Today, August 11, 2023 that number has been reduced to 13. &nbsp;How did this happen?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">STAGE ONE: GETTING INTO THE CANADIAN ARMY AS A POTENTIAL RECRUIT. ..BASIC TRAINING<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cGrandma I can now make my own bed?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cIs that part of Basic Training in the Canadian Army, Jackson?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cTraining sergeants seem to think so. &nbsp;If the corners are not perfectly square they make us do ouR &nbsp;again and again and again.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cSeems joining the Canadian Army is basic housekeeping.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cBet you can\u2019t make youR own bed Grandpa?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cCorrect. &nbsp;I thought basic training was gruelling.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cIt was. Watch this\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">And there on a street corner in Edmonton, Jack and his partner fell to the ground and began doing push ups<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">with lightning speed. &nbsp; In the time it would &nbsp;take me to do one, they would do ten, &nbsp;Then they stopped leapt to<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">their feet\u2026real for combat.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cSergeants make us do push ups for slight infractions or no infractions.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cAre sergeants tough on you?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cYou bet they are. &nbsp;Everything is a trial and failure followed by \u201cSkeoch, give me sixty!\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cMake yoou angry Jack?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cNo I expected Basic Training to be tough. &nbsp;Some guys were not ready and they quit\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">STAGE TWO: &nbsp;THE HAIRCUT CAPER\u2026.SHAVED HEADS<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">AN army barber shaved Jack bald \u2026.all recruits wee &nbsp;treated the same which marked them as army boys. &nbsp;They became targets for<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the local tough guys in Edmonton which could have led to fist fights had not the sergeants &nbsp;said&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cIf you get into fights<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">in Edmonton you will be just let go by the army.\u201d (my words) &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cWhy recjruits have their heads shaved?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201clots of reasons. &nbsp;Standardization for instance\u2026.everyone looks the same. &nbsp; Sense of equality. Comrades. &nbsp; Clean break with previous life. Originally&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp;to ensure no recruit spread head lice. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">And so Jack survived Basic Training at CFB Edmonton. &nbsp;There was a graduation ceremony in an air force hanger<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">which we attended. &nbsp;We met the sergeants who were &nbsp;easy to talk to but the recruits kept their distance from them.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Jack had learned one of the fundamentals of army life. &nbsp;The Chain of Command. &nbsp;\u201cThat will keep us alive in combat.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">We back up each other and follow orders.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Not every potential army recruit is accepted. &nbsp;A great number are turned away.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Jack was accepted. &nbsp;His friends were not. &nbsp;There were 52 recruits in his Basic Training unit. &nbsp;A little over a year later that<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">number had fallen to 13. &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">It is a long story\u2026stays with me. &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"BLA_wBUJrga_SkfJ8won\" alt=\"florence bay,magnetic island,queensland,australia - magnetic island australia stock pictures, royalty-free photos &amp; images\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"E5A08557-84B2-4DEF-9E07-C65CF436D0A2\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/florence-bay-magnetic-island-queensland-australia.jpg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"BLA_wBUJrga_SkfJ8won\" alt=\"wwii bunker on magnetic island, queensland australia - magnetic island australia stock pictures, royalty-free photos &amp; images\" loading=\"lazy\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"6D1CFEFE-9080-4B39-8FA4-F7A4FD93E0C5\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/wwii-bunker-on-magnetic-island-queensland-australia.jpg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">STAGE 3 &nbsp;AUSTRALIAN ADVENTURE\u2014 CANE TOADS, DEATH ADDERS AND DEADLY SPIDERS<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cQUIET! &nbsp;This is part of our stealth training. &nbsp;Do not make any noise\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cImagine , the two of us are the only recruits sent to Austraia for stealth training.\u201d\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cHush! &nbsp;For God\u2019s sake shut up.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cAnd here we are crawling on our stomach through one of the most dangerous places on earth.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cIf you keep talking we will fail.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cDamn scary place. The Western Australian Department of Environment and Conservation, along with the University of Sydney, developed these sausage-shaped baits as a tool in order to train native animals not to eat the toads.
