At least not so in 1961<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" jsaction=\"load:XAeZkd;\" jsname=\"HiaYvf\" class=\"n3VNCb KAlRDb\" alt=\"YUKON Travel Guide\" data-noaft=\"1\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"518AD879-0B61-4DAA-B08B-B3B44BA87E7B\" style=\"margin: 0px;\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/img_6352.jpg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Stewart Crossing was a postage stamp sized place. &nbsp;Empty. &nbsp;A wilderness bust stop.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">I AM SITTING in front of my coputer trying to decide whether this actually happened. Maybe I invented<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the story\u2026or exaggerated the story. &nbsp;It has been more than 70 years since I stole that public bus<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">on that cold Yukon night. &nbsp; Did it really happen? &nbsp;Have I been telling a lie for decades. &nbsp;A big lie,<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">like ex President Donald Trump I have told the lie so many times to so many&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">people that I may have come to believe the lie myself.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cOn my last nigh in &nbsp;Mayo Landing in the tiny hours of &nbsp;September 13, 1962, I stole a public bus<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">and drove it \u2026along with passengers \u2026.from Mayo to Stewart Crossing.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Yes,, it happened &nbsp;and is recorded in my Diary. &nbsp; Just one short sentence. &nbsp;\u201cI took the May bus with&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">passengers and drove to Stewart Crossing. &nbsp;Had do it.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">So my memory has served me well and this is my chance to unload the events of that evening.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">My last evening in Mayo Landing was spent drinking beer with my mining friends. &nbsp; Miners are nomadic.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">They meet for a short time\u2026get to know each other\u2026have a &nbsp;few beers together. &nbsp;Then, if they are lucky<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">they have job for a few months or years until the ore runs out and they have to look for another<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">pace to hand their hats. &nbsp; Nomads. &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">And this is more true for geophysical prospectors. &nbsp;Jobs last a few weeks or occasionally<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">for a whole summer like our Yukon job. &nbsp;When the work is over the men take off for parts unknown\u2026<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">a kind of diaspora. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">We celebrated our friendship that bitter Yukon night. &nbsp;Sept. 12, 1961. &nbsp;Not a crybaby kind of evening. &nbsp;Just last&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">meeting of people we would never see again. &nbsp;Bill was there and Peter the Biblical scholar and Gilroy<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the staker\u2026.and Moses Lord representing the native population. &nbsp;Most of them would get very drunk.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">I faked it a bit. &nbsp;Only drank a few.,, &nbsp;felt safe doing so for I could sleep on the bus ride<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">to Stewart Crossing.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">The bus was supposed to leave at 1 a.m. or &nbsp;thereabouts. &nbsp; So at 12.30 I shook hands wirh<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the boys whose ages ranged from 21 to 61 or older. &nbsp;We had shared a lot of adventures some<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">of which were &nbsp;recounted in an earlier episode. We had lived and worked rough. &nbsp; We would<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">never see each other again. &nbsp; And we know it.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cWhere the hell is the bus?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cLooks to be &nbsp;a bit late.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">There were five or six of us waiting in the darkness for the bus. &nbsp;But the bus never&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">came.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cHappens all the time, the driver is sleeping it off at home. &nbsp;May not show up\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cBut I have to be in Stewart Crossing by 6 a.m.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cYou can try to wake him. &nbsp;His cabin is not far. &nbsp;You\u2019ll see the bus.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cGot to wake him up &nbsp;Will he be drunk?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cHard to say.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cI\u2019ll go get him.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cCareful of his dogs mind you.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cDogs?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cHe has a few huskies \u2026 dog team kind. &nbsp;Might not take<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">kindly to a stranger like you\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">If I &nbsp;missed the bus coming down from Dawson City to Whitehorse then<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">my elaborate plant would collapse. &nbsp;And I did not know what I would<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">do. &nbsp;pay for a fight from May to Toronto?\u2026.with a whole bunch of flight<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">connections. &nbsp;Would cost a fortune. &nbsp;Worse would be the crashing of my big<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">plan. &nbsp; I really wanted to find Dead Horse Gulch, the Childoot Pass, Lake<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Bennet , Skagway , the ghostly Treadwell Mine, and the<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">landlocked mysterious city of Juneau where the Tlingit people once lived. &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cIf the driver does not wake up and the dogs scare the shit out of you, there is<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">another &nbsp;way.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cTake the bus.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cI can\u2019t drive a bus\u2026.and certainly don\u2019t want to steal one anyway.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cHappens all the time\u2026\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cWhat happens?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cA passenger takes the bus. &nbsp;Keys are in the ignition.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Crisis. &nbsp;What to do? &nbsp;Seemed a bit off the wall to try and take the bus. &nbsp;But if I did not do that<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">then all my plans would fall flat. &nbsp; &nbsp;I remember tentatively entering the bus. &nbsp;Door was open<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">as if I was expected. &nbsp;Long metal arm did the opening and closing. &nbsp;I pulled the arm and&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the door closed. &nbsp;Key was in ignition and when turned the motor rumbled into life. &nbsp; But no<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">sign the rumble awakened the driver.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">I cannot remember whether it was stick shift or automatic. &nbsp;Seems to me there was a floor<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">shift which I slipped into first gear and the bus was on the move. &nbsp;At the Mayo Hotel I stopped.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">May as well take the passengers with me &nbsp;Five or six of them. &nbsp;Local indigenous relatives of<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Moses Loord no doubt. &nbsp;They did not bat an eye. &nbsp;Flopped into seats as if this was a normal<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">situation.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">The thought of insurance risk popped into my head. &nbsp;Was i risking the lives of these people.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">The thought popped out just as fast. &nbsp;I had other things to consider. &nbsp;Like lights. &nbsp;Road gear.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Pitch black highway. &nbsp;I took it slow. &nbsp;Only 33 miles to Stewart Crossing . &nbsp;Lots of time as the Dawson<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">southbound bus was not expected until dawn. &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">What can go wrong? Gas! &nbsp;Was the bus gassed cup. &nbsp;Seemed so. &nbsp;I got more confident as the&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">miles rolled by. &nbsp;Traffic in the early hours of Sept. 13 was nil. &nbsp;All I had &nbsp;to do was keep the moving<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">and scan he road for moose. &nbsp; &nbsp;Did I have high or low beams? &nbsp;No idea and not much chance<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">to check. &nbsp; Confidence increased.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Was the road gravel or tarmac? &nbsp;Try to keep to centre. &nbsp;Test brakes gingerly but keep moving.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">What if I stopped and could not start again? &nbsp;Keep cool.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" jsaction=\"load:XAeZkd;\" jsname=\"HiaYvf\" class=\"n3VNCb KAlRDb\" alt=\"YUKON Travel Guide\" data-noaft=\"1\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"FE0E6F7D-E4BA-4D4F-88F7-461FCD3DB8E1\" style=\"margin: 0px;\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/2008-Chetwynd-Cassiar-Highway-043.jpg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Population of Stewart Crossing is ten. &nbsp;Ten people with most of those ten living<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">in lonely cabins hidden away in the wilderness.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">We reached Stewart Crossing and rolled to stop on the gravel. &nbsp;I had expected &nbsp;A small village.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">instead I found about the loneliest place on earth. &nbsp;One tiny white wood clad place with a sign&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">reminding &nbsp;drivers this was the last place to get gas before Dawson City one way and Whiteouse<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the other.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Not open. &nbsp;So we sat in the bus until the Dawson us rolled to stop at 6 a..M<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">And that was the end of Mayo Landing adventure &nbsp;and the beginning of another.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">When I write these episodes I try to be self-deprecating. &nbsp;No one wants to read a puffed up ego. &nbsp;I doubt there would be many<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">readers of that kind of episode.
