(Department of Defense)\" typeof=\"foaf:Image\" pinger-seen=\"true\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"58451CC3-E496-45CD-B602-84CC1C6C6D8B\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/mil-agent-orange-destruction-1200.jpg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Thousands of leaky drums of Agent Orange were stored on johnston island<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"img\" apple-inline=\"yes\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Agent-Orange-inventory-Johnston-Island-1976-note-the-continued-deterioration-of-the.png\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Johnston Island is so tiny that it is almost invisible, &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">few people are aware of the existence of the island. &nbsp;Visitors are forbidden by the United&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">States Air Force who has bulldosed coral from the lagoon to make an airstrip and a dock for freighters.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Most days the base is inactive,<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">But in the 1970\u2019s Johnston Island was very busy receiving thousands of 45 gallon drums of a defoliant<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">called &nbsp;Agent Orange. a Million of gallons shipped from USAF bases such as Da Nang in Vietnam..42,000 gallons &nbsp; &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">from USA<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">some of the drums leaked chemical into ground water in Laos and Vietnam. &nbsp; &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">The results? &nbsp;birth defects and &nbsp;cancers even now 50 years after the war..&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">600,000 gallons of Agent Orange were sprayed on the jungle of Laos in an&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">attempt to expose the Ho Chi Minh Trail which delivered supplies and &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp;soldiers to the battlefronts.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"5C798FAE-BC0D-4B4A-96A3-74CE10517DD0\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/1962_orange.jpg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"eager\" alt=\"\" title=\"A river bank defoliation from the Admiral Elmo R. The &nbsp;closest defoliant took a month to kill jungle plants\u2026Agent Orange was immediate.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">The long term effects.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cBy the end of the war great swaths of jungle had been defoliated and villages saturated.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cHowmuch Agent Orange remained?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cmillions of gallons were stored in USAF air bases like Da Nang.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cSo Johnston Island was chosen as a storage site. \u201c<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cOut of sight out of mind\u2026.is it still there?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cNo. &nbsp;Special incinerator ships destroyed what could be incinerated. &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">some remains in the ground wherever&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Agent Orange was stored &#8220;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp;&nbsp;
