5) REACH  BEYOND THE CLASSROOM INTO BROADER COMMUNITY

Members of  OHASSTA, publishers, student teachers, ladies and gentlemen

I consider it a great honour to have this  award  given in my name annually to a  classroom
teacher whose  contribution to education has  been remarkable.  

What makes  a  remarkable teacher?

Off the top I would put each of you in that category because you are willing
to reach  beyond the classroom to the wider  world of  education\u2026that\u2019s why
you are here at OHASSTA\u2026you are  perpetual  learners \u2026 improvers\u2026interested
in others ideas\u2026prepared to share  your ideas.  Remarkable.

Nathan  Tidridge, this year 2018 is you\u2026How  do I know?  Because for
the last half  century\u202648 years I have sat among you\u2026joined  your tables\u2026
shared  your joys and  your failures\u2026noticed  things that make you remarkable

-Remarkable teachers  are respected\u2026first and  foremost\u2026without that respect Remarkability fizzles.
-Remarkable teachers remember names\u2026memorize names  of their students from the get go
-Remarkable teachers can  control their classrooms\u2026clear objectives
-Remarkable teachers never humiliate their students
-Remarkable teachers  have thick skins\u2026not all teaching goes  smoothly\u2026sometimes a  student might
tell a teacher to Go to Hell\u2026that is a  real  teaching moment\u2026remarkable teachers  know that.
-Remarkable teachers recognize distress in certain  students\u2026and provide help\u2026or get help.
-Remarkable teachers laugh a  lot\u2026and can laugh at themselves
-Remarkable teachers are positive people;e
-RemarKalbe teachers respect social distance\u2026they are called  Sir,  Miss, or Mr\u2026not Joe, John or Judy
-Remarkable teachers enjoy rather than fear parents  nights
-Remarkable teachers want their students  to achieve\u2026to be elevated
-Remarkable teachers know what they are doing\u2026the lessons are going somewhere\u2026coherent
-Remarkable teachers understand the curriculum\u2026even  though they might pinch it a bit\u2026or expand it more
-Remarkable teachers  are passionate about their subject
-Remarkable teachers  are passionate about children\u2026love working with them
-Remarkable teachers  are remembered  \u2026 forever
-Remarkable teachers are cut from various  cloths\u2026they  are not digital cut outs\u2026they differ\u2026students notice

I had a lot of remarkable teachers


Phyllis Morgan\u2026who loved Latin but also  spent much  of her life finding  places in the  work world  for her students\u2026and
who recognized distress and took action.
Evan Cruikshank\u2026who admitted there were things  he did  not know about our world\u2026instilled a desire  to work as  a  team in the classroom
Roberta Charlesworth\u2026who lifted  me  by my ear and  drummed one clear lesson into my teen age brains  \u201cI judge people by what they do,
not by what they say.\u2019
Duncan Green\u2026who  found a place for everyone in his  classes\u2026in his school  play\u2026on his track and field team\u2026no one was  left out
Fred Burford\u2026who  made math seem easy\u2026and  who elevated a nondescript bunch of teen age boys into a formidable team of football players\u2026
education requires  team  work.  I got the hop, step and  jump\u2026not a  stellar role but one I  could attempt.
Miss Sharpley, Grade 6, who made every student feel important but who also  treated every student the same\u2026
Mr.  Herman Couke\u2026who suspended  me for 5 days for spotting a  football game played by  an  enemy school\u2026that
was  unethical behaviour he explained\u2026I have to suspend you Alan \u2026 your first offence\u2026must treat all students the same
or our educational system will collapse into a sea  of favouritism.
John Ricker who taught me  a wonderful skill\u2026to keep my mouth shut if a  lesson  takes  off\u2026he  was  prepared  to
zip  sideways  in a  lesson\u2026peripheral \u2026 and he used silence as a control skill\u2026and  he showed deep  thinking and power using just as few  words as possible.
He knew  the power of  Silence\u2026slow sipping of his  coffee  with his  eyes ferreting the room\u2026then with one word\u2026the word \u201cReally\u201d
he established  that historical  causes and effects are never simple\u2026many causes of  one big effect\u2026and that effect had  consequences
that were varied \u2026 not simple.   If he  were in  your class  next Monday he might ask\u201d
   -Who is Donald Trump?
  -Why did so many Americans vote  for him?   
  -Why did the  Journalist Woodward title his book on Trump, FEAR?
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n

<\/div>\n

 Or he  might just say, \u201cI was thinking the other night about human  civilization, what makes us remarkable?  Do we have a future?
