&nbsp;Because for<br class=\"\">the last half &nbsp;century\u202648 years I have sat among you\u2026joined &nbsp;your tables\u2026<br class=\"\">shared &nbsp;your joys and &nbsp;your failures\u2026noticed &nbsp;things that make you remarkable<br class=\"\"><br class=\"\">-Remarkable teachers &nbsp;are respected\u2026first and &nbsp;foremost\u2026without that respect Remarkability fizzles.<br class=\"\">-Remarkable teachers remember names\u2026memorize names &nbsp;of their students from the get go<br class=\"\">-Remarkable teachers can &nbsp;control their classrooms\u2026clear objectives<br class=\"\">-Remarkable teachers never humiliate their students<br class=\"\">-Remarkable teachers &nbsp;have thick skins\u2026not all teaching goes &nbsp;smoothly\u2026sometimes a &nbsp;student might<br class=\"\">tell a teacher to Go to Hell\u2026that is a &nbsp;real &nbsp;teaching moment\u2026remarkable teachers &nbsp;know that.<br class=\"\">-Remarkable teachers recognize distress in certain &nbsp;students\u2026and provide help\u2026or get help.<br class=\"\">-Remarkable teachers laugh a &nbsp;lot\u2026and can laugh at themselves<br class=\"\">-Remarkable teachers are positive people;e<br class=\"\">-RemarKalbe teachers respect social distance\u2026they are called &nbsp;Sir, &nbsp;Miss, or Mr\u2026not Joe, John or Judy<br class=\"\">-Remarkable teachers enjoy rather than fear parents &nbsp;nights<br class=\"\">-Remarkable teachers want their students &nbsp;to achieve\u2026to be elevated<br class=\"\">-Remarkable teachers know what they are doing\u2026the lessons are going somewhere\u2026coherent<br class=\"\">-Remarkable teachers understand the curriculum\u2026even &nbsp;though they might pinch it a bit\u2026or expand it more<br class=\"\">-Remarkable teachers &nbsp;are passionate about their subject<br class=\"\">-Remarkable teachers &nbsp;are passionate about children\u2026love working with them<br class=\"\">-Remarkable teachers &nbsp;are remembered &nbsp;\u2026 forever <br class=\"\">-Remarkable teachers are cut from various &nbsp;cloths\u2026they &nbsp;are not digital cut outs\u2026they differ\u2026students notice<br class=\"\"><br class=\"\">I had a lot of remarkable teachers <br class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><br class=\"\">Phyllis Morgan\u2026who loved Latin but also &nbsp;spent much &nbsp;of her life finding &nbsp;places in the &nbsp;work world &nbsp;for her students\u2026and<br class=\"\">who recognized distress and took action.<br class=\"\">Evan Cruikshank\u2026who admitted there were things &nbsp;he did &nbsp;not know about our world\u2026instilled a desire &nbsp;to work as &nbsp;a &nbsp;team in the classroom<br class=\"\">Roberta Charlesworth\u2026who lifted &nbsp;me &nbsp;by my ear and &nbsp;drummed one clear lesson into my teen age brains &nbsp;\u201cI judge people by what they do,<br class=\"\">not by what they say.\u2019<br class=\"\">Duncan Green\u2026who &nbsp;found a place for everyone in his &nbsp;classes\u2026in his school &nbsp;play\u2026on his track and field team\u2026no one was &nbsp;left out<br class=\"\">Fred Burford\u2026who &nbsp;made math seem easy\u2026and &nbsp;who elevated a nondescript bunch of teen age boys into a formidable team of football players\u2026<br class=\"\">education requires &nbsp;team &nbsp;work. &nbsp;I got the hop, step and &nbsp;jump\u2026not a &nbsp;stellar role but one I &nbsp;could attempt.<br class=\"\">Miss Sharpley, Grade 6, who made every student feel important but who also &nbsp;treated every student the same\u2026<br class=\"\">Mr. &nbsp;Herman Couke\u2026who suspended &nbsp;me for 5 days for spotting a &nbsp;football game played by &nbsp;an &nbsp;enemy school\u2026that<br class=\"\">was &nbsp;unethical behaviour he explained\u2026I have to suspend you Alan \u2026 your first offence\u2026must treat all students the same<br class=\"\">or our educational system will collapse into a sea &nbsp;of favouritism.<br class=\"\">John Ricker who taught me &nbsp;a wonderful skill\u2026to keep my mouth shut if a &nbsp;lesson &nbsp;takes &nbsp;off\u2026he &nbsp;was &nbsp;prepared &nbsp;to<br class=\"\">zip &nbsp;sideways &nbsp;in a &nbsp;lesson\u2026peripheral \u2026 and he used silence as a control skill\u2026and &nbsp;he showed deep &nbsp;thinking and power using just as few &nbsp;words as possible.<br class=\"\">He knew &nbsp;the power of &nbsp;Silence\u2026slow sipping of his &nbsp;coffee &nbsp;with his &nbsp;eyes ferreting the room\u2026then with one word\u2026the word \u201cReally\u201d<br class=\"\">he established &nbsp;that historical &nbsp;causes and effects are never simple\u2026many causes of &nbsp;one big effect\u2026and that effect had &nbsp;consequences <br class=\"\">that were varied \u2026 not simple. &nbsp;&nbsp;If he &nbsp;were in &nbsp;your class &nbsp;next Monday he might ask\u201d<br class=\"\"> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;-Who is Donald Trump?<br class=\"\"> &nbsp;&nbsp;-Why did so many Americans vote &nbsp;for him? &nbsp;&nbsp;<br class=\"\"> &nbsp;&nbsp;-Why did the &nbsp;Journalist Woodward title his book on Trump, FEAR?<br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;Or he &nbsp;might just say, \u201cI was thinking the other night about human &nbsp;civilization, what makes us remarkable?
