&nbsp; <font size=\"5\" class=\"\">The summer of 1960 is so deeply carved into my brain that the events remain crystal clear. &nbsp;The days started off<\/font><\/div>\n<div><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">delightfully ordinary as you will see, then on May 31 everything changed. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<p><br class=\"\"><\/p>\n<blockquote type=\"cite\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div style=\"word-wrap: break-word; -webkit-nbsp-mode: space; line-break: after-white-space;\" class=\"\">\n<div dir=\"auto\" style=\"word-wrap: break-word; -webkit-nbsp-mode: space; line-break: after-white-space;\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<blockquote type=\"cite\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div style=\"word-wrap: break-word; -webkit-line-break: after-white-space;\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">JOURNAL &nbsp;ENTRIES<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Wednesday May &nbsp;18, 1960<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">CAught the train in Blind River. &nbsp;Arrived back in Toronto from the Elliot Lake adventure. &nbsp;Phoned Marjorie from Sudbury as she is still in North Bay\u2026always easy<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">to talk with her, perhaps for a lifetime. &nbsp;My brother Eric met me at the West Toronto station and later drove Eric to work at Toronto beaches where he is a lifeguard<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">with endless stories to tell some of them quite bizarre. &nbsp;Loved the screwing match story best\u2026Binoculars used to survey Cherry Beach then yell \u2019Screwing &nbsp;Match\u2019<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">to get others excited by illicit sex. &nbsp;\u201cWhere? &nbsp;Where?\u201d &nbsp;\u201cRight here &nbsp;and Eric would show that he held a screw and a &nbsp;match in his hand.\u201d &nbsp;I found that really funny.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">&nbsp;Then &nbsp;proceeded &nbsp;to the Huntec &nbsp;office. &nbsp;A &nbsp;beautiful day of sunshine. &nbsp;FloydFaulkner is getting married &nbsp;on Saturday<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">then almost immediately will fly to Hudson\u2019s Bay for a three month job. &nbsp;No time for a honeymoon obviously. &nbsp;Floyd remains cheerful still calling &nbsp;me Fucking Al as a<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">term of endearment. &nbsp;Then picked &nbsp;up my passport and health certificate &nbsp;for entry to Southern Ireland. A flight has been booked\u2026Toronto to New York to Scotland to&nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Dublin. &nbsp; Gord Brand &nbsp;got me a &nbsp;day &nbsp;job in Kinmount using our family 1953 Meteor at 9 cents a &nbsp;mile. &nbsp;Dad is not too happy about that for he will have to<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">take public transportation all the way &nbsp;from west Toronto to Whitby\u2026couple of hours each way at least.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Thursday May 19, 1960<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Got up at 6 a.m. and &nbsp;travelled fast to Kinmount on empty roads. &nbsp;Two cow moose &nbsp;ran &nbsp;alongside the car just east of &nbsp;Kinmount. &nbsp;Arrived &nbsp;at the hidden job site &nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">where Paul Head and &nbsp;Gord Brand were waiting with the Induced Polarization (I.P,) unit all set to go. &nbsp;Lunch was fittingly eaten and washed &nbsp;down with a &nbsp;case<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">of I.P.A. (Indian &nbsp;Pale Ale) which seemed &nbsp;fitting. &nbsp;Get it? &nbsp;I.P. unit and &nbsp;I.P.A. Ale! &nbsp;We &nbsp;spent the afternoon laying base line &nbsp;cable through the bush. &nbsp;Found a strange<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">shack in the bush &nbsp;with a &nbsp;bunch of dead porcupines. &nbsp;Disgusting if killed for no reason\u2026hunters hate porcupines as quills get in the mouth and noses of their hounds.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">We drove down to Peterborough in the evening staying in luxury at the Rock Haven Motel. &nbsp;Gathered &nbsp;in the bar where Paul Head told us tales of Arizona. &nbsp;Just think<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Huntec &nbsp;had planned to send me to Arizona &nbsp;ten days ago. &nbsp;Now all has changed. &nbsp;Earlier in day we met two large turtles\u2026a painted turtle and &nbsp;a snapping turtle.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">All told it was &nbsp;a grand day.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Friday May 20, 1960<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">We drove back north to the anomaly which is a few miles east of &nbsp;Kinmount. &nbsp;Stopped &nbsp;for breakfast at a beautiful spot with a waterfall beside it. &nbsp;Continued north&nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">as &nbsp;road &nbsp;changed &nbsp;from triple lane paved to double lane to single lane to gravel to a grass covered trail. &nbsp;Sounds joyful? &nbsp;Not so. &nbsp; Every &nbsp;square inch of &nbsp;our exposed<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">flesh &nbsp;was dinner for the damn black flies who are at their peak &nbsp;right now. &nbsp;They are ravenous. &nbsp;We only managed to completed less than &nbsp;two lines, This machine&nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">(I.P.) can be quite dangerous\u2026500 volt shock if foolhardy. &nbsp;We &nbsp;are careful. &nbsp;Drove back to Kinmount which was really jumping for a change\u2026summer people have<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">arrived. &nbsp; I was too tired and dirty for any socializing. &nbsp;We &nbsp;are putting one hell of &nbsp;a lot of mileage on the \u201953 Meteor which &nbsp;is a bit of a worry as it is &nbsp;our first<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">family car and treasured by all. &nbsp;Phoned mom from a Kinmount telephone booth which was &nbsp;loaded &nbsp;with mosquitoes just waiting for someone like me.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Saturday May 21, 1960<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">We &nbsp;got a good early start in the bush today. &nbsp;Voracious flies everywhere drove us on so we managed to finish the job by 6.30. &nbsp;I left immediately for Toronto. Thick fog&nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">but managed to make it home by 9.30\u2026250 mile in three hours. \u201cThe damn car is &nbsp;full of black &nbsp;flies!\u201d, exclaimed &nbsp;Dad who &nbsp;went after them with with a swatter and<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">insect spray.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Sunday May &nbsp;22, 1960<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">We &nbsp;drove to the farm today \u2026 mom, dad and &nbsp;me\u2026too much wind, fog and rain for effective &nbsp;planting but managed to get some vegetable plants in the ground.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">The dog loved the mud. &nbsp;Later paid a short visit to Uncle Frank and Aunt Lucinda at their farm up the road. &nbsp;Tested &nbsp;the Turam E.M. unit on our &nbsp;farm by laying&nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">main cable attached to motor generator snd grounded at both ends with steel &nbsp;rods\u2026apparently need couple of ground rods at each end\u2026pounded in with sledge.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Monday May 23, 1960<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Bought a pile &nbsp;of film for the trip to Ireland then we drove Eric to his lifeguard &nbsp;station. &nbsp;Then mom, dad and I went to the horse races at Old Woodbine track. &nbsp;Dad &nbsp;had&nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">a friend &nbsp;at the gate that let us slip into the first class &nbsp;section. &nbsp;\u201cLook straight ahead and follow me, do not look at the gate keeper.\u201d &nbsp;I lost &nbsp;a bit of money but Dad made<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">a few dollars. Foggy track. &nbsp;I think Dad and Mom missed &nbsp;having Marjorie with them at the track. &nbsp;Her enthusiasm is catching\u2026loves the horses. &nbsp;Gambling is secondary<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">&nbsp;Then we drove back to Cherry Beach and picked up Eric. &nbsp;We all went for supper at Bassel\u2019s restaurant then home &nbsp;to bed. &nbsp;Typical<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">family day.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Tuesday May 24, 1960<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Drove to the office on O\u2019Connor Road today. &nbsp;What a luxury after the long hot trips on the street car and TTC bus. &nbsp;But taking the car really puts a load on dad to get from our<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">house on Annette Street, West Toronto all the way to Whitby &nbsp;I don\u2019t know how he does it frankly. Barrie Nichols gave me &nbsp;my flight tickets\u2026strange &nbsp;route via New York and &nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Scotland to reach &nbsp;Dublin. Also $300 in expense &nbsp;money. &nbsp; Gord Brand and &nbsp;Paul Head left by Land Rover for &nbsp;Arizona. &nbsp;Collected $44.31 expenses &nbsp;for use &nbsp;of the 53 Meteor\u2026<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">covered 480 miles. &nbsp;Dan Bereskin arrived from Saskatoon as a &nbsp;seismic assistant and was immediately sent to Niagara Falls &nbsp;on a project.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Wednesday May 25, 1960<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Final preparations at office. &nbsp;Seems like a &nbsp;number of the professional staff would like to be on this job. &nbsp;Why me? &nbsp;Simply because &nbsp;I used the Turam system &nbsp;on the Alaska<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">job last summer. The other guys are no longer with the company. &nbsp;My Good luck. &nbsp;Took it easy at home then decided to visit Bob Taylor and his wife Anita (Simmons) Taylor\u2026both are very happy with no financial problems<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">like poor Bill faces. &nbsp;Missed their wedding while I was in Alaska. &nbsp; Seems strange to have friends that are married.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Thursday May 26, 1960<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">All ready for Ireland now. &nbsp;Went to Scouts and &nbsp;handed out uranium &nbsp;samples from &nbsp;Elliot Lake for the lads. &nbsp;Then we &nbsp;all zipped over to the Dairy Dell for a milk shake.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Friday &nbsp;May 27,1960<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Final briefing. &nbsp;Dr. Norman Paterson asked &nbsp;me to demonstrate the AFMag. &nbsp;One of his secretaries then typed a report on the demonstration. &nbsp;She&nbsp;inadvertently&nbsp;referred to me as &nbsp;Dr. Skeoch.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Barrie Nichols took me aside saying I must pretend to be a permanent employe&#8230; Still time to plant so got 30 tomato plants for the &nbsp;farm. &nbsp;Dad &nbsp;had &nbsp;a good<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">day at the racetrack\u2026cashed some tickets. &nbsp;I wish &nbsp;Marjorie was here rather than in North Bay. &nbsp;Mom and I went to see \u2018Our Man in Havana\u2019 . &nbsp;We weighed &nbsp;my luggage<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">which was 40 pounds overweight. &nbsp;Shiela Baird dropped by and cannot believe I am flying to Ireland. &nbsp; James and David Skeoch, boys were so full of energy&nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">while crossing the Atlantic that their aunt Margaret feared they would be swept overboard. &nbsp; Agnes Skeoch husband came two years later in 1846 Robert Skeoch with the rest of the<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">children. &nbsp;Why didn\u2019t they cross together? James and John<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Skeoch. &nbsp;Where was the convent? &nbsp;Who &nbsp;was St. Skeoch? &nbsp;Assuming the place was a convent, where was that convent? &nbsp;Was it in the village of Skeoch? &nbsp;Was the story even true? &nbsp;Perhaps<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">a core of truth. (*In 2o19 I found the Chapel of St. Skeoch, a ruin about the size of a garage, a &nbsp;long way from here near Montrose, north of Edinubrgh. &nbsp;Nearby is the Rock of St. Skeoch (also named St. Stay)<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">also called Elephant Rock. &nbsp; Seems a long way from the Bannockburn fields of the Skeoch Steading.)<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">3) I wonder if the Skeochs back in 1840\u2019s celebrated the poetry of Robbie Burns. &nbsp;Much of it was written about the land below me as the plane throttled down for a landing. &nbsp;Burns was a&nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">womanizer and his &nbsp;poetry gave eternal life to so many Scottish girls who once roamed these fields below\u2026and had love affairs with Robbie. &nbsp; Procurator? &nbsp; An agent of the government perhaps in charge of the finances of Glasgow. &nbsp;Procurators in ancient times were officers of the Roman empire entrusted &nbsp;with managing the financial affairs of a province\u2026agents of the Roman&nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">emperor. &nbsp;The word &nbsp;continued to be used &nbsp;long after the Romans vacated Britain. &nbsp;Was Sir John Skeocht a relative? So the big Lancasters &nbsp;made in Toronto and &nbsp;elsewhere in North America<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">were ferried &nbsp;to Gander, Newfoundland\u2026and &nbsp;Goose Bay as well. &nbsp;Then they were topped off &nbsp;with fuel and &nbsp;flown &nbsp;by &nbsp;civilian &nbsp;pilots, &nbsp;168 of whom were women. &nbsp; One of these pilots&nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">whose son I interviewed &nbsp;long ago gathered his crew together before each flight and asked one simple question. &nbsp;\u201cIf something fails, &nbsp;do you &nbsp;want me to go straight in or try<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">a flat landing in the Atlantic?\u201d &nbsp;Most crews &nbsp;said &nbsp;\u201cstraight in\u201d because they new survival &nbsp;in the cold &nbsp;Atlantic &nbsp;was unlikely\u2026perhaps &nbsp;only a few minutes before the biting cold of the water<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">shut down the body. &nbsp;All those bombers leaving Gander landed &nbsp;here in &nbsp;Prestwick.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">The smaller aircraft\u2026fighter plans\u2026could not make the Transatlantic &nbsp;flight so semi-secret bases were built in Greenland for refuelling. &nbsp;These &nbsp;flights were also dangerous. &nbsp;Just to<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">find &nbsp;these two USAF bases was &nbsp;a chore. &nbsp;To land &nbsp;required skilled navigating up a &nbsp;long fiord, then making a sharp turn and fast descent to an airstrip hastily built in the 1940\u2019s. &nbsp;Those&nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Greenland Bases are &nbsp;now empty. &nbsp;Have been so since 1945 when US forces just pulled out fast and left much &nbsp;behind. &nbsp;They are unreachable ghost bases readily identifiable<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">by the rusting hulks &nbsp;left behind.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39040\" src=\"http:\/\/ww2today.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Prestwick-aircraft-595x449.jpg\" alt=\"Low oblique aerial view of the Transport Command Delivery Park on the Northeast Apron at Prestwick airport, Ayrshire, showing aircraft marshalled after being flown across the Atlantic. Sugar\u2019s Blues\u2019 nose art, a copy of the famous pin-up girl by pin-up artist Alberto Vargas, was painted by squadron artist Tom Walton. Sugar\u2019s Blues became well known in Canada as it was chosen for a cross-Canada bond tour. Instead of being bomb silhouettes, the 21 bombing mission marks are silhouettes of a diving female. PHOTO:  Bomber Command Museum of Canada Collection\" style=\"max-height: 1233px;\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"16BF3949-B38D-444F-955C-F6CDD18A7228\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/LastCall12.jpeg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Our cousin, George Freeman, who I never remember meeting, was killed when his Halifax Bomber was&nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">stitched with explosive shells from a &nbsp;German night fighter. &nbsp;George was a mid upper gunner with not much<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">chance to defend HX 313 &#8211; the Blonde Bomber, because night fighters liked to attach &nbsp;from&nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">behind and under. &nbsp;His best friend, &nbsp;Victor Poppa, was the tail gunner. &nbsp;As HX 313 caught fire and began<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">its death dive, Victor was thrown out of the rear bubble and fell free. &nbsp;His parachute was &nbsp;only attached &nbsp;by<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">one strap which he had to reach up above his head &nbsp;to yank &nbsp;the rip chord.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mfp-img\" alt=\"RCAF Lancaster Mk. 10s (all built by Victory Aircraft in Malton, Ontario) line the taxiway at RAF Middleton St. George before their mass departure for Canada. The reverse happened to Prestwick as the former military base became a bustling international airport.&nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">&nbsp;But not a fancy airport in 1960\u2026just 15 years after the end of World War II. &nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"word-wrap: break-word; -webkit-nbsp-mode: space; line-break: after-white-space;\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<blockquote type=\"cite\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"word-wrap: break-word; -webkit-nbsp-mode: space; line-break: after-white-space;\">\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">GUESS WHAT? &nbsp;Elvis &nbsp;Pressley landed &nbsp;here &nbsp;in March on his way &nbsp;to serve<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">with American forces &nbsp;in Germany. &nbsp;He &nbsp;was &nbsp;received &nbsp;royally. &nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Elvis meets local fans at the perimiter fence and signs autographs\" border=\"0\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"B843D56B-7A14-4382-AA50-2D76739A5DE5\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/1960-march-3-elvis-presley-prestwick-airport-scotland-7-640.jpg\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">My reception was &nbsp;not as welcoming. &nbsp;No &nbsp;sleep on the airplane &nbsp;made &nbsp;me &nbsp;very doze<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">and I fell to sleep on the hour long bus &nbsp;ride to Glasgow.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"F9934657-5FBA-4653-AACD-560DB4BD1B30\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/585039d8dffc6af788694c6ef50ea4cf.jpeg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Downtown Glasgow was not what i expected. &nbsp; The city buildings are layered with a &nbsp;century\u2019s worth of &nbsp; coal dust which<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">&nbsp; &nbsp;I had expected a city much &nbsp;like Toronto with lots &nbsp;of &nbsp;open &nbsp;space and modern buildings. &nbsp;Trees and parks.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Glasgow was the &nbsp;reverse of these expectations. &nbsp;Barren\u2026never saw a tree. Somehow I had to get to an address outside my hotel (St. Enoch). <\/font><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\" class=\"\">&nbsp; With help from many locals, i managed to get heading in correct&nbsp;<\/span><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">direction by subway.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"26699DF4-A211-472C-B6B5-2BFA30BC22FE\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/9b92079fe428a89bec3db94da637ed9d.jpeg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Stone staircases &nbsp;in the tenements were worn, dark, damp and disconcerting\u2026as above.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-b51d86a42de219a\" alt=\"A life of despair: These images of Glasgow slums in the 60s and 70s include a father and his children sat silently in their Gorbals tenement flat in 1970. Above the fireplace, the wallpaper is peeling and clothing has been hung on a makeshift line to dry\" class=\"b-loaded blkBorder img-share\" apple-inline=\"yes\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/2D5D6F7800000578-0-image-a-1_1444784774565.jpeg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">GLASGOW in 1960 was one of the most poverty stricken &nbsp;cities &nbsp;in England, perhaps Europe. &nbsp;Families were crammed &nbsp;into dreary blackened &nbsp;stone<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">tenements &nbsp;that stretched as far as my eyes &nbsp;could &nbsp;see. &nbsp;This family pictured above is keeping warm in front of their coal &nbsp;burning<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">cast iron combined furnace and &nbsp;cook &nbsp;stove. &nbsp;It is &nbsp;hidden by their wet laundry. &nbsp; Most of these tenements &nbsp;had no &nbsp;running water and<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">the toilets were small brick buildings in the rear of the tenements. &nbsp; Others &nbsp;may have had running water but families &nbsp;shared toilets.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">I was there in 1950 just as slums &nbsp;were being cleared and replaced with tall apartment style buildings with running water.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">It was very dreary. &nbsp;Shocking! They rented the third floor of the house next door and were overjoyed<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">to be in Canada but at the same time a bit homesick<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">\u201cAlan, you must visit my mother in Glasgow.\u201d<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">\u201cOne night layover before flight to Dublin.:\u2019<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">\u201cGrand\u2026you will have time then. &nbsp;She would &nbsp;love th see you.\u201d<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">\u201cHow will she know?\u201d<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">\u201cI phoned her last night to tell her\u2026she wants you to come for supper.\u201d<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">\u201cTerrific.\u201d<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">And so the visit was planned. &nbsp;I would drop in on Mrs. Langdon for a &nbsp;short visit. &nbsp;KLM had already given me tickets for&nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">meals at St Enoch hotel along with ferry service from Prestwick to Glasgow. &nbsp;Had a shave and converted some money to British&nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">pounds then had a &nbsp;luxurious meal in the hotel dining room before venturing in search of Mrs. Langdon. &nbsp;That was the upside.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">The downside was &nbsp;Glasgow\u2019s grime reflected in faces of people on the street. &nbsp;A fast judgment and hopefully &nbsp;wrong. &nbsp;I decided<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">to ride the \u201cUnderground\u201d rather than take a taxi. &nbsp;Twice I got off and climbed to the surface just to see \u201cwhat suburban Glasgow<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">looked like\u201d. &nbsp;Depressing. &nbsp;Seemingly endless black tenements. &nbsp;No trees, no grass\u2026no cheerfulness. &nbsp;Found Mrs. Langdon\u2019s<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">building and climbed the dark stone stairway to her floor. &nbsp;Knocked and received a joyous welcome. &nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">\u201cCome in, Alan, I\u2019ve heard so much about you\u2026and &nbsp;about Canada.\u201d<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">The apartment was tiny, perhaps &nbsp;two rooms\u2026a bed room and the combined kitchen and living room at<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">the centre of which was a back cast iron coal burning stove which also served as &nbsp;a cooking facility.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">\u201cYou must be hungry!\u201d &nbsp;I had &nbsp;just eaten a huge meal at St. Enoch Hotel but dared not say that for<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">a special supper was underway.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">\u201cI have a &nbsp;special meal for you\u2026steak with a fried egg on top\u2026a specialty.\u201d<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">\u201cLooks wonderful.\u201d &nbsp;My gut was already full but I somehow made room because I knew this was a great<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">occasion for Mrs. Langdon. &nbsp;Her friends kept dropping by \u2026 Georgia and many others.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Now the genuine warmth of this greeting almost made me cry. &nbsp;Grown 22 year old male. When I left Mrs. Langdon\u2019s&nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">place the place seemed less &nbsp;bleak. &nbsp;The lyrics of \u201cI belong to Glasgow\u201d may not exactly fit this visit for there was<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">no alcohol involved but the spirit of the song fits perfectly.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">\u201cI belong to Glasgow<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">dear old Glasgow town<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">There\u2019s something the matter with Glasgow<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Cause it\u2019s going roon and roon<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">I\u2019m only a common old working lad<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">As &nbsp;anyone here can see<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">But when I get a couple of drink on a Saturday<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Glasgow belong to me.\u201d<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-8912caf689a6b2fe\" alt=\"A tram packed full of passengers makes its way up Arygle Street in central Glasgow in April 1960. The People spoke nicely to me, gave directions, made me feel &nbsp;welcome. &nbsp;I was not looking for trouble. I was Sober.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">It was daylight.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">The situation could have changed dramatically had I shown support for either the Celitc or Ranger football clubs. &nbsp;Violence was easily triggered by an offhand remark like \u201cAre you a Ranger or Celtic?&#8221;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">The City of Glasgow. even today in 2019, is sectioned off \u2026 &nbsp; &nbsp;The Celtic Football Club draws Catholic and Irish supporters. &nbsp;The Rangers &nbsp;draw Protestant and British supporters.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">&nbsp; Ranger and Celtic fans share strong yet opposite religious convictions. Death from cholera &nbsp;is fast. Sadly, The last part of the body affected is t he brain so cholera victims know<\/font><\/div>\n<div><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">what is &nbsp;happening but cannot resist the millions and millions of tiny cholera bacteria that wrack their body. &nbsp;They die. &nbsp;Whole families died in their homes.<\/font><\/div>\n<div><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">&nbsp;Cholera bacteria is carried by human beings and lives in our&nbsp;lower intestine. &nbsp;In times of natural disaster or times<\/font><\/div>\n<div><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">of compromised water systems, cholera celebrate the chance to reproduce and infect as many people as possible. &nbsp;We require water to survive. &nbsp;We must have water. &nbsp;And we will &nbsp;drink water even<\/font><\/div>\n<div><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">if the source is questionable. &nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Glasgow, Kilwinning, Stevenston\u2026all towns, villages, farms of Lowland Scotland\u2026were suddenly exposed to a cholera epidemic in 1847. &nbsp; Why? &nbsp;Overcrowded tenements &nbsp;with unbelievably &nbsp;dirty toilet<\/font><\/div>\n<div><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">facilities. &nbsp;Tenements with outdoor toilets shared by many people was one source of the epidemic. &nbsp;Communal water pumps close to these outdoor toilets allowed<\/font><\/div>\n<div><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">the invisible tiny cholera bacteria to get into the stomachs of thousands of people very quickly. &nbsp;Worse than the outdoor \u201cprivies\u201d was the placement of so called \u2018water closets\u2019 in homes across Britain.<\/font><\/div>\n<div><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">These water closets were a cruel joke. &nbsp;They may have seemed sanitary when used &nbsp;and flushed but they were not so. &nbsp;There were no sewer lines! Where did the excrement go then? &nbsp;The human waste&nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">simply dropped straight from the water closet to the cellars of overcrowded tenements or the high class family homes. &nbsp;Every basement was a &nbsp;dung heap\u2026had &nbsp;been so &nbsp;for ages. &nbsp;If the pile of dung<\/font><\/div>\n<div><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">got too deep then dung collectors were hired to shovel out the basement and dump it on nearby or distant fields. &nbsp;Dry dung was bad but wet dung was infinitely worse for the the Cholera Bacteria just<\/font><\/div>\n<div><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">loved the combination of dung and water. &nbsp;The bacteria could &nbsp;replicate with the speed of summer lightning. &nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Today public sewer lines make a cholera pandemic unlikely. &nbsp;In 1847 Glasgow there were no sewer lines. &nbsp;20,000 people were crammed into dilapidated tenements. As many as sixteen<\/font><\/div>\n<div><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">people were observed sleeping in a &nbsp;single room. &nbsp;The dung piled up. &nbsp;As if that was not worse, the city was &nbsp;crowded with horses\u2026thousands of them. &nbsp;Public streets were littered with horse dung and<\/font><\/div>\n<div><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">urine. &nbsp;Where to put it? &nbsp; Domestic &nbsp;animals destined for slaughter were also a &nbsp;problem. &nbsp;Street-side butchers often just threw animal waster \u2018over the fence\u2019\u2026innards, blood, bones. &nbsp;The same<\/font><\/div>\n<div><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">was done with fish waste. &nbsp;Glasgow smelled terrible. &nbsp;Like a &nbsp;sewer. &nbsp;So did every city in Europe but Glasgow was &nbsp;particularly bad because of the poverty and congestion. &nbsp;Some really poor people, often<\/font><\/div>\n<div><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">children, rummaged for rags and cast offs in the dung heaped basements of homes and tenements.
