IN MEMORIAM:   FAILLA WAS A GRAND DOG\u2026MORE THAN HUMAN\u2026A HEROINE<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
This story was written so her memory will remain as long as we live and breathe<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
This is our big pan where Failla was exploring when she heard Woody\u2019s \u2018Death Cry’<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
Failla ran with the speed of summer lightning down the grass trail to our small pond where Woody was crying.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
THE STORY<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
She was a grand dog.  Loyal, loving and intelligent.  Failla knew Woody was in trouble<\/div>\n
before the rest of us did.  And she acted faster than the rest of us.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
\u201cAlan, come quickly\u2026TROUBLE!\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cWoody has fallen through the ice\u2026.in the centre of the pond.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s crying\u2026knows he is in trouble\u2026.CRYING! \u2026\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cFAILLA has arrived..;racing from back field\u2026heard Woody crying”<\/div>\n
\u201cNow Failla is on the ice\u2026both will drown.\u201d<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
By the time i got there our dog Woody was half submerged trying to<\/div>\n
get back on the ice.  Flailing.  Crying.   But Impossible to reach.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
Then a wonderful thing happened.  Failla acted immediately \u2026. began breaking<\/div>\n
the ice until she had created a water trail for Woody.   She got out on thicker ice<\/div>\n
and circled the hole around Woody.<\/div>\n
Then she actually shepherded him to shore using the open water trail she had made<\/div>\n
for him.  She acted fast\u2026.seemed to know what to do and did it in the twinkling of<\/div>\n
an eye.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
\u201cFailla saved Woody\u2019s life.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cAnd she did it in an instant\u2026she knew what to do!\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cCould the rescue have been accidental\u2026.could both dogs have drowned?\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cI think it was a conscious act\u2026sort of a knowing reflex.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cHardly possible\u2026hard to believe.\u201d<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
\u201cThey are both in the truck now.  Woody is flat out exhausted.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cBut look at Failla\u2026look into her eyes.\u201d<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
\u201cShe knew what she was doing.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cAnd she is proud of it.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cAnd her eyes are saying she would do the same for one of us.\u201d<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
\u201cLook into those eyes!\u201d<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
Note: How did Failla get her name?  Not because she was a \u2018failure\u2019 that\u2019s for sure.<\/div>\n
She was named after a fine wine.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
A SAD DAY FOR ALL OF US:  WE HAVE LOST FAILLA<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
That heroic rescue occurred a few years ago.  Time flies by.  Failla has aged and lately<\/div>\n
has had trouble even getting out of her bed.   <\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
\u201cTIME HAS COME,\u201d said Dr. Jeff Edwards, our veterinarian.  Julie and Andy delayed the<\/div>\n
inevitable as long as possible.  Even longer than possible.  Failla was aware of her failings<\/div>\n
and knew her time had come.   She could no longer walk.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
\u201cI had to carry her from her bed to the truck and then<\/div>\n
into see Dr. Edwards who assured me her death would be<\/div>\n
painless and fast.\u201d<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
\u201cJulie was crying.  I held back my tears but only just able to do that.<\/div>\n
Crying on the inside.\u201d<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
Marjorie and I drove Woody down to Andy\u2019s place later.  Woody nosed<\/div>\n
around here and there looking for Failla.  I think he knew she was gone<\/div>\n
as he sniffed around her empty bed.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
For most of us it is easy to love a dog and difficult to accept the loss<\/div>\n
of one.  Doubly more difficult to lose Failla for she seemed more than a dog.<\/div>\n

Look into Woody’s eyes. (below)<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n

This is Woody. He knows Failla is gone.<\/div>\n
