately 358.9 million years ago and ended 298.9 million years ago. Its duration of approximately 60 million years makes it the longest period of the&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/Paleozoic-Era\" class=\"md-crosslink\" data-show-preview=\"true\" style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px;border: 0px solid;color: var(--link-color)\">Paleozoic Era<\/a><span class=\"\">&nbsp;and the second longest period of the&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/Phanerozoic-Eon\" class=\"md-crosslink\" data-show-preview=\"true\" style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px;border: 0px solid;color: var(--link-color)\">Phanerozoic Eon<\/a><span class=\"\">. The rocks that were formed or deposited during the period&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"md-dictionary-link mw md-dictionary-tt-off\" data-term=\"constitute\" href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/constitute\" data-type=\"MW\" style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px;border-width: 0px 0px;border-bottom: 2px dotted var(--blue);border-style: solid;border-color: currentcolor;color: var(--link-color)\">constitute<\/a><span class=\"\">&nbsp;the Carboniferous System. It also allowed the coal company to better carryout their reclamation plans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The machine was so large it was necessary to ship the components to the coal mining customer in Ohio and erect the machine on site. Sulfur-bearing materials exposed to air and water during mining react with oxygen and water to form dilute solutions of sulfuric acid which may also contain a number of other dissolved minerals. This contaminated water, referred to as acid mine drainage (AMD), often seeps from underground mines and sometimes from surface mined areas. AMD is a significant environmental problem associated with abandoned mined lands and is often very difficult to control. When many older underground mines were abandoned, the entries into them were not adequately sealed. Unstable or open portals and shafts on the ground surface can be very hazardous. Dangers within the mines include poisonous or explosive gases, oxygen deficiencies, flooded sections, unstable roofs, hard-to-see vertical shafts, venomous insects and snakes, and disorienting mazes of mine workings. These problems are compounded by total darkness within underground mines.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\">Abandoned mines are nothing like naturally formed caves, which are attractive to recreational and professional explorers. Abandoned mines&nbsp;should never be mistaken for caves!&nbsp;Old mines and shafts conceal a multitude of potentially lethal hazards. Each year, a number of people are killed or injured nationally in abandoned mines. The Cadiz CIC project, located in Harrison County, was an AML Economic Revitalization (AMLER) project that supported local investment and rehabilitation efforts within a historical coal town.
