&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp; Finding TIGALIE was like OPENING &nbsp;a door to a treasure room.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&#8230;much about the past, particularly the years around 1912 when<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Shenlie stables was famous as a Stud Farm. &nbsp;Only made famous<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">because of one horse\u2026TIGALIE.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp; She was a small horse\u2026.a filllyl\u2026a grey&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">filly. &nbsp;Not much was expected &nbsp;of her at Epson Downs on June 5, 1912. &nbsp;Se ws racing<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">against 19 stallions\u2026.big, aggressive horses. &nbsp; The best of 1912 three year old&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">hoses.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">LOOK AT HER\u2026.TIGALIE<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"96D86D1A-A011-47A2-928A-62C719C731C6\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Tagalie_and_Mabella.jpg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">THIS IS tigalie in 1915 with one of her colts, Mabella.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">. &nbsp;The photo was taken three years after she won<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the Epsom Derby\u2019s 1,000 guinea purse.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">We were walking down Rectory Lane, an obscure farm road<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">almost overwhelmed by forest and shrubs. &nbsp; An opening..a long<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">ell low brick wall announced SHENLEY STUD FARM 1903.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">The bricks were old and faded as was the stone name. &nbsp;Beside that<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">sign was a smaller sign\u2026.so small that the name TIGALIE was almost<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">obscured.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"AEA697E8-6BAD-4F63-BC0B-08DFA09F505F\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/6CF55AA1-CE6F-44C9-BEAF-6C00483280C3_1_105_c-1.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">This sign was designed by Nolan Skeoch in 2023 to advertise &nbsp;Shenley Equestrian\u2026.located in the same horse styles where<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">once TIGALIE was housed.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"E0D8AFCA-E316-493E-8F46-FA42E98268F9\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/D37B7EA3-0DE2-444F-8F46-3D4DAAB54D9E_1_105_c-1.jpeg\" class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"99F8858C-A0C8-4C8B-9994-0A5DA1CA8792\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/E8C2842F-2B1D-4258-B753-9E5A598671EA_1_105_c-1.jpeg\" class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"7AE9D62E-9046-4305-88EA-A215889D5184\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/4665B364-FEAD-4B17-8FBB-5F036680469F_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">BELOW IS A DESCRIPTION OF THE EPSOM DERBY RACE ON JUNE 5, 1912<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;ENGLISH DERBY DAY, JUNE 5, 2012<\/p>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">GREAT RACE RUN IN A BLAZE OF SUNSHINE<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">MULTITUDE GREETS KING AND QUEEN<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">EPSON DOWNS<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cThe gray mare is The best horse after all.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Derby Day ws Ladies\u2019 Day all the way. The<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp;beautiful TAGALIE won the great race with<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">ALL the ease and consciousness of a fine lady leading&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">her admirers across the green. &nbsp;She never faltered,<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">never for one moment was her supremacy in doubt.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">The flag fell, the historic Derby roar \u201cThey\u2019re off!\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">went up in the glowing sunshine with the excited sob<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">of tens and tens of thousand at the tail of it, and the<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">brave little lady horse, with proudly arched neck<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">and sweeping tail, went away and up the hill like a hare.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">She was the only filly in the race, and a gray one at that.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">They were all saying that a gray horse never had won<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">theDerby, and never could. So there you are!<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">TAGALIE not only won; she was supreme through every<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">moment of the race. &nbsp;Very soon nineteen gentlemen horses,&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">with &nbsp;the right spirit of the true equine aristocrat acknowledged<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">themselves TAGALIE\u2019S faithful servants\u2026all the way she was<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">showing them her heels\u2026silver plated, flashing like<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">summer lightning.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">There never was a prettier race\u2026.the weather perfect.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">One little spatter of rain then the sun came out and shone most&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">gloriously in a heaven of blue\u2026little white clouds romped<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">across the sky like lambs. The air was sweet, the turf&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">was green and soft\u2026soft enough for the most tender<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">footed filly that ever cantered.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">The crowd was tremendous. &nbsp;Mr. Henry Chaplin, who won<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the Derby win 1867 was bluff and hearty as ever as he gazed<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">through his monocle and declared that he never remembered such<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">a gathering. &nbsp;The crowd stretched without a visible break<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">around the whole vast circle of the course\u2026all the fun of&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the fair raged and shrilled. &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Just before lunch King<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">George V and Queen drove up from&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the Downs station and the entire seethe of humanity<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">burst outing a cheer of heart greeting.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp;King George V wore a morning suit and a silk hat; the Queen<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">a smart grey cloth coat and shirt with a pretty grey and<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">white hat adorned with white feathers. &nbsp;The large party in<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the Royal Box included his elder daughter Princess Victoria<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">of Schleswig-Holtein, the Duke and Duchess pf Teck and the&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Hereditry Grand Duke of Mecklenberg-Strelitz. &nbsp;A great&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">number of fashionable people were there but Epson,<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">unlike Ascot, is not s dressy function; it is a popular<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">carnival (however) full of spirit and the clamour<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">of a go-as-you-please festival.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Note: The English Royal family were part &nbsp;German. &nbsp;Odd<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">situation on verge of World War One.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">June 5, 1912<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span style=\"font-family: -webkit-standard; background-color: rgb(192, 192, 192);\" class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">This was run on Wednesday 5th June 1912 and the winner was bred by Mr Walter Raphael and trained by Dawson.Waugh at Newmarket. There were 20 runners from an initial entry of 353. The winner won by 4 lengths with 2 lengths between second and third. The winners time was 2 min 38.8 secs.<\/font><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">WHAT ABOUT THE MONEY?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Two very different notes about the money. &nbsp; &nbsp;One source said that the<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">owner of TAGALIE received a purse of 1,000 gunnies, the&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">other was much higher at &nbsp;more than 6,000 &nbsp; &nbsp;pounds..<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">I assume The \u2018purse\u2019 was 1,000 guineas. &nbsp;Let\u2019 s work with that figure even though<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the actual winnings in the Epsom Derby &nbsp;of 1912 may have been more than six&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">time that figure. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">1) One thousand guineas in 1910 is worth 78,172.20 pounds &#8230;over $1.000,000 ,,,&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">,,,, a lot of money that Walter Raphael shoved in his pocket&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">2) What could be bought with a thousand guineas in 1912. &nbsp; &nbsp;For a starter Mr. Raphael; could buy<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">36 ,more &nbsp;horses for Shenley Stud Farm. &nbsp;And he probably did because TIGALIE would<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">need company. &nbsp; She would be bred.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">3_ Water Raphael could buy 103 cows but &nbsp;There is no indication<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">of that. &nbsp;Mr. Raphael was a financier living in London. &nbsp; He brought friends out to his Shenley&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Stud Farm from London for visits. &nbsp;He did not live there. &nbsp; Mr. Lynne ran the stud farm fo rMr Raphael<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">and lived on he adjoining Elliot Farm with his family. &nbsp;He should have gotten a reward \u2026 part of the purse<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">but there is no record of that. &nbsp; Wealthy people know how to hold on to their money\u2026.sorry that is&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">an unkind remarkL<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">4) A thousand guineas could also purchase 1851 stones of wool or &nbsp;781 quarters of wheat \u2026I leave that<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">for you to convert.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">5) Now this final figure is fascinating. &nbsp;It says so much about England and &nbsp;the landed aristocracy.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Walter Rapuhael could by 3030 \u2018days wages\u2019 from skilled tradesmen with that thousand guines purse. &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">He could hire a skilled horseman for nearly 3 years. &nbsp; And he probably did.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">6) Suppose the purse was six times tht figure as most sources say. &nbsp; Now tha is a lot of money\/<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Little wonder that more than 340 English horsemen tried to qualify for a position at the Epson Downs<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">starting gate in 1912. &nbsp;There was only room for 20 horses\u2026and &nbsp;only one of those horses was a filly<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u2026the only grey horses in the race. &nbsp; So a guinea in dollars on the 24 th March 2018 would of been worth $1.49 .
