margin-left: 0px;\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/th-4.jpeg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">ALAN, I NEED HELP<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cAlan, stop the tractor, I need help!\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cWhat\u2019s the problem?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cThe cat got out\u2026I saw her heading for the swamp,\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cHow did she escape?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cI have no idea\u2026doors were closed.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Our new family addition &nbsp;is CHELSEA BUN &nbsp;so named because she<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">looks like &nbsp;a Chelsea bun\u2026dark with patches of cream coloured fur here and there\u2026one definite whitish paw and a<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp;cream coloured dollop between her eyes. &nbsp;She is not likely to win a prize at a cat show. &nbsp; &nbsp;Here tail is broken. &nbsp; But she is the<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">smartest cat we have ever owned. &nbsp;Smart enough to dart out a crack in the door without us noticing.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" style=\"margin-top: 1.4px; margin-left: 0px;\" class=\"\" id=\"yui_3_5_1_1_1693500211738_1717\" apple-inline=\"yes\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/th-5.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"\" id=\"yui_3_5_1_1_1693500211738_2431\" apple-inline=\"yes\" style=\"margin-top: 2.8px; margin-left: 0px;\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/th-7.jpeg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">You go around the swamp from one side, I will go the other way shaking the food bag.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Maybe we can get her before a coyote does.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cNot much danger of coyotes here at the farm.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cCity coyotes are far more numerous.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cA few years ago neighbourhood cats roamed quite freely &nbsp; today we have not seen<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">a cat for years. &nbsp; Cats make a good coyote dinner except for the fur which is obviously excreted in coyote dung.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Few coyotes at the farm. &nbsp; But they are present if unseen. &nbsp;So we &nbsp;were a bit anxious.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">We were given Chelsea Bun by a farm neighbour, Elizabeth Porter. &nbsp;She had a surprise batch of kittens in March<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u2026the result of a feral Tom Cat who briefly visited and left his calling card. &nbsp; Tom cats are rare. &nbsp;Most are<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">,fixed, (i.e. castrated) . &nbsp; Tom cats are generally unwelcome\u2026like stallions, bulls, boars and other males.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">We did know one thing about the father of our kitten. &nbsp;He was tortoise shell \u2026. like the Chelsea bun.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">But that is all tha was known. &nbsp;No one saw him do the \u2018job\u2019 on the neighbour farm cat. &nbsp; It was likely a night time<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">romance.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&#8220;Our kitten must look like the father\u201d &nbsp;said Elizabeth. So different from their mother.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">I searched one side of the swamp and could hear Marjorie shaking &nbsp;the cat food box. &nbsp; We found &nbsp;nothing.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cWhere did you see her?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cDown by he Shaver barn\u2026..she darted across to the swamp. &nbsp; Lean and swift\u2026no intention &nbsp;of&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">being tricked by food.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cLet\u2019s give up and hope she comes back on her own.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">So we went back to the farm house and guess what we found?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cAlan, the kitten is back in the house.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cImpossible.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Chelsea Bun was snuggling up against Marjorie as if nothing had happened.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">And nothing had happened, &nbsp;No escape at all. &nbsp;Then sho in hell were we searching for in<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the swamp?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cI think that was Chelsea Bun\u2019s father. &nbsp; Looked exactly like Chelsea Bun\u2026.tortoise shell colours.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cA wild cat\u2026feral\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cBut our farm is several kilometres from the Porter\/Kilner farn &nbsp; Seems a long distance.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cMaybe not.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cDo you think the Tom cat came to see his daughter\u2026to see Chelsea Bun?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cI think that is pushing things. &nbsp; Cats are not people.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cMaybe he is living in one of our barns but cautious &nbsp;and never seen.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cLike &nbsp;the coyotes.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">EVIDENCE SEEMS TO SUPPORT THE IDEA THAT THIS FERAL TOM CAT WAS REALLY THE FATHER<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">OF CHELSEA BUN, &nbsp; DID HE REALLY COME TO CHECK UP ON HIS DAUGHTER?. &nbsp;NOW THAT IS PURE CONJECTURE.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">TOM CAT TERRITORY<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"compTitle fz-32 fc-midnight mb-8 lh-40\" style=\"margin: 0px 0px 8px; padding: 0px; line-height: 40px; color: rgb(16, 21, 24); font-size: 32px; overflow: hidden; position: relative;\">\n<div style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px; overflow: hidden; zoom: 1; display: -webkit-box; -webkit-box-orient: vertical; -webkit-line-clamp: 2;\" class=\"\">1,351 acres (2.1 square miles)<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fz-16 cl-l fc-midnight compTextList lh-24 mb-20\" style=\"margin: 0px 0px 20px; padding: 0px; clear: left; line-height: 24px; color: rgb(16, 21, 24); font-size: 16px;\">\n<ul role=\"region\" aria-label=\"carousel\" style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px; list-style: none;\" class=\"\">\n<li class=\"va-top ov-h\" role=\"group\" aria-label=\"Item 1 of 1\" style=\"margin: 0px 0px 4px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: top; overflow: hidden; zoom: 1;\"><br class=\"\"><\/li>\n<li class=\"va-top ov-h\" role=\"group\" aria-label=\"Item 1 of 1\" style=\"margin: 0px 0px 4px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: top; overflow: hidden; zoom: 1;\">EXCERPT: &nbsp; The scientists found that the feral cats had home ranges that stretched across large areas; one male kitty\u2019s range covered&nbsp;1,351 acres (2.1 square miles). They roamed over a wide variety of habitats, most often in urban areas and grasslands, including a restored prairie.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"compTitle fc-midnight cl-b\" style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px; clear: both; color: rgb(16, 21, 24); overflow: hidden; position: relative;\">\n<div style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px; font-family: Roboto, \"helvetica neue\", helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<p style=\"font-family: \"open sans\", sans-serif; font-size: 17.6px; line-height: 1.88; word-break: break-word;\" class=\"\">In winter, they preferred urban spots, forests and farmland, all places that would provide greater shelter from bad weather and help them keep warm. Cats that had owners, meanwhile, tended to stick close to home, with their range sizes averaging a mere 4.9 acres.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: \"open sans\", sans-serif; font-size: 17.6px; line-height: 1.88; word-break: break-word;\" class=\"\">Feral kitties were also more active than cats that had homes. Unowned cats spent 14 percent of their time in what the scientists classified as \u201chigh activity\u201d (running or hunting, for example), compared with only 3 percent for kitties with owners. \u201cThe unowned cats have to find food to survive, and their activity is significantly greater than the owned cats throughout the day and through the year, especially in winter,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/pub_releases\/2011-05\/uoia-rtt052611.php\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); text-underline-offset: 2px; text-decoration-thickness: 2px;\" class=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a>study co-author Jeff Horn of the University of Illinois.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: \"open sans\", sans-serif; font-size: 17.6px; line-height: 1.88; word-break: break-word;\" class=\"\">In addition, the feral cats\u2019 daily activity patterns\u2014sleeping during the day and being active at night, which likely reflects the behavior of their prey, small mammals, as well as lets them better avoid humans\u2014was very different from kitties with homes. Those animals were most active in the morning and evening, when their owners were likely home and awake.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: \"open sans\", sans-serif; font-size: 17.6px; line-height: 1.88; word-break: break-word;\" class=\"\">Only one owned kitty died during the study, compared with six feral cats. Two of the feral cats were killed by coyotes, and the researchers believe that at least some of the others were killed by other cats, as the owned kitty was.
