&nbsp;Are horses part of their beliefs? &nbsp;NOT IN THE LEAST. &nbsp;Horses help keep them away from us\u2026you and me<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">are the problem, &nbsp; We are dangerous\/ &nbsp;As the loom of history proves. &nbsp;We did terrible things to them back in the 16th century. &nbsp;They have not forgotten.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">We may have been forgiven. &nbsp;These Amish people just want to live their lives SEPARATE from us.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><object apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"9E9AA552-C1A9-424F-B27D-62EECFF1C2AC\" class=\"\" data=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/image-0005.jpeg\" type=\"application\/x-apple-msg-attachment\" height=\"640\" width=\"434\" apple-width=\"yes\" apple-height=\"yes\"><\/object><object apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"FF3977C3-ED22-456B-AAB0-6CEB5E07A155\" class=\"\" data=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/image-0003.jpeg\" type=\"application\/x-apple-msg-attachment\" height=\"425\" width=\"640\" apple-width=\"yes\" apple-height=\"yes\"><\/object><object apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"A0B6179C-6085-4CBB-8D37-66438A709B85\" class=\"\" data=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/image-0056.jpeg\" type=\"application\/x-apple-msg-attachment\" height=\"419\" width=\"640\" apple-width=\"yes\" apple-height=\"yes\"><\/object><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Back in the 1990\u2019s we spent several week ends in central Ohio near Zanesville and Norwich.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Helen and George Richie invited us to their annual Farm Show which featured ancient machines<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">and long forgotten rural skills.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Just to get there we passed through countryside dominated by Amish people, (an Anabaptist sect.)<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Their farms were magnificent. &nbsp;Each blade of grass in place. &nbsp;Each animal healthy. Each Amish&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">simply dressed in dark clothing with broad straw hats. &nbsp; Women in long cotton print dresses and black<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">bonnets. &nbsp; The Amish were friendly but at the same time distant. Mysterious to us because we did<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">not know much about them\u2026except that they seemed to want to avoid the trappings of modern society.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">They preferred to use horse rather than tractor. &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><object apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"E45E7C6B-95D4-46EC-9225-E84FD5E26B69\" class=\"\" data=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/7FA48B0D-944F-4465-9CA4-D39C0737DFE2_1_105_c.jpeg\" type=\"application\/x-apple-msg-attachment\" height=\"419\" width=\"640\" apple-width=\"yes\" apple-height=\"yes\"><\/object><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><object apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"467C9C9E-CA47-49E1-9629-F5C6C16A04A4\" class=\"\" data=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/8F4D6382-C88C-4D1B-A37C-C5FD31FEFBD2_1_105_c.jpeg\" type=\"application\/x-apple-msg-attachment\" height=\"416\" width=\"640\" apple-width=\"yes\" apple-height=\"yes\"><\/object><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">On one farm I noticed a fairly modern hay bailing machine being pulledby horses\u2026maybe a three&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">horse hitch of lake Clydesdles. &nbsp; This machine was made to be pulled by a tractor not by horses.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Then we began to see more and more horse drawn machines. &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Was the horse part of Amish religion? &nbsp; What was the Amish reiigion ? What did these people believe?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Why were they so \u2019stand offish\u2019? &nbsp; Friendly to a point. &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">The Amish cannot be easily understood. &nbsp; Their history began deep in the 16th century when Europe was<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">undergoing religious reassessments triggered by Martin Luther and Ulrich Zwingli. &nbsp; &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Infant baptism was one of the central issues. &nbsp;Europeans , most of them, believed in infant baptism.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">What is baptism?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&#8216;<span style=\"caret-color: rgb(77, 81, 86); color: rgb(77, 81, 86); font-family: arial, sans-serif; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" class=\"\">A public declaration:&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; color: rgb(95, 99, 104); font-family: arial, sans-serif;\" class=\"\">Baptism declares that you are a follower of Jesus Christ<\/span><span style=\"caret-color: rgb(77, 81, 86); color: rgb(77, 81, 86); font-family: arial, sans-serif; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" class=\"\">. It is a public confession of your faith in, and commitment to, Jesus Christ.&#8217;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">So most Christians get their children baptised as soon as possible. &nbsp; But not all do this infant baptizing. &nbsp;In the 1520\u2019s,, a long long time<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">ago, an offshoot of the Protestant Reformation was adult baptism. &nbsp;Infant baptism was questioned. &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp; the issue of baptism a threat to most Europeans whether Protestant or Catholic. &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Best to stamp out the new religious concept of adult baptism. &nbsp;Right? &nbsp; How could Anabatism be stopped? &nbsp;By removing the Anabaptists<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">seemed the right answer. &nbsp; So Anabaptists were driven underground. &nbsp;Secret meetings in private homes rather than big curch<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">buildings. &nbsp;If caught the treatment was ruthless. &nbsp;More than 1500 were killed. Anabaptist males wee burned to death . &nbsp;Women were drowned.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Adult baptism seemed sensible to me. &nbsp;Maybe because I was not baptised as an infant. &nbsp; My brother was baptised as an infant.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Why not me? &nbsp;Why Eric and not Alan? &nbsp;Simple explanation was that dad did not have time for baptism. &nbsp; He had horse races to attend.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Bets to place Wiin,Place or Show. &nbsp;No time for baptism or church for that matter. &nbsp;He just did not think baptism was important even if<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">I should be daned to a place like Purgatory for my eternal life.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">So I eventually got baptised as an 18 year od adult. &nbsp; Thought about it, &nbsp;Thought about a lot of religious beliefs that did not make<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">much sense. &nbsp;I think the minister that baptised me would have preferred that I was an infant.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">PACIFISM<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><object crossorigin=\"anonymous\" class=\"mw-mmv-final-image jpg\" alt=\"An etching of a man leaning down to reach another man who has fallen through broken ice. No one knows for sure. What is certain is that at least 1,500 were cruelly tortured and killed. For the most part these were peaceful citizens who did not believe in war and who became the forerunners of today&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianity.com\/church\/denominations\/10-things-everyone-should-know-about-mennonites-and-their-beliefs.html\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; color: blue; font-weight: 600; background-position: 0px 0px;\" class=\"\">Mennonites<\/a>and Amish. The main complaint of the authorities against them was that they did not believe infant baptism had any value. They chose to be re-baptized as willing adults.<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 5px 0px 0px; padding: 10px 0px; line-height: 1.5;\" class=\"\">Although no other charges were proven against them, they were sentenced to death. For the men death was usually by fire; for women it was by drowning. Many Anabaptists proved to be so bold in their final testimony for Christ that authorities began to clamp their tongues before leading them out to their execution so that they could not speak up and win more converts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 5px 0px 0px; padding: 10px 0px; line-height: 1.5;\" class=\"\">One of the Anabaptists who died in flames was Dirk Willem. His story is particularly touching, because he forfeited a real chance to escape when he turned back to help one of his pursuers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 5px 0px 0px; padding: 10px 0px; line-height: 1.5;\" class=\"\">Dirk was captured and imprisoned in his home town of Asperen in the Netherlands. Knowing that his fate would be death if he remained in prison, Dirk made a rope of strips of cloth and slid down it over the prison wall. A guard chased him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 5px 0px 0px; padding: 10px 0px; line-height: 1.5;\" class=\"\">Frost had covered a nearby pond with a thin layer of ice. Dirk risked a dash across it. He made it to safety, but the ice broke under his pursuer who cried for help. Dirk believed the Scripture that a man should help his enemies. He immediately turned back and pulled the floundering man from the frigid water.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-250 mobile-ad-container advertisement clear ad advertisement-300x250 text-center\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 5px auto 15px; padding: 0px; text-align: center; clear: both; min-height: 250px; width: 300px;\">\n<div id=\"desktop_middle_300x250-1\" data-google-query-id=\"COrtt_uh5PwCFW2WAAAdnpoK0A\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\" class=\"\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_6177\/christianity.com\/church\/church-history\/timeline\/1501-1600\/desktop_middle_300x250-1_0__container__\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0pt none;\" class=\"\">In gratitude for his life, the man would have let Dirk escape, but a Burgomaster (chief magistrate) standing on the shore sternly ordered him to arrest Dirk and bring him back, reminding him of the oath he had sworn as an officer of the peace.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 5px 0px 0px; padding: 10px 0px; line-height: 1.5;\" class=\"\">Back to prison went Dirk. He was condemned to death for being re-baptized, allowing secret church services in his home and letting others be baptized there. The record of his sentencing concludes: &#8220;all of which is contrary to our holy Christian faith, and to the decrees of his royal majesty, and ought not to be tolerated, but severely punished, for an example to others; therefore, we the aforesaid judges, having, with mature deliberation of council, examined and considered all that was to be considered in this matter, have condemned and do condemn by these presents in the name; and in the behalf, of his royal majesty, as Count of Holland, the aforesaid Dirk Willems, prisoner, persisting obstinately in his opinion, that he shall be executed with fire, until death ensues; and declare all his property confiscated, for the benefit of his royal majesty.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"templatequotecite\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; line-height: 1.5em; padding-left: 1.6em; margin-top: 0px;\"><font face=\"Times\" size=\"5\" class=\"\"><span style=\"font-style: normal;\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"templatequotecite\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; line-height: 1.5em; padding-left: 1.6em; margin-top: 0px;\">\n<h4 class=\"subhead\" style=\"margin: 0px 0px 15px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; line-height: 1.2; font-family: \"Chronicle Display A\", \"Chronicle Display B\", serif !important; background-position: 0px 0px;\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">The cost of being different<\/font><\/h4>\n<p class=\"text\" style=\"margin: 0px 0px 25px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; line-height: 1.7; font-family: \"Chronicle SSm A\", \"Chronicle SSm B\", serif; background-position: 0px 0px;\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Although martyrdom had largely ceased by the end of the 16th century, descendants of the Anabaptists continued to experience other forms of persecution. Mennonites in the Netherlands, for example, could not proselytize and were forced to meet in &#8220;hidden&#8221; churches. In the territories of southwest Germany, Mennonites had to pay a special &#8220;recognition tax,&#8221; they could not enter the professions, and they generally could not own property. And the Brethren met with hostility from state church authorities from their beginnings in 1708.&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"text\" style=\"margin: 0px 0px 25px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; line-height: 1.7; font-family: \"Chronicle SSm A\", \"Chronicle SSm B\", serif; background-position: 0px 0px;\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">This situation changed dramatically in the course of the 18th and 19th centuries as waves of Mennonites, Amish, and Brethren began to migrate to the United States and Canada. Lured by the promise of cheap land, economic opportunities, and religious freedoms, descendants of the Anabaptists gradually established flourishing communities. Here they were free to build their own meetinghouses and to practice their faith on the same footing as their Catholic, Lutheran, and Reformed neighbors.&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"text\" style=\"margin: 0px 0px 25px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; line-height: 1.7; font-family: \"Chronicle SSm A\", \"Chronicle SSm B\", serif; background-position: 0px 0px;\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">No longer persecuted by a hostile world, Anabaptist groups in America were now challenged to define the boundaries between the church and world in a more self-conscious way. Although not all groups agreed on precisely where those boundaries should be drawn, several themes emerged. Most Mennonite, Amish, and Brethren groups, for example, emphasized the virtue of Christian humility\u2014expressed in simple speech, reticence to self-promote, and reluctance to define Christian faith in the sharp-edged language of doctrinal orthodoxy.&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"text\" style=\"margin: 0px 0px 25px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; line-height: 1.7; font-family: \"Chronicle SSm A\", \"Chronicle SSm B\", serif; background-position: 0px 0px;\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Most groups also developed standards of dress\u2014emphasizing simplicity, modesty, and uniformity\u2014as a way of reinforcing the boundaries of group identity. Over time, the Amish maintained these visible markers of nonconformity more rigorously than did the Mennonites and Brethren. But all three groups struggled throughout the 19th and 20th centuries to retain a clear sense of separation from the world.&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"templatequotecite\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; line-height: 1.5em; padding-left: 1.6em; margin-top: 0px;\">\n<p class=\"text\" style=\"margin: 0px 0px 25px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; line-height: 1.7; background-position: 0px 0px;\"><font face=\"Times\" size=\"5\" class=\"\"><span style=\"font-style: normal;\" class=\"\">The principle of nonconformity has been tested most sharply during times of war.
