{"id":19544,"date":"2021-12-30T21:57:36","date_gmt":"2021-12-31T02:57:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/?p=19544"},"modified":"2021-12-30T21:58:53","modified_gmt":"2021-12-31T02:58:53","slug":"episode-497-eywood-gardens-survive-the-demolition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/?p=19544","title":{"rendered":"episode 497    EYWOOD GARDENS SURVIVE THE DEMOLITION"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div dir=\"auto\" style=\"word-wrap: break-word; -webkit-nbsp-mode: space; line-break: after-white-space;\" class=\"\">EPSPDE 497 &nbsp; &nbsp;EYWOOD GARDENS SURVIVE THE DEMOLITION<\/p>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">alan skeoch<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Dec. 29,2021<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"90167872-EFF4-4664-AB65-CC26FA933843\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/3EF18AC5-D96A-4876-9D7E-F599E3E25E58_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">EYWOOD GARDN GREENHOUSE CIRCA 1965\u2026SURPRISINGLY INTACT<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">What remained of Eywood after the demolition? &nbsp;Over many visits to Eywood I was able to&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">capture many pictures of the Estate as it still stands to this day. &nbsp; While the grand mansion was<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">demolished and its\u2019 carcase remains as a downer to anyone visiting Eywood\u2026.while this is true,<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">so much of the Estate remains intact which is remarkable and likely not true for the hundreds of<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">similar Country Estate mansions demolished ine 20th century.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">I have no pictures of the mansion interior except for the picture below which gives a clear<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">indication of the fine living conditions of Lord and Lady Oxford and subsequent owners of<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Eywood.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Just for fun see how many things you would want in your house and make an imaginary bid.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">On one of our visits to Eywood, Cyril Griffiths took us to a nearby farm owned by the Edwards<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">who were loosely connected to our family. &nbsp;Inside their home were very grand pieces of furniture<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">bought at auction from Eywood. &nbsp;Particularly I remember a huge dining room table that would<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">take four people to lift and sideboard cupboard to match. &nbsp;Memory could be wrong though.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cWhat am i bid for these fireplace ANDIRONS?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cWhat am I bid for this FINE ANTLERED DEER HEAD?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cWhat am i bid for this SIDE BOARD CUPBOURD AND CONTENTS OF FINE CHINA?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cWhat am I bid for these PERIOD SIDE CHAIRS?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cWhat am I bid for THE STAIR RAILINGS?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cWhat am I bid for these TWO DECORATIVE URNS?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cWhat am I bid for THE FINE CARVED FIREPLACE MANTLE?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cWhat am I bid for the HARDWOOD FLOOR BOARDS?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"EC6E6DA5-B490-4468-88A8-A1B3CA862E0E\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_20bda-3.jpg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"D6F2819B-3772-452F-8C54-7F1E50187769\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/C702199A-AA32-42B1-A13E-5C70DF113B0D_1_201_a.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">THE EYWOOD GARDENS<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">SURVIVING BUILDINGS STILL PRESENT ON THE EYWOOD ESTATE, THIS<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">EPISODE WILL FEATURE THE EYWOOD GARDENS WHICH ARE INTACT<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">TO THIS DAY.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">It should come as no surprise to readers that our family were more interested<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">in the Eywood gardens that the ruin of the mansion. &nbsp;These gardens were&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">where granddad and his ten gardeners provided fresh food for the estate owners\u2026<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">counted the two horses as gardeners also.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Granddad Edward Freeman could build anything. &nbsp;Trained initially as a carpenter<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">he decided to change careers and became a landscape gardener. He &nbsp;admired<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">and emulated Capability Brown who designed much of the landscapes associated<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">with grand Country Estates like Eywood Court.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Granddad was a smart man. &nbsp;He built his own \u2018pin hole camera\u2019 and used it<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">to capture himself along with his 8 gardeners the youngest of which may<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">well be the future owner of the gardens.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">The men are holding the tools of their trade and even included the garden work<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">horses. &nbsp;Mom always said that granddad grew a beard to make himself look&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">older as you can see in his picture below (full suit with watch chain and fob)<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Another striking feature of this picture if how nicely dressed are the gardeners.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">There is something intangible &nbsp;in the picture\u2026.pride.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"FA8ADE0A-F470-47BF-9377-0D590CDFB800\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/48434A79-B7B2-4508-8A0C-B56B2DA897D5_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"F7141D65-10E8-4CF4-BBA1-8C2C982D0144\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/C179303B-AE0F-464D-8FED-B941981A79F6_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">As head gardener granddad received this house which is described as the gardeners \u2018cottage. &nbsp;Really quite a grand home.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Mom, (Elsie Freeman) was born here in 1901. &nbsp; The earlier pin hole photo seems to have been taken beside the cottage which was<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">surrounded by the high brick walls in the Victorian tradition of estate gardens. &nbsp;Note my wife Marjorie at right bottom.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"D74A0FAB-6F0C-42A1-9B98-1B68E1449621\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/40FCA8D1-5304-4D9A-AF85-5C3372B05CE6_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Large hand painted photograph of mom, Elsie Freeman, taken at Eywood using Granddad\u2019s may have been taken with<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">pin hole camera. &nbsp;Curly haired doll matches her curly hair. &nbsp; Horse included.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp;More about this photo at the end of this Episode.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"F40BD3F6-10EE-413A-B570-261316223EAA\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/03486E4C-A244-4BFC-849D-A3D0CD9EDCB9_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Head Gardener Edward Freeman at Eywood around 1900 . &nbsp;he seems to be laying out&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">an ornamental hedge characteristuc of formal plantings beyond the brick walled garden proper.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"4E9CC6D6-F5E7-43AE-97AA-DCAF0260FDB8\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/D5F54CF3-F71E-4313-870B-949D528A5917_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">There were many surprises for us at Eywood. Perhaps the biggest and most beautiful were the large rhotodendron plantings which Percy Mills<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">attributed to granddad. &nbsp; These flowering shrubs are located so they could be seen from the estate mansion. &nbsp;The small lake at Eywood is now<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">surrounded by these. &nbsp; It was easy to believe granddad had started them but that may or may not be true.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<blockquote type=\"cite\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"word-wrap: break-word; -webkit-nbsp-mode: space; line-break: after-white-space;\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<blockquote type=\"cite\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"word-wrap: break-word; -webkit-nbsp-mode: space; line-break: after-white-space;\">\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"12DFD8FF-FB20-4529-92AB-60627DBE20FF\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/343A583D-AF16-48CE-AD39-A7EC4E2D4038_1_105_c-2.jpeg\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">THIS photo of Eywood Court was professionally done I assume. &nbsp;Guessing 1920\u2019s. &nbsp; Note the plantings. &nbsp; Today the ornamental&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">pool is gone but the small lake remains a little distant from the house. The lake is hidden by masses of rhododendrons .<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Grandad\u2019s pin hole photo of Eywood is almost as good as this picture\u2026taken from same angle. &nbsp;So close is the photo<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">to the professional that I noticed Granddad\u2019s has been used often over the century.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"8F796890-1CB2-491F-BD59-29FF64D0A77E\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/3211C655-C3F4-4347-9D72-89088FEC1E84_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">The footpath and cart path from Eywood Court (mansion) to the Eyward Gardens (circa 1965)\u2026.path not used much in 1965 but in 1900<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">this path would have been used often by Edward Freeman and his gardeners. &nbsp;And also by many of the household staff who were<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">good friends with Edward and Louisa Freeman. &nbsp;So much so that their daughter Elsie Freeman had the Eywood cook, Mrs. Sears, &nbsp;as her<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">godmother.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"FC32038E-3643-4C3C-85A0-353DCADF00C9\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/97F5B507-D04C-4CA4-8652-91E7BC5B7C60_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">There is no longer a team of 8 gardeners to tend Eywood but Percy made a valiant effort to keep the flower garden in continuous bloom.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Garden home of Mom and family is top left. &nbsp; &nbsp;It is possible to see the formal nature of this part of the gardens with paths leading to a formal<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">stone decorative piece as centre point. &nbsp; &nbsp;In 1900 these flower plantings would have been weeded constantly and the pathways may well have<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">been brick lined.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"4CAF9509-C528-4F59-A0BC-C16DF1BA475B\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/D39BFB77-DCC7-437F-BFB0-A0F5F7AB4FE8_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">North wall of Eywood gardens with Head gardener;s cottage and greenhouse for nectarines and peaches.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"0E56A7F9-B40E-46BD-ABD8-1DA1AC917483\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/9E129787-1447-4501-9296-44B4DB0F4D77_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">MY brother Eric admiring the nectarine trees planted by granddad around 1900 and still providing fruit in 1965\u2026.with<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">a wooden tag &nbsp;saying \u201cE.
