Thousands of leaky drums of Agent Orange were stored on johnston island<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
Johnston Island is so tiny that it is almost invisible,  <\/div>\n
few people are aware of the existence of the island.  Visitors are forbidden by the United <\/div>\n
States Air Force who has bulldosed coral from the lagoon to make an airstrip and a dock for freighters.<\/div>\n
Most days the base is inactive,<\/div>\n

But in the 1970\u2019s Johnston Island was very busy receiving thousands of 45 gallon drums of a defoliant<\/div>\n
called  Agent Orange. a Million of gallons shipped from USAF bases such as Da Nang in Vietnam..42,000 gallons    <\/div>\n
from USA<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
some of the drums leaked chemical into ground water in Laos and Vietnam.    <\/div>\n
The results?  birth defects and  cancers even now 50 years after the war.. <\/div>\n
600,000 gallons of Agent Orange were sprayed on the jungle of Laos in an <\/div>\n
attempt to expose the Ho Chi Minh Trail which delivered supplies and  <\/div>\n
 soldiers to the battlefronts.<\/div>\n

\u201c Chemical companies like Dow, Monsanto and many others were contracted<\/div>\n
to make a more  lethal defoliant from common herbicides used by gardeners.\u2019The<\/div>\n
result was Agent Orange.\u2019<\/div>\n
\u2018If it made people sick why not find a less lethal defoliant\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cThe danger was not known immediately and the chemical was terrific defoliant.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cHow terrific?\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cPlants sprayed with Agent Orange died immediately.\u201d<\/div>\n
No one knew the long  term effects \u2026 <\/div>\n
agent Orange could live 100 years in soil and 14 years in the human body.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201dNo alternative?\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cNone,   The  closest defoliant took a month to kill jungle plants\u2026Agent Orange was immediate.<\/div>\n
The long term effects.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cBy the end of the war great swaths of jungle had been defoliated and villages saturated.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cHowmuch Agent Orange remained?\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cmillions of gallons were stored in USAF air bases like Da Nang.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cSo Johnston Island was chosen as a storage site. \u201c<\/div>\n
\u201cOut of sight out of mind\u2026.is it still there?<\/div>\n
\u201cNo.  Special incinerator ships destroyed what could be incinerated.  <\/div>\n
