class=&#8221;&#8221;><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Yes, black walnuts are edible but they need to be prepared. &nbsp;Here are long<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">and short instructions.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">SHORT INSTRUCTIONS<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Gather a basket of black walnuts. &nbsp;Peal off the soft outer<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">shell which turns black and gooey &nbsp;then put the walnuts&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">some place dry where the squirrels can\u2019t get them.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Then place each walnut in a workshop vice to smash<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">open the shell. &nbsp;Use a small sharp tool to weasel out the nut<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">in pieces.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">LONG INSTRCUTIONS<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">1) Gather pile of black walnuts<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">2) &nbsp;Let the worms (invisible) help get much of the black outer casing removed&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">3) Use gloves so you do not stain your hands.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">4) Wash the shells in pail of water, stir with paddle\u2026rinse.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">5) Wash again\u2026rinse again<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">6) Wash again until water is clear<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">7) Allow nuts to dry in warm place<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">8) Be sure squirrels cannot get access.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">9) Place each nut vertically workshop &nbsp;vice\u2026.crush<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">10) Separate shell fragments from nut meat carefully<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">11) Taste nut meat<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">12) Plan gourmet use for nut meats<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">13) Or\u2026put some nut meat on your bird feeder as a treat<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&#8220;Black Walnuts are delicious to eat.&nbsp; We used to gather hundreds of the walnuts and put them on top of the hot air ducts in the basement to dry for a few weeks.&nbsp; When they were dry we would take them down and crack them open.&nbsp; The work bench vice was great for cracking them.&nbsp; The trees themselves do tend to prevent other trees from growing under them.&nbsp; Their roots seem to secret some kind of toxin that discourages them but smaller shrubs and grasses would grow under them.&nbsp;
