height: 432px;\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/201214-hp-tobogganing-1914-f1231_it0563.jpg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">The &nbsp;toboggan runs at High Park were a big attraction\u2026sometimes ice covered<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">for speed. &nbsp;Sleighs were not wise to be used on the &nbsp;formal runs so sleighs<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">used the hills. &nbsp;I do not remember which run dad used. &nbsp; One thing sure,&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp;200 pound &nbsp;man on two steel runners &nbsp;could go at quite a velocity.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">ARNOLD RED SKEOCH: BROKEN RIBS AND BROKEN DREAMS<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cRed, take the boys &nbsp;out somewhere, they need the winter air.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cThey\u2019re fine in the park.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cTake them sleigh riding with that neW sleigh\u2026they will love iT.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cHigh Park\u2026the big toboggan run down to Grenadier Pond.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cLong &nbsp;way.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cIt is &nbsp;not\u2026catch the College Street Car\u2026goes right into High Park.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cHmmmm1\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">We had been presented with a sleigh at Christmas\u2026maybe new, maybe used.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">It was s beauty with steel runners and &nbsp;wooden hand hold that could steer it. &nbsp;Room<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">for one person.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"img\" style=\"width: 640px; height: 480px;\" apple-inline=\"yes\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/streetcar-4700-66.jpg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"img\" style=\"width: 830px; height: 554px;\" apple-inline=\"yes\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/11089735476_8be0fda16e_b.jpeg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">So the three of us &nbsp;mounted the old &nbsp;De Witt street car &nbsp;then running on College<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Street. &nbsp;Big lumbering ancient things made of wood. &nbsp;They even once had wood<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">or coal stoves mid way down to provide heat. &nbsp;And they rattled a &nbsp;lot when moving so<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the ride itself was a &nbsp;great adventure for us.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Eric and I jumped off at the High Park loop and dad carried the wonderful sleigh painted<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">red with varnished wood slashes. &nbsp;It sparkled. &nbsp;Dad may have even pulled the pair<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">of us across the park to the western side where the great expanse of Grenadier pond&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">sparkled in the sunshine. &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">The long hill down to the pond was &nbsp;well peopled. &nbsp;Lots of sleighs and toboggans<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">zooming down the long slope and out onto the ice covered pond. &nbsp;Dad said there<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">were a bunch of dead soldiers at the bottom of the pond with their cannons. &nbsp;Drowned<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">in some war long ago when fleeing an American invasion. &nbsp;Could have been bull<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">shit but we believed him. &nbsp;The story put icing on the cake. A little more danger.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">What if we fell through the ice? &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">That never happened. &nbsp; As a matter of fact we never even got a chance to go down the<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">hill on the sleigh.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201c Stand side boys, &nbsp;I will test the sleigh on the first run.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cAww\u2026\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cJust to be sure it works right.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">(Now Dad was s big man\u2026maybe 200 to 220 pounds of mostly muscle from building big tires)<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cDad, don\u2019t break &nbsp;the sleigh.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cShut up, here I go.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">(And &nbsp;Dad soon disappeared in the crowd of people sleighing. &nbsp;There was even a slight dusting of<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">snow falling.)<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cDid &nbsp;you see him, Eric?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cAt first\u2026but not now.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cWhen will he get back?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cSoon.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cHow soon.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cCold up here\u2026wish Dad would get back up the hill.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cCrowd down there.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cWhere is Dad?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">(We waited and &nbsp;waited. &nbsp; Two cold little boys in high cut boots and home made breeches \u2026 made by mom who<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">made all our winter clothing out of old coats. &nbsp;We waited. &nbsp;Waited. &nbsp;Dad never returned)<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cMaybe he\u2019s down with that crowd watching something.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cLet\u2019s walk down and see.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cCareful\u2026sleighs coming.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cDodge.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">We &nbsp;found the crowd and weaselled our way to the front where we found Dad and the sleight. &nbsp;Dad was<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">wrapped around a tree. &nbsp;Hurt. &nbsp;The sleigh was a &nbsp;shambles\u2026twisted into a piece of scrap.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Some men helped Dad to his feet. &nbsp;He could stand but was in pain. &nbsp;As we found out later<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">he had broken his ribs\u2026not all &nbsp;of them but some of them. &nbsp;He hobbled up the long hill.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cWhat about the sleigh, Dad?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cLeave the son of a bitch there. &nbsp;It was no goddamned good.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cBut Dad, it\u2019s our sleigh.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cDid not steer \u2026 leave it.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cOur sleigh\u2026our sleigh\u2026our sleigh\u2026&#8221;we may have whimpered.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Then again we did know Dad was &nbsp;hurt. &nbsp;Not sure which pain was &nbsp;worst the smashed sleigh<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">or knowledge that dad &nbsp;was injured. &nbsp; I think it was the sleigh.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Later, Dad &nbsp;got some doctor to bind him up. &nbsp;Great white bandaged<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">around his upper body. &nbsp;Did he stay home? &nbsp;Nope. &nbsp;I think he went to<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">work that Monday as usual.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cMom, Dad &nbsp;smashed our sleigh\u2026can we get another?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cWait and &nbsp;see.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">(I don\u2019t think we ever did get another sleigh until our teen age years.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">But that long hill down to Grenadier Pond is &nbsp;graven deep in my consciousness.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">I suppose things &nbsp;could have been worse had &nbsp;Dad gone through the ice to<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">join the British Grenadiers.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">alan skeoch<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">April &nbsp;20, &nbsp;2020<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"img\" style=\"width: 800px;
