THE ROBBERY <\/div>\n
\u201cNever be hostage to fortune, Alan.”  said Evan Cruikshank  a few days after the robbery. <\/div>\n
Little consolation  initially.  The theif was bold as brass.  He (or she) took it easy \u2026even<\/div>\n
took time sort the dishes only taking the best. Same applied to the furniture.  Onlythe best was<\/div>\n
taken.  Most embsrassng to me was the fact he (or she) backed my trailer top to the<\/div>\n
front door of the farm to make the loading easier.<\/div>\n

That happened decades ago.   Today I found an old newspaper clipping written after the robbery<\/div>\n
titled LETTER TO A THIEF.   Maybe he would feel a bit guilty.<\/div>\n
Fat chance of that.  Fat  chance of guilt that is.   The thief did respond though sending a letter <\/div>\n
telling me to shut up or he (or she) would set the house on fire.  Now that scared me.<\/div>\n
I shut up.   Kept my funny remarks to myself.<\/div>\n

FUNNY REMARK<\/div>\n

The thief stole the big round dining room table\u2026huge thing made of  oak,\u2026 expandable, fine<\/div>\n
carpentry.  I thought the thief would want the history of the table to help him sell it  (must have been a<\/div>\n
man or a  big woman  or both)  <\/div>\n

TEETH MARKS<\/div>\n

\u201cYou may have noticed the deep scratch marks in the table.  They are not  scratches.  <\/div>\n
Those marks were made by Andrew\u2019s teeth on his birthday party.   Marjorie had stuffed his<\/div>\n
cake with wrapped coins\u2026nickles, dimes and quarters.  Unfortunately Andrew got a piece <\/div>\n
with notihng in it.   So he threw a tantrum and bit the table.  The teeth marks are there.<\/div>\n
A kind of provenance as the art dealers say<\/div>\n

SILVER LINING<\/div>\n

Remember how  this story opened.  i.e. \u201cNever be hostage to fortune\u201d In short \u201cNever<\/div>\n
let things  own you.\u201d  A sure recipe for unhappiness.<\/div>\n
Well we had a choice after the robbery.  Sell the farm or restore the farm.<\/div>\n
We chose to gut the old farmhouse of 1870\u2019s vintage.   The thief had already<\/div>\n
done part of the work.  <\/div>\n

Would I shake hands with the thief?  Maybe I had already done that and<\/div>\n
did not know it.<\/div>\n
