charset=utf-8\" class=\"\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"word-wrap: break-word; -webkit-nbsp-mode: space; line-break: after-white-space;\" class=\"\">EPISODE 177 &nbsp; &nbsp;THE MCCORMICK REAPER PROJECT<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div>DATELINE: AUGJUST 9, 2024<\/div>\n<div>I received a phone call today from&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div>Dale Maris, a relative of Percy Lloyd which brought back memories.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<p>Percy Lloyd purchased this repolica McCormick Reapeer and housed it in his small museum near Merlin, Ontario.<\/p><\/div>\n<div>Somehow executive of the &nbsp;Mellon Bank was made aware of Percy and decided try and get this replica reaper&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div>to the folk museum of Northern Ireland where Cyrus McCormick was born.<\/div>\n<div>At the time I was writing thesis on 19th century technology and visiting the Dearborn Museum often.<\/div>\n<div>I wrote but cannot find a story about Percy and remember asking him wha he would do with the money<\/div>\n<div>received when he sold he reaper. \u201cThat money will pa my funeral expenses\u2026I will not be a burden to my<\/div>\n<div>family.\u201d &nbsp; Technology changes. &nbsp;And change continues<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">to happen. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">THE CYRUS MCCORMICK REAPER PROJECT<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cAlan, aren\u2019t you getting yourself into this project a little too deeply? &nbsp;What do &nbsp;you know about repairing\u2026rebuilding\u2026.historic<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">machines?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cTrue. &nbsp;But I just could &nbsp;not let the opportunity slip by.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cBut you are dealing with big shots\u2026an executive with the Mellon Bank of New &nbsp;York. &nbsp;Why didn\u2019t you<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">tell him you were a &nbsp;high school teacher\u2026a teacher of history?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cI guess &nbsp;I found it easier to say &nbsp;yes than to say no.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cCould be a deep hole you are stepping into.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cI know\u2026makes me a bit nervous.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cHow did &nbsp;they get your name?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cI think Peter Cousins at the Dearborn Museum \u2026 near Detroit \u2026must<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">have passed my name along. &nbsp;I had been doing all that research on machine<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">technology much of which was centred on the collection of &nbsp;Henry Ford.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cWhat are &nbsp;you going to do now?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cWell, first thing is to get the machine and bring it here.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cWhere will you put it\u201d &nbsp;Sounds &nbsp;like a big machine.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cI\u2019m emptying the garage\u2026.the McCormick Reaper is about&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the size of &nbsp;a car.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cYou have already &nbsp;converted part of the garage and the attached<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">old mink house into a chicken coop. &nbsp;Where will the chickens go?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cNowhere. &nbsp;They will keep the Reaper company\u2026lots &nbsp;of room.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cAlan, &nbsp;our home is not a farm.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cLucky we have this huge lot\u2026lucky we live on the old Mississauga<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">reserve with non conforming property lines\u2026lots of room.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cis this legal?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cPerish &nbsp;the thought.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cNext step?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cTo get the reaper and bring it here.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cHow?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cGary Duncan has &nbsp;offered to help. His &nbsp;brother runs &nbsp;a truck rental agency<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">and has offered a &nbsp;five ton truck for Saturday. &nbsp; Gary and i will drive down<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">to Merlin.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&#8220;Merlin?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cSmall farm outside Merlin where the current owner of the reaper keeps his<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">collection of things.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp;&nbsp;(Note: Forgot his &nbsp;name at the moment but remember him so well)<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cHow will you load the reaper?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cEasy\u2026the five ton has an &nbsp;hydraulic &nbsp;ramp\u2026piece of cake.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"B3ACFF2A-44A3-4D65-A177-FD34BF816E3B\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_20b2c.jpeg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">WHEN the rental truck failed on Highway 401 , we tuned to our Ford Van and a &nbsp;little trailer as &nbsp;an alternative. &nbsp;Here is a picture with<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">a &nbsp;different load &nbsp;and &nbsp;one of ours sons, Kevin, tightening up &nbsp;the straps. &nbsp; The McCormick Reaper was loaded successfully&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Unfortunately the \u2018Piece of cake\u201d was not that easy. &nbsp;The five ton truck<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">broke down on the 401 before we really got out of Toronto.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">My van would have to be the back as &nbsp;Gary and I<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">headed for Merlin, a small town south west of Chatham. &nbsp;East of<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Windsor\u2026east of Detroit. &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"99FB5008-AF2C-47D6-AD34-346F0A7D1D6A\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_20cc7.jpeg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">The cutter blades were designed &nbsp;differently from the BellReaper\u2026more like a saw than garden shears.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cHow can you carry the reaper in your truck?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cWe\u2019ll put it in the trailer.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cI thought the &nbsp;trailer was broken. &nbsp;Didn\u2019t it come loose and<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">end up in a swamp near Fergus\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cThat was months ago. &nbsp;Got it fixed.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cWill the reaper fit onto a two wheeled homemade trailer?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cHope so.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Gary &nbsp;and I managed to get to Merlin without trouble. &nbsp;The retired&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">farmer (whose name I must find again) met us at his small two<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">storey drive shed where he kept the reaper. &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cLet me help get the reaper onto the trailer\u2026two long planks should do it.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cReally only need &nbsp;one plank\u2026the McCormick Reaper has only one bull wheel.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cBetween the three of &nbsp;us we can get her on\u2026winch attached &nbsp;to the truck<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">and one of us on each side &nbsp;so it does not tip. \u201c<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cMoving up &nbsp;a foot at a time. &nbsp;There. &nbsp;Done. Now we\u2019ll lash<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">it down\u2026\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">I remember clearly speaking with the owner of the reaper but cannot<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">be sure &nbsp;how he got the machine. I think he said that the reaper had<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">been on display for &nbsp;a time and then put into some kind of &nbsp;storage shed<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">where it sat for decades. &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">One &nbsp;thought kept bothering me. &nbsp;\u201cHow could such a delicate machine<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">have survived for such a long time? &nbsp; No apparent invasion from powder<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">post beetle. &nbsp; Almost intact.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">I found &nbsp;out later that the reaper we strapped down on my trailer was not the<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">reaper everyone thought it was. &nbsp;It had &nbsp;not been built in 1831 by<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Cyrus McCormick. &nbsp; This &nbsp;machine had &nbsp;been built a hundred years later in 1931 to celebrate<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the McCormick invention. &nbsp;A replica. &nbsp;One hundred scale models had been built<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">by the International harvester Corporation to celebrate the original inventor.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">That knowledge was a bit of a relief. &nbsp;I would &nbsp;not be fooling around with<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">a machine that was &nbsp;really historic. &nbsp;There might be a few others around<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">somewhere &nbsp;even though there was &nbsp;no evidence of such. &nbsp;If this had &nbsp;been<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the original McCormick machine it should have gone directly &nbsp;to the Smithsonain<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">in Washington. &nbsp; &nbsp;One McCormick replica did exist in the Dearborn collection. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">But perhaps the Dearborn Museum McCormick reaper was ancient. &nbsp; Now<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">safely on display. &nbsp;Protected. &nbsp;In no danger.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">In &nbsp;short, I was more relieved that mine was a replica. &nbsp;More pleased than disappointed. &nbsp;I would not be restoring<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the Mona Lisa.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cSo what are you going to do with the money?\u201d, I asked gently<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cIt will pay for my funeral.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cI beg your pardon,\u201d &nbsp;I really was not sure I heard him correctly.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cWhen I die, this money will bury me\u2026cover any funeral expenses.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">I won\u2019t be a burden on my family that way.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">There was not much more &nbsp;we could say. &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">With that touching comment, Gary and I revved up my Ford van &nbsp;and<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">began our careful return to Mississauga. &nbsp; It was a long day but we got<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the reaper home and rolled &nbsp;it into the garage (chicken coop) for the&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">restoration to begin.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">All the immediately visible parts &nbsp;were evident but in the back of may mind<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">I wondered why we could roll it so easily. &nbsp; Must be an &nbsp;idling pulley or some arrangement<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">that kept it out of gear for moving around. &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">The next discovery really knocked &nbsp;me &nbsp;for a &nbsp;loop.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"265121BE-7DC7-4B1F-AFEC-EBC168DEE8A3\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/PastedGraphic-1.tiff\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">In this picture you can see the big but gear clearly\u2026bevelled, sprocketed.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cWhere is the bull gear?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cBull gear?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cThe main gear\u2026the sprocketed bevelled &nbsp;gear that converts the forward motion of the horse&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">into power that drives the cutter bar. &nbsp;\u201c<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">That discovery was &nbsp;made when we got the reaper to Mississauga. &nbsp;There was \u2018no joy in mudville\u2019 that day.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Sure &nbsp;enough the large cast iron bull gear was missing. &nbsp;Any other missing part might &nbsp;be replaced. &nbsp;The<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">absent bull gear was a devastating discovery. &nbsp;If I was &nbsp;a real mechanic I would have noticed. &nbsp;What could<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">i do? As things &nbsp;turned out the factory owner<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">was quite willing to make me a &nbsp;new gear. &nbsp;No small task. &nbsp; I expected it would cost<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">a fortune.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cHow much will that cost?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cNothing\u2026do it as a favour for you guys on the other side of the border. \u201c<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cNo, I will &nbsp;pay.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cNope, won\u2019t let you\u2026call it a neighbourly act \u2026 done for that old grouch &nbsp;Cyrus McCormick<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">who has been dead &nbsp;for years.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">A couple weeks later the new &nbsp;gear was made and somehow &nbsp;I managed to get the<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">gear from Detroit to Mississauga without a problem. &nbsp;Sam Markou, a good friend, was<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">in our truck when I brought the gear across the border. &nbsp;We were sent to a special<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">holding area where I explained &nbsp;the project to Canadian border guards. &nbsp;They cleared<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the import. &nbsp;Not sure they cared much about it. &nbsp;This new bull gear was small &nbsp;potatoes in<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the great scheme of things. &nbsp;A blip.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">I worked all that fall improving &nbsp;the reaper. &nbsp;Some wood parts had to be refashioned. &nbsp;A whole<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">new reel windlass for instance. &nbsp;Easy work though even for a left handed historian.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Word got out to the local &nbsp;paper and &nbsp;a feature story was &nbsp;written. &nbsp;Friends came by often<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Even our boys, then quite small, showed &nbsp;an interest. &nbsp;
