Seemed a loss that we could help relieve. &nbsp;So began our Lobster Trap Rescue<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"D70C479F-8675-4D67-B9F2-C13A8E6DF03A\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/5A4CED37-F9CD-4DBF-8EB5-97170539DAE2_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Our fishing had not been too successful using fishing rods. &nbsp;Great schools of capelin rolled onto<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the eastern beaches of Newfoundland not &nbsp;far from, St. John\u2019s.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp; Then we cut straight across the<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">island to the western beaches along the Strait of Belle Isle where a big surprise awaited us.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Really big. &nbsp;Terrifyingly big<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cWould your boys like to go whale watching here?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">said the first person we met on the banks of the Strait of Belle Isle.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"F6B6DCDD-17FF-4CB5-82F4-E6443C1B2F20\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/7F3F630E-A096-42AC-AD4A-BE24E3B37FC1_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">We were on the long road to L\u2019Anse aux Meadows. &nbsp;Just taking our time as the road was delightfully<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">wild and the Strait of Belle Isle was easy to access as we coddled along. &nbsp;Two adults, two kids, two dogs,<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">three bicycles, two lobster traps, one pop up camper, one well used Ford van\u2026and all the other stuff<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">needed for a cross Canada summer trip living as close to the land as possible.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">In earlier episodes I described the capelin roll and also our rescue of some lost lobster traps that we decided to<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">return to the owners\u2026see picture above. &nbsp; Note Marjorie is still wearing her bikini. &nbsp;The year was circa 1980 (mistake<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">in episode 573 where I said 1970)<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"66FAF4AD-DB9F-4C58-9DF1-3CF69350556B\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/686A0FD9-93C0-498B-9D80-C4C0F262BB35_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">From our campsite we could see a small Newfoundland village &nbsp;of less than a dozen buildings &nbsp;with open rowboats<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">bobbing in a rock enclosed harbour. &nbsp;An easy walk carrying a perfect hand made lobster trap. &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp;\u201cBrought back<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">this trap that you must have lost.\u201d &nbsp;Expected thanks but just to an indifferent shrug. &nbsp; \u201cGovernment pays for the<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">losses\u2026nn need to rescue them.\u201d &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">I know that sounded hostile but it was not. &nbsp;Just a statement of the facts by a young fisherman<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">who was really quite friendly. &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cWould your boys like to go whale watching?&#8221;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\">\u201cWe would love to do that, dad\u2026Can we?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cSuppose so\u2026\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"D0E328E4-B505-4FEC-BC87-9C4466153FA5\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/281C1019-EA37-4A0D-94A9-B19F400C53A5_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cI will get the motor gassed up\u2026you can wade through the water<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">to the boat\u2026only waste deep.\u201d, he said while i was trying to translate<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the message on his T shirt which seemed to say \u201cHard work can&#8217;t<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp;hurt Yah BUT I\u2019m not taking any chances.\u201d &nbsp;This was a young man<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">with a sense of humour. &nbsp;Too bad I have forgotten his name\u2026and the<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">name of the village. &nbsp;Maybe I could find the place from the satellite but<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">no time. &nbsp; &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"EB78AC1C-011D-4FA1-A949-211CB7A07FF3\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/DDF832BB-AEB7-4CE8-83A4-1082E98B0F35_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"527BEC26-AD24-4B46-87D8-4EE985129127\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/CCECF0DA-2C36-4AD4-8E0F-962872F866DD_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"7800D6D3-2A77-4FAE-89F8-29B303079FB8\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/3855CD7D-2E33-4F8A-AA80-3A6D909D13D2_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">THEN THE REAL ADVENTURE BEGAN<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">We were not too far offshore when the first whale appeared\u2026maybe two whales or more.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Could have been a Minki whale or perhaps a pod of dolphins.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">One thing for sure. &nbsp;As we proceeded the whales ran under our boat\u2026just barely.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cDo the whales know we are here?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cSure\u2026they have eyes and ears\u2026better than ours.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Up to this point Andrew and Kevin were leaning over the rim of<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the boat. &nbsp;Once a whale slipped by about 10 feet from us\u2026and parallel&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">to us. &nbsp;Andrew hit the bottom of our boat . &nbsp;Full body slam.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"6B89C7ED-D88E-4EBB-875E-07492E26CFE1\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/4E431A8C-63CD-4242-AE4C-1FD11B605692_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Those dark blurs are part of whatever pod of whales or dolphins were playing with us.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cThis is their playground\u2026not ours.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cIs there a chance they will lift our boat ?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cNot likely.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">(which meant it was possible)<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cThese creatures are longer than our boat.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cWhales. &nbsp;What would you expect.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"6480D138-A502-47EB-9946-01BF20EAFCD9\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1BAA9619-674B-47F9-96A7-EDE390EF5A9F_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Then something really big surfaced. &nbsp;Too close for comfort. &nbsp; Looked like a Humpback whale fin splashing.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Really big whatever it was. &nbsp; We began to see whales where no whales existed. &nbsp;The dark blue patches<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">of the Strait of Belle Isle water looked like whales. &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Andrew did not see them because he stayed on the boat below eye level. &nbsp;Unusual for him.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"93DF1780-0899-4DE2-AF2E-50D6DC930937\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/EF2A3162-F716-4CE5-A025-93554E3E883A_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">This whale \u2026 only got part of him \u2026slipped by so close that it seemed touchable<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">All of us were worried.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cWhat happens if a whale lifts our boat\u2026dumps us. &nbsp;We have no life jackets.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cLife jackets are no use here.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cYou must be kidding.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cWater is so cold we could never reach shore\u2026Hypothermia would get us.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cBloody dangerous.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cNot really. &nbsp;The whales are just curious. &nbsp; No evil intent. &nbsp;Sometimes I think<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">they even know who I am.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" jsaction=\"load:XAeZkd;\" jsname=\"HiaYvf\" class=\"n3VNCb\" alt=\"Blue Whales, Fin Whales, Humpbacks... All at Once! - Baleines en direct\" data-noaft=\"1\" style=\"margin: 0px;\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"365B2301-21B1-48F6-AD2D-FD929EA47A70\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/bmu-BPJ050803_1027-grm.jpg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">I did not take these last two whale &nbsp;pictures. &nbsp;A pair of humpback whales. &nbsp;Get the size of them\u2026more than twice the size of our boat;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.environment.nsw.gov.au\/-\/media\/OEH\/Corporate-Site\/Topics\/Animals-and-plants\/Threatened-species\/Animals\/Mammals\/humpback-whale-megaptera-novaeangliae-breaching-oehflickr.jpg\" jsaction=\"load:XAeZkd;\" jsname=\"HiaYvf\" class=\"n3VNCb\" alt=\"Whales underway again-but don't get too close | NSW Environment and Heritage\" data-noaft=\"1\" style=\"width: 587px; height: 493.4202898550725px; margin: 0px;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Just imagine if these two humpbacks decided to show off beside our boat.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">If they did we would all join Andrew flat out on the bottom of the boat. &nbsp;Or, worse,<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">at the bottom of the Strait of Belle Isle.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Why did I not take more pictures? &nbsp;I needed to grip the gunwales of the boat &nbsp;with both hands.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">why are the sides called gunwales anyway. &nbsp;I hope the whales do not hear that word.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">They might get angry. &nbsp;Why? &nbsp;The word \u2018gun\u2019 spliced onto the word \u2018wales\u2019&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">sounds bloody unfriendly. &nbsp;I read Moby Dick long ago. &nbsp;Scared me back then.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Close up whale watching in an overgrown rowboat is not advisable.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">But the young fisherman was a great example of Newfoundland friendliness.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">alan skeoch<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">april 2022<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">post script: &nbsp; The Strait of Belle Isle is a perfect whale watching site as it forms a<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">natural pathway from the mouth of the St. Lawrence to the cool Arctic waters.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Why would whales want to use this chute?
