DO YOU WANT A SLUG OF HARD CIDER?<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">&nbsp; Date &nbsp;October, 1953<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">&nbsp; Place &nbsp;Humberside Collegiate auditorium<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">&nbsp; Purpose: &nbsp;School Dance<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">&nbsp; Startling Event: &nbsp;Crock of hard cider passed around<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">&nbsp; Person: Alan Skeoch, Grade 9<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">\u201cHere take a slug of this, kid\u2026right from the gallon crock.\u201d<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">\u201cNever you mind\u2026take a slug or pass it on. &nbsp;Consider&nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">the stuff an initiation into high school.\u201d<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">\u201cBut what is it?\u201d<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">\u201cGrow up kid, it\u2019s just hard cider\u2026Ontario hard cider\u2026.won\u2019t kill you.\u201d<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">\u201cNot too sure.\u201d<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">\u201cYour a big man now, kid\u2026no short pants anymore\u2026take a slug.&#8221;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">That happened a long time ago. &nbsp;Back in 1953 at Humberside Collegiate&#8217;s first fall dance. &nbsp;My eyes were wide<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">open\u2026saucers taking &nbsp;in a new world of big kids. &nbsp;I think I took a slug but not too sure. &nbsp;I know I whirled Elizabeth&nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Kilty a little too fast on the dance floor and her skirt went up like Marilyn Monroe\u2019s. &nbsp;That could have been the hard<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">cider at work.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Hard cider! &nbsp;Quite common and not wonderfull\u2026looked sort of muddy and tasted way too sweet to be enjoyed.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Years later I discovered why this elicit booze was not so great. &nbsp; Our cider, Ontario cider in unlabelled gallon crocks<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">was made with windfall applies likely. &nbsp;Apples from a bunch of trees. &nbsp;Maybe even wormy! &nbsp;Who could tell if worms<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">were present once the apples were ground to pulp with a spiked roller and then pressed in a wooden press<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">that had been sitting in a barn or back yard garage for a year.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">I never developed a taste for hard cider after that welcome by the big boys at Humberside.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Never is the wrong word. &nbsp;In 1965 , Marjorie, Eric and I lived on hard cider for one wonderful summer.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Bulmer\u2019s hard cider and the occasional mug of &nbsp;\u201cScrumpy\u201d from beneath a pub plank counter. &nbsp;The<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">scrumpy reminded me of the gallon crock stuff. &nbsp;But the commercial Bulmer\u2019s cider was wonderful<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">and inexpensive. &nbsp;Our tour of England, Ireland and Scotland in 1965 floated on English cider\u2026Herefordshire<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">English cider in heavy glass quart bottles with stoneware screw tops. &nbsp;Available everywhere along with<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">all kinds of cheeses and great turtle shaped loaves of fresh bread. &nbsp;The cost was minimal and the place<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">to dine could be a dry stone fence or a great pile of loose stacked hay in a farm field.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">That kind of cider is sold in LCBO stores even today. &nbsp;About $3 a can. &nbsp;No stone topped bottles anymore.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">WHY IS HEREFORDSHIRE CIDER SO ADMIRED BY THOSE WHO THIRST&#8221;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><span style=\"caret-color: rgb(102, 101, 101); color: rgb(102, 101, 101); font-family: Cardo, serif; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" class=\"\">&#8220;The Redstreak cider apple is one of the oldest cider apples in circulation.&nbsp; &nbsp;A few books establish the Redstreak&nbsp; cider apple trees to Herefordshire in 1600&#8217;s. One book notes the Redstreak cider apples were&nbsp;considered \u2018fit for Princess\u2019 establishing Herefordshire\u2019s reputation as the cider country of England. Produces a good quality bittersweet juice, an excellent addition for blending. The fruit is medium to small yellow apple with red strip<\/span><font color=\"#666565\" face=\"Cardo, serif\" class=\"\">\u201d<\/font><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span style=\"caret-color: rgb(102, 101, 101); color: rgb(102, 101, 101); font-family: Cardo, serif; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">(ADVERTISEMENT by one Hereford nursery now offering Cider Apple trees at $44.90 each)<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">What is so special about English cider\u2026especially Herefordshire English cider? &nbsp;It\u2019s the apples.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Special cider applies\u2026the greatest of which was the REDSTREAK. &nbsp;Not a spectacular apple. &nbsp;Very<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">nondescript\u2026small, perhaps a bit of apple scab\u2026yellow background with red streaks\u2026bitter sweet&nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">taste. &nbsp;Definitely not an eating apple or an applesauce apple. &nbsp;But a perfect cider apple. &nbsp;Proved so<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">by centuries of care. &nbsp;Imported into Hereford and<span style=\"caret-color: rgb(32, 33, 34); color: rgb(32, 33, 34); background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" class=\"\">&nbsp;named the &#8220;Scudamore<\/span><span style=\"caret-color: rgb(32, 33, 34); color: rgb(32, 33, 34); background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" class=\"\">&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Crab_apple\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Crab apple\" style=\"caret-color: rgb(32, 33, 34); text-decoration: none; color: rgb(11, 0, 128); background-image: none;\">Crab<\/a><span style=\"caret-color: rgb(32, 33, 34); color: rgb(32, 33, 34); background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" class=\"\">&#8220;, having first been intensively planted by the diplomat and politician<\/span><span style=\"caret-color: rgb(32, 33, 34); color: rgb(32, 33, 34); background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\" class=\"\">&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Scudamore,_1st_Viscount_Scudamore\" title=\"John Scudamore, 1st Viscount Scudamore\" style=\"caret-color: rgb(32, 33, 34); text-decoration: none; color: rgb(11, 0, 128); background-image: none;\" class=\"\">John Scudamore, 1st Viscount Scudamore<\/a>&nbsp;from France &nbsp;and grown<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">on his country estate. &nbsp;Noted as being present as far back as 1600.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">DO NOT BUY APPLE REDSTREAK APPLE SEEDS\u2026APPLES DO NOT BREED TRUE.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Apples do not breed true. &nbsp;Orchards with mixed varieties will never produce Redstreak apples. &nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">They must be grafted from cuttings. &nbsp;Edward Freeman, my grandfatheer, was good at grafting. &nbsp;Our farm once had<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">wild apple trees on which he grafted prize apples but granddad never produced fine cider.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">His alcohol thirst was satisfied with rhubarb wine and the occasional bottle of whisky that mom<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">smuggled into the fifth line kitchen unseen by the \u2018lips that touch liquor will never touch mine\u2019 crowd.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Granddad did love apples and he knew how to get apples with his grafting knife and wax.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">I remember some branches on Edward Freeman\u2019s wild apple trees we\u2019re loaded with fruit while<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">the rest of the tree had tiny apples or none at all. &nbsp;I was too young to know that Edward Freeman had&nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">been busy grafting.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Hereford Redstreak\" jsaction=\"load:XAeZkd;\" jsname=\"HiaYvf\" class=\"n3VNCb\" data-noaft=\"1\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"A265D753-2933-4E1F-A116-B0E757B70E02\" style=\"caret-color: rgb(32, 33, 34); color: rgb(32, 33, 34); font-family: sans-serif; margin: 0px;\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/YGfnGey2rXJD0cMNRaW8jQuiVTiSYvR63fXPKgjl.jpeg\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Herefordshire Redstreak apple today\u2026small, bitter, bit of scab\u2026and lots of thick skin..perfect for cider.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">This is only the beginning of my apple episode. &nbsp;A teaser. &nbsp;The bigger story is coming. &nbsp;Previous episodes have<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">outlined the nature of the Country Estates\u2026up to 5,000 o them\u2026that were being built and renovated by<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">affluent English families during the 18th and 19th centuries. &nbsp; Along with the renovations came the desire<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">to develop unique gardens with plants gathered by plant collectors roaming the seven seas. &nbsp; &nbsp;Some plants&nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">did not need to be distant. &nbsp;There were so many apple varieties in England that many had no names.&nbsp;Thousands<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">of apple varieties most of them unidentified.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Not for long. &nbsp; Head Gardeners&nbsp;and owners of these country estates began paying attention to the wealth of apple varieties, particularly those<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">in Herefordshire. &nbsp; Walled gardens had sections for fruit orchards\u2026exotic fruit like peaches and nectarines but<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">also apples and pears. &nbsp;My&nbsp;grandfather, Edward Freeman, was one of these head gardeners for a short few years between 1898 and 1906<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">at Eywood Court in Herefordshire. &nbsp;Some of His plantings still existed in the 1960\u2019s, perhaps still do.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">From 1878 to 1884 or thereabouts two women were at work with paint brushes making Hereford Apples&nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">famous among art lovers and gardeners.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">The most spectacular art of the apple emerged at the same time as the gardeners nursed their orchards from decline<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">to explosive growth.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">What emerged was one of the wonders of the world of the<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">apple. &nbsp;Two volumes of wonderful art were produced by two ladies between 1878<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">and 1884 titled THE HEREFORDSHIRE POMONA. &nbsp;Only 600 copies were printed. Volumes<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">that are so highly valued today that when copies were moved from one place to another<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">they were accompanied by armed guards. (*that&nbsp;will be subject of Episode 523 coming next)<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Book breakers have broken the spines of many of these books and then professional&nbsp;<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">framers have enclosed the apple artwork into high cost lithographic art.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">Shortly after 1965 Marjorie and I were able to buy two of these pages. &nbsp;They now<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">hang in our house. &nbsp;Visitors hardly notice them. &nbsp;Who would want a picture of<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">a bunch of apples in their living room? &nbsp;One of these (right in picture below) is<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">the famed Redstreak now lost to the world.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"8E33060D-72A6-4B86-A1E0-737E83ADA3D9\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/IMG_0022-rotated.jpg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Our living room is small but features two very famous lithographs on the north wall\u2026see them?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"32750EE4-5243-4C7D-A944-D680D5842E24\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/IMG_0024-rotated.jpg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">One is more famous than the other\u2026our dog Woody is aligned perfectly\u2026his body<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">points to the picture. &nbsp;See it?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"F2E53BF1-F0D6-4BEF-9E06-EBD93B7B8C1A\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/IMG_0025-rotated.jpg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Close up\u2026just a picture of some apples, right? &nbsp;Wrong\u2026picture of the Redstreak<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">apple variety. &nbsp;Now believed to be extinct.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"2C2224B3-0EC0-42DB-967D-CA669D037143\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/IMG_0026-rotated.jpg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">THE famed redstreak cider apple\u2026the cornerstone of great hard cider. &nbsp;Nondescript<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">in appearance. &nbsp;Small. &nbsp;yellowish skin covered with red streaks. Not tasty. &nbsp;But when converted from apple juice to hard apple<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><font size=\"5\" class=\"\">cider a wonder happens.<\/font><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<table class=\"infobox biota\" style=\"caret-color: rgb(32, 33, 34);
