&nbsp;That is the site of the Pebble Mine. &nbsp;We worked&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">somewhere in the centre in 1959;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"0D83F483-3FE1-4C5F-89B6-1BD0D620D63D\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/cfiles58781.jpg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">If you eat canned salmon, odds are it came from Bristol Bay, Alaska.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"D277512E-D265-4042-A3B0-3CAFE48A6C04\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/BCECB004-EDE6-4636-86EB-BD96B654E3D7_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Sockeye salmon\u2026.milions of them\u2026startled us. &nbsp;We came looking for mineralization.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">we did not know that sockeye<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">salmon from Bristol Bay, Alaska. are highly valued &nbsp;They provide 47% of the wild salmon<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">fishing industry in the world. &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cBetween 1990 and 2010, the annual average inshore run of sockeye salmon<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Was appoximately 37, 500,000 fish.\u201d (Sept. 9,2021). &nbsp; Oher studies say 70 million.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" jsaction=\"load:XAeZkd;\" jsname=\"HiaYvf\" class=\"n3VNCb\" alt=\"Sockeye salmon | U.S. Geological Survey\" data-noaft=\"1\" style=\"margin: 0px;\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"0A04B414-A452-40AE-9FC9-BB3A8A698C55\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/5-Sockeye-salmon.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" jsaction=\"load:XAeZkd;\" jsname=\"HiaYvf\" class=\"n3VNCb\" alt=\"Wildlife Preservation | The Conservation Fund\" data-noaft=\"1\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"8E1F57FD-B11F-4334-A4BA-0A5AE02608EC\" style=\"margin: 18.94999999999999px 0px;\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/alaska-sockeye-salmon-Olga-N-Vasik-istock-390x260-1.jpg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"DDA06941-15E4-4F1B-8B9E-A00CE3AD2CBA\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/6739B37F-26C1-4558-9578-940387AE499F_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">We did not know that. &nbsp; This was a mining job; &nbsp;We did not even &nbsp;know that the&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">river below our campsite was loaded with huge creatures working their way<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">eastward to their prime spawning ground. &nbsp;Sometimes they virtually walked up<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the river with their backs in the air where he water was shallow.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Bristol Bay, bounded on the south by the Aleutian Island chain, contains the<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">largest commercial salmon fishery in the world. &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp;&nbsp;We were<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">searching for gold and copper. no one mentioned \u2019sockeye salmon\u2019 to us. &nbsp;Only Bill Morrison brought<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">a fishing rod and he was a sport fisherman looking for trout because they put<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">up such a fight.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"C803EE6F-E1C1-488F-AE2F-775B6C0FA786\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/9A55748C-41AB-4124-A9B2-F105CEC12189_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Look closely\u2026that\u2019s Bill ..a speck of red.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp;When Bill slipped down to the river he was astounded. &nbsp; The river seemed<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">full of bright red fish\u2026all moving determinedly to the river headwaters.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Today the estimate is that 71.2 million sockeye salmon will return to Brisol Bay<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">(Nov 16, 2021)<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Why so many? &nbsp;British Columbia salmon runs are diminishing year by year.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Why is Alaska\u2019s Bristol Bay watershed loaded with millions and millions of salmon.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 1rem; font-family: cordale, serif; color: rgb(62, 60, 57); line-height: 27px; clear: both; overflow-wrap: break-word;\">&#8220;Alannah Hurley, executive director of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.utbb.org\/\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; color: rgb(255, 68, 56); text-decoration: none;\" class=\"\">United Tribes of Bristol Bay<\/a>, a consortium working to protect the traditional Yup\u2019ik, Dena\u2019ina, and Alutiiq ways of life in southwest Alaska, calls Bristol Bay a \u201csalmon powerhouse.\u201d There are many reasons for Bristol Bay\u2019s bounty of salmon stocks. But chief among them is the robust health of the bay\u2019s mountainous watershed, which remains untouched by industrial development. \u201cThere are no dams, there are no mines,\u201d Hurley says in a telephone interview. \u201cThis is as pristine as it gets.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&#8220;THERE ARE NO MINES\u2026THIS IS AS PRISTINE AS IT GETS\u201d &nbsp;(Alanah Hurley, United Tribes of Bristol Bay)<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">In 1959 we were the thin edge of a wedge that would change Bristol Bay. &nbsp;The toxic waste<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">of the mini industry tends to eliminate the word \u2018pristine\u2019 from vocabularies.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Of course we did not know that. &nbsp;We did not know that the stage was being set for a momentous<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">battle that would last 60 years. &nbsp;A battle between the people dependent on Sockeye salmon<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">and the Pebble Mine. &nbsp; Both could not coexist.
