Europeans marvelled at the clean grain of these behemoths<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">from which they built their houses and cities.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Today there are only 500 Kauri trees surviving &nbsp;in protected reserves. &nbsp; And they are all threatened by an insidious monster.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">It is not human beings that threaten those few surviving trees. &nbsp;T<span style=\"background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" class=\"\"><font color=\"#00304b\" face=\"Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif\" class=\"\"><span style=\"caret-color: rgb(64, 64, 64);\" class=\"\">he incurable and fatal &#8216;kauri dieback disease&#8217; has been detected as a<\/span><\/font><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span style=\"background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" class=\"\"><font color=\"#00304b\" face=\"Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif\" class=\"\"><span style=\"caret-color: rgb(64, 64, 64);\" class=\"\">slow killer of&nbsp;the giants. &nbsp; No&nbsp;cure yet. &nbsp;In an attempt to give scientists time to find a cure, human&nbsp;beings are no longer allowed to<\/span><\/font><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span style=\"background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" class=\"\"><font color=\"#00304b\" face=\"Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif\" class=\"\"><span style=\"caret-color: rgb(64, 64, 64);\" class=\"\">visit the protected forest. &nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cWe can but hope that good will be the final goal of ill<\/span><\/font><\/span><font color=\"#00304b\" face=\"Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif\" class=\"\"><span style=\"caret-color: rgb(64, 64, 64);\" class=\"\">\u201d, as Tennyson wrote and I quote lest you have forgotten.<\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font color=\"#00304b\" face=\"Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif\" class=\"\"><span style=\"caret-color: rgb(64, 64, 64);\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div style=\"margin: 0px; (I think&nbsp;beckon 1980\u2019s) Taken there by distant&nbsp;relatives\u2026.very distant. &nbsp;The Freemans<\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font color=\"#00304b\" face=\"Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif\" class=\"\"><span style=\"caret-color: rgb(64, 64, 64);\" class=\"\">and he Edwards families. &nbsp;Sadly We have lost contact with them due to the distractions of daily life. &nbsp;The only&nbsp;link that remains is this picture<\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font color=\"#00304b\" face=\"Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif\" class=\"\"><span style=\"caret-color: rgb(64, 64, 64);\" class=\"\">and my middle name which is Edwards. &nbsp;They lived (or lived ) in Whangarei, North Island. &nbsp;relatives on my mothers side of the<\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font color=\"#00304b\" face=\"Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif\" class=\"\"><span style=\"caret-color: rgb(64, 64, 64);\" class=\"\">family who&nbsp;migrated from Kington,&nbsp;Herefordshire at some time in the mid 19th&nbsp;century.<\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font color=\"#00304b\" face=\"Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif\" class=\"\"><span style=\"caret-color: rgb(64, 64, 64);\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font color=\"#00304b\" face=\"Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif\" class=\"\"><span style=\"caret-color: rgb(64, 64, 64);\" class=\"\">Mr. Edwards gave me a tiny block of a Kauri tree about the&nbsp;size of a small box of matches. &nbsp;It\u2019s still around&nbsp;here ..somewhere.&#8221;<\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span style=\"background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" class=\"\"><font color=\"#00304b\" face=\"Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif\" class=\"\"><span style=\"caret-color: rgb(64, 64, 64);\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/span><\/font><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span style=\"background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" class=\"\"><font color=\"#00304b\" face=\"Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif\" class=\"\"><span style=\"caret-color: rgb(64, 64, 64);\" class=\"\">read on\u2026the&nbsp;pictures will take your breath away. &nbsp;Perhaps make you cry.<\/span><\/font><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span style=\"background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" class=\"\"><font color=\"#00304b\" face=\"Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif\" class=\"\"><span style=\"caret-color: rgb(64, 64, 64);\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/span><\/font><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span style=\"background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" class=\"\"><font color=\"#00304b\" face=\"Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif\" class=\"\"><span style=\"caret-color: rgb(64, 64, 64);\" class=\"\">alan<\/span><\/font><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"7989E2D8-7038-4D1B-A2B1-1DC3F91AB6F1\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/A7D56149-523A-4ADF-B5F8-9A3C169CD595_1_105_c.jpeg\"><br class=\"\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">MY FAILURE: &nbsp;These are distant relatives of the Freemans and Edwards families. English on my mothers side of the family. &nbsp;They live or lived in Whangarie, North Island, Nw Zeldand.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">The city with a hundred beaches. &nbsp; We visited then in mid 1980\u2019s but lost contact. &nbsp;Like all Kiwis we met they were great hosts<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">and I regret we lost contact. &nbsp; M\u0101ori valued kauri because of its size and for its gum.<br class=\"\"><br class=\"\">Kauri are tall and straight and the giant trees were perfect for building waka, boats and settlers\u2019 homes. The work involved in the logging of the kauri forests was documented by photographers, both professional and amateur. By 1900 most of the kauri forests had been cut down. Only a few patches remained.<br class=\"\"><br class=\"\">In more recent times, the incurable and fatal kauri dieback disease has severly impacted kauri forests. Te Kawerau \u0101 Maki, the tangata whenua (people of the land) of Wait\u0101kere in Auckland, have placed a r\u0101hui over the entire Wait\u0101kere forest (Te Wao Nui o Tiriwa). For the health of the forest, they are asking people to stay away from the bush. There were no cranes or bulldozers, or helicopters. A big traction engine may have been used to haul the log out. This log is almost 11 metres long and 1.2 metres thick and these men are cutting it by hand!<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\">Pit sawing was the simplest way to produce planks for quickly building huts and dams in the bush. It was also a cheap way to make use of a small stand of trees. A long saw with a handle at each end was used, one man above, and one man below.
