\u201cAndrew pulled another stunt today at the supermarket ,\u201d wrote Marjorie way back in 1978<\/div>\n
which we will call the Gumball caper.  Let me try to put the story in the first person.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
\u201cGumball machine over there.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cTrust the supermarket to do that.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cMom?\u201d…\u201dGumball?”<\/div>\n
\u201cNo, Shopping fast today.\u201d<\/div>\n
(long pause while Marjorie shopped)<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
\u201cWhere is Andrew?\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cI called but he didn\u2019t come\u2026.where is he?\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cNotice the crowd over there at the entrance\u2026.hope not Andrew in centre.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cHe is\u2026got his hand stuck in the gumboil machine\u2026\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cDidn\u2019t put a quarter in\u2026.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cGot his hand wedged up the gumball slot.  Trying to reach the gumballs.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cAndrew?\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cHand got caught, Mom..still caught\u2026these people are trying to help.\u201d<\/div>\n
(about ten people gathered around.)<\/div>\n
\u201cDoes it hurt?\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cSort of  hurts\u201d<\/div>\n

the size of the slot would be to a Guball thief.   Never ever seen such a gumboil machine.<\/div>\n

\u201cGet the manager, Alan\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cManager is away trying to phone the vending machine people.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cYaaa!  This hurts, mom.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cI know.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cTell Kevin (brother) to stop laughing at me, mom\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cHere comes the manager with a screw driver.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cTwisting\u2026smashing the gumball machine\u2026.only way to get his hand out.\u201d<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
People gathered around.  Most of them smiling. A few, however, were concerned about Andrew.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
\u201cThere!  Got his hand out at least.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cStill part of the machine around his wrist.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cLike a bracelet.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cMore like a handcuff.\u201d<\/div>\n

\u201cJust one simple question, Andrew.\u201d<\/div>\n
:What, dad?\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cDid you manage to get a gumboil?<\/div>\n
