{"id":2450,"date":"2019-02-15T22:57:53","date_gmt":"2019-02-16T03:57:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/?p=2450"},"modified":"2019-02-15T22:58:31","modified_gmt":"2019-02-16T03:58:31","slug":"john-skeochs-threshing-outfit-roverhurst-sask-1927","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/?p=2450","title":{"rendered":"John Skeoch&#8217;s Threshing outfit , Roverhurst, Sask,  1927"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>While &nbsp;thrashing his wheat crop of 1927, John &nbsp;Skeoch hired a photographer to capture &nbsp;just how<\/p>\n<div class=\"\">much he had &nbsp;invested in his enterprise\u2026Steam Tractor, &nbsp;Threshing machine, &nbsp;hay wagons, hired help (and neighbours).<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">This was &nbsp;no small venture. &nbsp; While the home farm was in &nbsp;Fergus, Ontario, the Skeoch brothers also had &nbsp;sections (640 acre sections)<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">near Riverhurst, Saskatchewan. &nbsp; John and his &nbsp;wife Anne lived &nbsp;in the west \u2026 built a &nbsp;stone house as was the custom with Scottish<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">farmers. &nbsp;That proved to be an error as large numbers of Garter snakes also like the stone foundations. &nbsp;Eventually the house had<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">to be abandoned. &nbsp;No &nbsp;matter\u2026the wheat crops were terrific. &nbsp;(P.S. &nbsp;I like the word thrashing better than threshing\u2026as in \u201cI will give you<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">a good thrashing\u201d\u2026That\u2019s what they &nbsp;did to the wheat tassels.)<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Re:Photo\u2026a little lobsided \u2026had to do this &nbsp;to avoid glare.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">alan skeoch<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Feb. 2019<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"731BCE48-6A10-48AF-83E6-F75B6C907F83\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/NyiNxkaLSHCpXuqIp46DA_thumb_97e46.jpg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">When Marjorie, Kevin, Andrew and &nbsp;I visited the Keillor farm (village nearest to the Skeoch farms)&#8230; the ruins of these machine were part of &nbsp;uncle John\u201ds graveyard for vintage implements. &nbsp;We did not have much<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">time to appreciate them though because &nbsp;a big windstorm blew up and we had a hell of a time holding down &nbsp;our tent. &nbsp;My pants &nbsp;disappeared &nbsp;in that windstorm. &nbsp; Next morning we had<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">breakfast with Aunt Anne &nbsp;and &nbsp;Uncle John in the stone farm house. &nbsp;Yes, the snakes were there\u2026peeping &nbsp;at us &nbsp;through cracks in the stone wall\u2026and &nbsp;curled up in the coffee cups. &nbsp;You are probably wondering<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">about my pants. &nbsp;Maybe you think I had breakfast in my underwear. &nbsp;Let me leave that tough in your head.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">alan skeoch<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Feb. 2019<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While &nbsp;thrashing his wheat crop of 1927, John &nbsp;Skeoch hired a photographer to capture &nbsp;just how much he had &nbsp;invested in his enterprise\u2026Steam Tractor, &nbsp;Threshing machine, &nbsp;hay wagons, hired help (and neighbours).
