(EDIBLE APPARENTLY\u2026NEED CLOTHESPEGS THOUGH)\u2026a newfoundlandf ish story<\/p>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">alan skeoch<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">april 2022<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cWhen can we go fishing\u2026tired of sitting in the truck mile after mile.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cSoon.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cHow about right now, Dad?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cProbably not catch much but let\u2019s pull into this ocean cove\u2026.scenic if nothing else.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cGreat\u2026getting out the fish rods.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">We were camping in Newfoundland when, by pure chance, we came upon a&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u2018capelin roll\u2019. &nbsp;These tiny sardine sized Atlantic Ocean fish play a deadly mating game<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">each where thousands and thousands \u201croll\u201d onto Newfoundland beaches&#8230; a small<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">percentage are gathered up and hung to dry with clothespins by local people and<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">even some tourists like us. &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Humans are not the only predators feasting on capelin. &nbsp;\u201cIt\u2019s the humpback whales that drive the<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">capelin on to our beaches. &nbsp;They are &nbsp;out there beyond the breakers feeding on the<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">little fish.\u201d &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"B3CC205D-678C-40EB-BDD1-3BA361524816\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/E8D7A84F-AB3E-4FBF-8D88-D9D1BDD36947_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"115907D5-077B-4BF6-8EA6-C5CB37F07F71\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/E3FEA968-439F-48FB-AB40-607E4E39E545_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Newfoundland beach, north of St. John\u2019s, where Andrew and Kevin Skeoch were determined to go fishing. &nbsp;If you look<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">closely you can see the boys. &nbsp; Most have ben about 1970 wen we took the boys to experience life in eastern Canada.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"8C93DD76-1424-4AE8-B0D4-FD21CAD3CE52\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1CC8C936-6E3A-4AA1-8E6E-5EED2669CBFB_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">This is Daisy with a capelin in her mouth. You\u2019ll see all manner of nets, including a cast net or dip net, as well as buckets. Many people come to simply enjoy the sight, watching kids, and adults alike shriek as they capture the wriggling creatures in their hands. The more adventurous will don their rubber boots, and wade into the shallow ocean waters to use their nets (some more successfully than others!). The more patient cast their fishing lines out to the capelin retreating from the shoreline. The festival atmosphere at these local beaches is akin to a pop-up, as family and friends gather with plenty of campfires, beach blankets, and picnic coolers. Who knows, you may even see whales lunge feeding on these delicious capelin just offshore.&nbsp;<\/span><br style=\"box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(103, 103, 103); color: rgb(103, 103, 103); font-family: myriad-pro, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 17.33333396911621px;\" class=\"\"><br style=\"box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(103, 103, 103); color: rgb(103, 103, 103); font-family: myriad-pro, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 17.33333396911621px;\" class=\"\"><span style=\"caret-color: rgb(103, 103, 103); color: rgb(103, 103, 103); font-family: myriad-pro, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 17.33333396911621px;\" class=\"\">And this small, slender fish is actually much healthier and tastier than you may think, although it may never become one of your favorite foods. The locals each have their own way to prepare them, from frying, to roasting over an open campfire, to pickling, along with the traditional method of salting and drying the fish. The fact that there are 30 different coves across the province named for capelin indicates the widespread fascination with the annual tradition. To stay up to date on capelin locations, visit&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecapelin.ca\/\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; color: rgb(65, 120, 165);\" class=\"\">www.ecapelin.ca<\/a>.
