REAL TRAPPER\u2019S CABIN as found in 1957<\/p>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">alan skeoch<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">august 4, 2023<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"E9FE1904-E4BB-4E16-A06E-75BF12D59A3B\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/F4CBB810-E439-4F0B-BF80-718CB02C17F4_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"9BC31CE5-B52A-4A94-BCB9-11D621A2EA69\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/54603DEB-5D3F-42B5-A863-4A2A5A52C516_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp;The Trapper\u2019s cabin was a surprise discovery by our crew in 1957. &nbsp;There were no trails<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">to the cabin. &nbsp;No tree blazes. &nbsp;Seemed to be used for winter access although the cabin was on the banks of a small stream<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">that ultinatey flowed into the mighty Groundhog River which emptied into James Bay en route to the Arctic.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">The cabin was primitive \u2026. one door and one window. &nbsp;Door closed but window smashed wide open perhaps by a<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">ber smelling a carcass. &nbsp; Inside was room to sleep and a place to sit beside a hand made table although the signs of&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">life were hard to decipher since the sod roof had leaked for some time.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">I wish I had taken the time to photograph the interior but my try Brownie camera would not have<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">captured much and most can be deduced by rotting remains in the cabin exterior. &nbsp;I seem to remember spikes on the wall<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">of the cabin where the trapper stopped skins from bodies. &nbsp;There were some skeletal remains on the ground<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp; But little else.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Some disaster may have happened because we came across places where the trapper had set his traps and&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">just loft them. &nbsp; Some had the carcasses of small animals such as beaver or muskrat. &nbsp;Left to suffer death<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">in &nbsp;leg hold trap. &nbsp; Leg hold traps &nbsp;are now illegal. &nbsp;Quick death traps are better. &nbsp;Better for whom?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">What were we doing in the wilderness in the first place?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Briefly put we were searching for magnetic ore bodies located in the bed rock deep<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">bellow the overburden of spruce, birch, poplar and cedar that clothed a section of Canada&#8217;s boreal foesrt in the&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">untracked (except for the trapper) &nbsp;wilderness east and west of the Groundhog River of Northern Ontario.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Floyd Faulkner, Bob Hilkar, Walter Helstein and I were the ground team. &nbsp;We had air photos that gave odd readings<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">by airborne magnetometer that had to be checked and perhaps staked. &nbsp;Highly secret work.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Today this is all done by helicopters in a few days, &nbsp;For us it would take all summer and a good part of September.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Lots of blood, sweat and tears. &nbsp;Amend that no tears but lots of blood lost to bugs and axe cuts\u2026and lots of sweat.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Noone would &nbsp;ever believe how tough that job turned out to be. &nbsp;Worst thing was when Walter sipped on a log and impaled his<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">hand on a sharpened tag alder picket. &nbsp;Weather turned bad and it took several days before a plane could reach us. &nbsp;His hand got<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">infected but we cold nothing for him. &nbsp;We never saw<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Walter again.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Over the years I gathered a good pile of trappers goods\u2026\u2026traps, bear skin coat, moose skulls with antlers, assored skulls,&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">stretching boards ,blazing axes, beaver skins, canoes etc. etc. &nbsp;
