EPISODE 796    EARLY SPRINGTIME ALWAYS TAKES ME TO ANDREW WYETH\u2019S PAINTINGS and THE BIG SNAPPER<\/div>\n

When the frost is gone and snow has disappeared then the dead grass of last year IS<\/div>\n
exposed\u2026light beige\u2026  gives all the land a beautiful but harsh appearance.  But not for long.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
 Andrew Wyeth captured those first moments of springtime.  His painting <\/div>\n
\u2018Christina\u2019s World\u2019 comeS TO mind. (available on internet but under copyright)  ChIrstina Olsen was a severely crippled woman that Wyeth <\/div>\n
noticed dragging herself across the fields of her home farm in Maine.   The painting has intrigued art<\/div>\n
critics and art lovers ever since. <\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
For me.   Wyeth is synonymous with those first light brown days of intensive sunlight when<\/div>\n
April arrives.<\/div>\n

PONDS ARE OPEN ONCE AGAIN\u2026.THE BIG SNAPPER IS RESTLESS<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
Today, I tried to catch the first breath of springtime as the ponds opened  up.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
You may wonder about the turtle.   It is made of cement and was placed<\/div>\n
oN that rock years ago.   Amazed at how many people think it is real.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
 The turtles eyes are permanently closed while Woody takes a bath in the nude.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
Real turtles are just waking up down in the mud below.  One of them is a big  snapping<\/div>\n
turtle whose anger matches his or her curiosity.   How many times have I met the<\/div>\n
snapper on the trail to the back field\u2026.watching me with eyes protruding from that long neck… ready to snap off<\/div>\n
my fingers if I am fool enough to pick him or her up.?\u201d<\/div>\n

\u201cGrandpa, come and sit down.  I have bad news for you.\u201d  said Jack a few years ago.<\/div>\n
\u201cHow bad, Jack?\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cI found  the Big Snapper over by the old barn\u2026he\u2019s dead Grandpa.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cYou know Jack, that Big Snapper has been living in the small pond as longs I can <\/div>\n
remember. He or she lived there long before you were born.  He might have been here <\/div>\n
when my grandparents lived here… could have been 100 years old. We will miss him.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cVery sad,Grandpa.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cBut we will get another. \u201c<\/div>\n
\u201cHow?\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cAround June snappers begin to move about\u2026.cross the Fifth line road\u2026seems we help them cross every year….we will catch<\/div>\n
one and give  him or her a new home.\u201d<\/div>\n

And we did. A big one was crossing the road and I Lifted him into a box with the toe of my boot. Not my hand<\/div>\n
 Not sure of the sex.  Our old snapper may have been a female because<\/div>\n
Andrew found a clutch of baby snappers a while back.  Hatched about time ponds froze<\/div>\n
up so likely did not survive.  Nature can be brutal.<\/div>\n

odd wants to know why those red sticks now coming to life are called DOGWOOD?<\/div>\n
