(circa 2020) &nbsp;In this series we will retrieve our pets\u2026memory at work.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cDo you remember Your pets, Marjorie?\u201d &nbsp; A comment Just to see if she could remember the pets that made our lives full of<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">affection, excitement, compassion and tears. &nbsp; Marjorie did better than remember she wrote them down in the proper order.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Now my task is to put flesh on their bones. &nbsp; Most memories revolve around cats and dogs. &nbsp;But not all. &nbsp;We had ducks, a goose,<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">chameleons, frogs, a horse\u2026so many.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">PETS ON THE EDGE OF CONSCIOUSNESS\u2026A BEGINNING<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"A9159431-F590-4E76-A788-D3E09BF282F9\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/6A0DB795-5AE7-4104-BC9B-9A1007125E51_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">NAME UNKNOWN. &nbsp; the cocker spaniel in the cart pictured below was a part of the Hughes family before little Marjorie was born. &nbsp;Her brother Doug&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">trained it to be a wagon passenger as you can see below. &nbsp; Marjorie remembers only Bonnie, a later pet. &nbsp;\u201cBONNNIE was a black cocker spaniel who had a single puppy called BUDDY when she&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">was ten years old. &nbsp;Daddy gave him to a baseball player.\u201d &nbsp; She missed him but had her two cats, TOM and PETER and a garage full of rabbits.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">She thinks both Tom and Peter did breeding duties in the neighbourhood. &nbsp;Today that is unusual but the music of tom cats howling was common in<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the 1940\u2019s and 1950\u2019s. &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"411EE5ED-EFD2-4302-A459-82127261C449\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/02AD36CF-0AD7-4B8D-8846-F57168EBF5B4_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Doug Hughes with his cocker spaniel, &nbsp;name unknown. &nbsp;Circa 1939.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">TINKER was the first cat I remember. &nbsp;She was not remarkable in appearance but she sure had nine lives. &nbsp;One of these lives<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">were expended in the winter of 1944 &nbsp;when Dad decided it was easier to drop her from the porch than the front door. &nbsp;Our porch was<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">high up in a Victorian house divided into apartments. Our rooms were a good 20 feet in the air &nbsp; When Tinker fell she disappeared in<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the snow. &nbsp;Emerged nonchalantly. &nbsp;The great snowfall of &nbsp;1944. &nbsp; I was six years old.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Pets in Freeman family picture below\u2026a horse and a dog along with 8 children one of which is my grandfather. &nbsp; Location? &nbsp;Lyons Hall,<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">near Kington, Herefordshire, England, about 1900. &nbsp;Half of the children came to Canada but not the horse or dog.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Pets were important.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"A5C120D6-1EC4-43E3-A2A4-2BC78A618727\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/311CA936-877A-4DD8-84E5-9ACB2BE40411_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">SPOT was the name of this little dog, &nbsp;At least that name comes to mind. &nbsp;I have no memory of him or her. &nbsp; Mom, Elsie Freeman, married Arnold<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Skeoch in 1937. &nbsp;Both were the children of farmers in Wellington County, Ontario. I was born in Toronto in 1938. &nbsp; Wish I could remember Spot but cannot.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">I only remember TINKER because of dad\u2019s novel way of putting her out on winter days in 1944. &nbsp;i.e. Dropped from our flat in an old Victorian house<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">at 18 Sylvan Avenue, west Toronto.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"6DE021C5-D5A5-4FAE-9617-2729DFC761D1\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/BBE8DF1B-94A9-4BAF-B3BE-C9A2DFBB0963_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">PETS FULLLY FLEDGED IN MEMORY BEGIN NOW<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">PETE was granddad and grandma Freeman\u2019s farm dog. &nbsp;So lovable\u2026so glad to see my brother Eric and I on our regular week-end&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">farm visits. &nbsp;Unfortunately he chased sheep. &nbsp;Angus McEchern on the neighbouring farm had she and decided to scare Pete with a&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">bullet as Pete skedaddled home. &nbsp; Angus shot Pete dead. &nbsp; Everyone, including Angus , was devastated.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"F3AB0BE4-FFD1-4EA3-BD08-3A3DE111C811\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/9D1318FC-84DE-467C-94A2-E059CE40EFEC_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"35E86EC8-0110-4353-B5F0-E0241FAF11CE\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/9C2759A0-95DD-4704-A486-E11B1185541B_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"83091ABD-EC23-408D-BD30-B910431FFD36\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/0041AEDA-B3EC-4957-90CE-6BC87449C966_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">IS this a picture of Pete? &nbsp; &nbsp;Thought so for years. but now ir seems I was wrong. Look closely. &nbsp; Below is a picture of<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Pete\u2019s dog house beside the farm house. &nbsp;Not pretty but wrapped in sacks for warmth. &nbsp;In winter Pete lived in the<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">front room\u2026only room heated by a big wood stove.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"6947DFE7-6AC6-422C-BD9B-E10E467E36EA\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/671FB890-F097-4CC0-8EA1-EB030AFC0FD4_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">SCOTTIE, a black scotch terrier replaced Pete. &nbsp;Not as lovable as Pete but he was loyal and stuck around the farm. &nbsp;Not a sheep chaser.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Grandma gave him to me &nbsp;the day she died. \u201cAlan, look after Scottie, I will not see him again.\u201d &nbsp;So Scottie became a city dog which took<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">some getting used to\u2026like crossing Annette Street in Toronto\u2026when he tried a car got him and he rolled down the road after the impact<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">then got to his feet and scampered back to our house. &nbsp;He was tough. &nbsp;And he had notions about romance. &nbsp;When I tried to kiss Marjorie<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">in our old \u201953 Meteor, Scottie growled and put his head between ours. &nbsp;Protecting Marjorie maybe\u2026or protecting me.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"A9655881-6185-46D2-8B6C-E901AEA4B288\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/6E6593B5-2E02-43DF-9916-3C8CFD65FDF7_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">PETE &nbsp;THE SECOND Was our first family dog. &nbsp;His arrival and Dad\u2019s retirement coincided so Dad took over walking the dog by driving Pete<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">down to High Park and letting him run free. &nbsp;He loved to run\u2026a super athlete. &nbsp;No danger that the dog catcher would get him and if<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">there was trouble dad was quite ready for an argument. &nbsp; &nbsp;Pete was with Dad the day he set the whole farm on fire. &nbsp;Grass fire out of<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">control. &nbsp;Dad came home with his pants and bare legs blackened with ashes. &nbsp;Pete thought Dad was trying to outrun him but Dad was&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">trying to stop the fire with his coat. &nbsp;Burned about 10 acres of the 25 acre farm. &nbsp;Pete was easier to control than Dad.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"CD0281B9-7007-456D-A316-882826503892\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/95F395CD-6C33-4491-8765-8E12A8FCBE20_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">PRESQUE NEIGE, below, &nbsp;was a sort of belated wedding gift from Faye Nichols when she took a job in the Arctic. &nbsp;See the dusting of gray<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">on her head? &nbsp;Otherwise she was \u2018almost snow\u2019. &nbsp;When I got a job in the bush north of Sault Ste Marie in the summer of 1964\u2026a geophysical<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">prospering job\u2026Marjorie joined your crew a week or so after we got established art Paraise lodge on the Algoma Central Railway line.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Marjorie\u2019s arrival was surprising. &nbsp;When we flagged the ACR engine to stop, Marjorie descended dressed like a queen carrying two<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">prize objects. &nbsp; One was her sewing machine. &nbsp;The other was Presque Neige. &nbsp;Amusing because there was no electricity for the sewing machine<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">and there were wolves howling at night for Presqjue Neige.We had a grand time on that job singing the fold songs of Ian and Sylvia,<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Gordon Lightfoot and Johny Cash &nbsp;while Presque sat on Marjorie\u2019s knee oblivious to the wolves.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"E1795D23-9889-45FA-91AE-CCF28878BE3C\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/C1F339A7-B2F3-4DC8-9300-657078BBA56C_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Marjorie flagging down the train on the wilderness route north from Sault Ste Marie.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"433B023D-82A4-4E65-8498-C6133012C7CA\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/02D131A2-B578-4FEF-9B7E-592FEC81A8D3_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Marjorie dancing with Serge Lavloie beside the tracks with the fellow looking amused. &nbsp;Presque Neige nowhere in sight. &nbsp;Too dangerous&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">to let her run free. &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"9C04262E-9A54-4975-B82A-C67F85A7E4AE\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/425510E3-1A09-44BB-9A56-3E31E9C39417_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Presque Neige was quite content in our little cabin.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"1CECF25A-5690-4460-8E76-3F0CD2DBE0A0\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/9E8E331B-3E53-4327-A05C-5E1AEE64DF94_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">My Arctic sleeping bag could hold two people and one cat.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">NEXT?
