{"id":19008,"date":"2021-10-29T14:30:33","date_gmt":"2021-10-29T18:30:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/?p=19008"},"modified":"2021-10-29T14:34:15","modified_gmt":"2021-10-29T18:34:15","slug":"episode-465-black-walnuts-what-can-we-do-with-them","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/?p=19008","title":{"rendered":"EPISODE 465   BLACK WALNUTS&#8230;WHAT CAN WE DO WITH THEM?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>EPISODE 465 &nbsp; &nbsp;BLACK WALNUTS\u2026WHAT CAN WE DO WITH THEM?<\/p>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">alan skeoch<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">oct. 2021<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"F356989B-83C7-4628-AC83-0CC6EC58E44C\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/33467BC8-7BFA-42F2-A176-65657335B72A_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Every year someone gets conked with a falling black walnut. &nbsp;Like getting hit with a world series hardball.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">This year it was Marjorie\u2019s turn. &nbsp;She got wopped on the bare upper arm as she diligently tried to gather<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the walnuts before the cursed red squirrels got hem hidden away in the barns. &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Now we differ on black walnuts. &nbsp;I like them and have planted a number of trees on our farm. &nbsp;Marjorie does&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">not like them at all. &nbsp; A subject of some tension each year as the walnuts fall. &nbsp; they are edible but getting to<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the walnut meat requires a sledge hammer and careful hand picking the walnut meat from the tooth breaking<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">shards. &nbsp; Red squirrel teeth are better at this than human teeth. &nbsp;A walnut shard is capable of breaking the<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">best of human teeth. &nbsp;So walnuts are just wasted. &nbsp; We race to get as many as we can before<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the red squirrels. &nbsp;Then what should we do with the baskets of nuts? &nbsp; There was a time when I&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">pitch walnuts along the Ontario side roads like Johny Appleseed did. &nbsp; Now I take credit for a lot of walnut<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">trees in full growth with their progeny \u2018whopping\u2019 a few cars no doubt.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"1FDA77D8-CA31-4A47-8E92-9AD6559CB131\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/A71B37F4-6F75-4F1B-8F3F-E126CC643140_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"65E43894-0284-4156-A377-55629AF117E1\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/43388F93-A9AF-4580-B648-6EB1E1477148_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">what to do with this year\u2019s crop?
