How would you handle this situation?  My Grade 13 Home Form decided to play a joke on me<\/div>\n
THEY took over the blackboard where I had drawn a gross caricature.<\/div>\n

Someone wrote <\/div>\n
\u201cMr. Skeoch ,alias E.T.” (the extra terrestrial movie had just been released)<\/div>\n
The drawing was mine\u2026big nose, big mouth.<\/div>\n
The words were written by someone in 13D<\/div>\n

Today, May 30, 2032, I asked Marjorie what she thought of E.T.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
\u201cWho?\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cRemember the movie  E\/T\/. the extra terrestrial; who visited our planet\u2026toured on a bicycle <\/div>\n
\u201cYes, that would be the late 1960\u2019s,  why do you ask?\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cIf you had to describe E.T. in one word, what would it be?\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cInquisitive\u2026..he was curious\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cIs that a good characteristic?\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201c\u201dOf course it is.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cThen this picture must be flattering.\u201d<\/div>\n
(Students felt secure enough to make fun of me  and still have respect)<\/div>\n

WHAT THE PICTURE REVEALS<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
1) I AM wearing a 3 piece suit so pic must have been taken around 1970<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
2) Picture reveals that my home form, 13D felt relaxed enough to write \u201cMr. Skeoch alias<\/div>\n
E.T.\u201d  and sign collective name 13D<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
3) The caricature was draw by me.  Big nose, big mouth, brush cut.   I think I was teaching Voltaire\u2019s book Candide in<\/div>\n
which the boy Candide toured Europe with his teacher whose name in translation was<\/div>\n
\u201cBig Mouth\u201d, a name my students enjoyed.<\/div>\n

4) As a group we were relaxed enough to do give and take\u2026.i.e. join a conversation.<\/div>\n
\u201cWhy did Voltaire put \u2018Big Mouth\u201d in his novel?<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
5) Famous line in the book?  \u201cIf this is the best of all possible worlds, what then of the others?\u201d<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
6) My comment?  Read Candide, you\u2019ll love it because the chapters are only a couple of pages long.<\/div>\n

7) What was my own personal discovery about teaching?  I remember my shock those first few days<\/div>\n
as a teacher\u2026.the students all called me \u201cSir\u201d\u2026.and they did this for my entire testing career.  <\/div>\n
What did \u201csir\u201d mean to me?   It meant the kids respected me.   As a teacher if you are respected then<\/div>\n
all things are possible.   If there is no respect then nothing is possible.<\/div>\n

i.e.  We had a teacher at Parkdale C.I. who just could not get  respect.  One day when I slipped out for a coffee<\/div>\n
I found him sitting on the step of his portable classroom. <\/div>\n
 \u201cWhat\u2019s wrong?<\/div>\n
\u201cThe students have taken control.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cHOW?\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cI was having difficulty with them.\u201d<\/div>\n
(The classroom was full of noise and kids jumping up ad down\u2026and laughing\u2026hooting even)<\/div>\n
\u201cGod awful noise they are making\u2026how did that happen?\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cI lost control and said \u201cWhat do you expect me to do\u2026\u201dstand up, sit down, act like a fool?”<\/div>\n
\u201cThen all hell broke loose\u2026they began jumping  and sitting .jup and down\u2026hooting.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cOdd.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cWorst thing is that they have now locked me out of the portable classroom.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cCall the VP\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cAre you kidding.  he will think I cannot teach\u2026have no respect\u2026.so I will lsit here until the bell goes.\u201d<\/div>\n
(And he did. He was still siting there when I cam back with my coffee.  The hullabaloo was continuing\u2026<\/div>\n
he never got respect and eventually gave up teaching.  Very sad.  Nice guy.)<\/div>\n
