JACKSON\u2019S AUSTRALIA ADVENTURE \u2014 SPIDERS AND FEMALE MEDICS<\/div>\n

Last year, 2022, Our grandson. Jackson Skeoch, was accepted for Basic Training in the Canadian Army.  Training is no joke.  Physically<\/div>\n
gruelling with sergeants trained to make life as miserable as possible.   Jack thrived.  First achievement we noticed was<\/div>\n
the ability to make his bed with perfect square corners, a skill I have yet to learn.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
Jack arrived home yesterday but the flight was from Australia rather than the home base of the Princess Patricia Light Infantry<\/div>\n
at CFB Shiloh in Manitoba.  What is Jack doing halfway around the world rather than in Canada?    He was chosen as part <\/div>\n
of a 10 man Recon Team competing for honours with teams from other countrys.   Doing what?  Recon training involves<\/div>\n
living rough.<\/div>\n

\u201cWith an air mattress no doubt.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cPossible but most of us did not want to carry that extra weight across<\/div>\n
an Australian desert.\u201d<\/div>\n

\u201cWe had targets \u2014 had to find them noiselessly.\u201d<\/div>\n

among some of them\u2026flat on the ground.\u201d<\/div>\n

\u201cThe guy next to me was awakened by one crawling up his arm\u2026big one.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cHow big?\u201d<\/div>\n

\u201cIf it bites, the venom acts fast\u2026your hands curl up\u2026toes curl\u2026trouble walking\u2026happens<\/div>\n

\u201cNot sure\u2026anti venom needed.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cHow did he get bitten?\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cTried to flick the spider off his shoulder\u2026.fangs got him.\u201d<\/div>\n

\u201cNot so rare grandpa,  Two more of these spiders got on his arm.  We must have been<\/div>\n
sleeping near their funnel webs or holes in the ground like the Trap Door spider\u2026that one live<\/div>\n
for 20 years and is bad tempered..\u2019<\/div>\n
\u2018Were you scared?\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cNo.  More worried our team would miss our target in the dark.\u201d<\/div>\n

“What were your targets?\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cWe never fully knew but had to find them with map references<\/div>\n
and compass.  Carried a loaded pack.  Sweat poued off\u2026.drank more<\/div>\n
water than I ever drank before.  Dangerous  to run out of water.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cWhat would happen if a spider got you?\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cDo you mean in a real situation?\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cYes\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cI do not know.  Maybe we would have some anti-venom.   We had a <\/div>\n
course on emergency treatment for gunshot wounds.  Maybe for spider bites too.<\/div>\n
We had a funny thing happen on that course.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cFunny?\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cYes, we were in town having a beer one week end and noticed two good looking<\/div>\n
girls\u2026on their own\u2026so my buddy and I made a move on them.   Sort of backfired.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cHow?\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cWell, we told the girls we were backpackers\u2026.campers\u2026kept the army out of the move<\/div>\n
because some people are cautious about meeting soldiers.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cGet to kissing?\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cNo\u2026just had a good time talking.  Then went back to camp.   Next morning all he recon crews<\/div>\n
were slated for a lecture from army medics.  We took our seats.. and got a shock\u2026\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cShock?\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cThe two girls were army medics. They walked in the door and looked at us<\/div>\n
and we looked at them.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cMutually shocked.\u201d<\/div>\n

\u201cWe just kept our heads down\u2026they were both officers.\u201d<\/div>\n

Allegedly the world\u2019s most dangerous spider, the Sydney Funnel-Web<\/a> (atrax robustus<\/em>) is a common feature in New South Wales, residing in both back gardens and bushlands. Known for its foul temper and mighty fangs \u2013 which can pierce through finger and toenails alike \u2013 this arachnid<\/a> is not to be messed with.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Other Funnel-Web Spiders<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n

There are approximately 40 other funnel-web spiders \u2013 none as venomous as the dreaded Sydney funnel-web. In fact, only six have been proven to pose a threat to safety.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Two of the most dangerous include the northern tree funnel-web spider (h<\/em>adronyche formidabilis<\/em>) and the southern tree funnel-web spider (hadronyche cerberea<\/em>). Although numerous bites are reported each year, with victims generally residing in Southern Queensland or Northern New South Wales, the anti-venom has proven hugely effective.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
