In Ireland in 1960 There was one<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">cottage that stood out from others because the owner, perhaps his name was Mr. Casey, spent<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">a lot of time pruning and painting to make the place look magnificent.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"20008457-91B2-4B42-BAAB-EA2058D03BC1\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/C5C4E643-3B27-4D4E-A74D-67B7C0E764A3_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Sad to say a lot of these small rural cottages on one acre lots were abandoned. &nbsp;Or maybe it was just that I looked for signs of<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">the past and tended to photograph empty, often roofless, places where people once lived.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"C5FC15BE-1B75-4EAF-AE23-2D30D4F518A0\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/CBCF6253-9121-4B96-A4F9-DD82DC1BB9F2_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"F19E6EE7-EEB5-4399-A300-30F17E37A040\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/63A75010-6F09-4AF6-AC21-DEC42B449FC8_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">This home in Bunmahon was just abandoned and allowed to collapse. &nbsp; Barney told me a story &nbsp;about the former owners. &nbsp;A story<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">on the edge of my consciousness. &nbsp; I think the family retained ownership and just moved on\u2026let the house fall apart. &nbsp; Ruins like this<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">must have been common in the late 1870\u2019s when the mine closed and the people (population was around 2,000 then)\u2026.Miners are<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">nomadic. &nbsp; The miners of Bunmahon moved west to the United States and Canada.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"B9663116-69EA-4114-BCBD-7B71307206BA\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/275EC041-8073-472F-B90D-8BEF972E4AC9_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">This ancient bee hive home has withstood the ravages of time. &nbsp; AT one time a monk may have lived here contemplating\u2026.just contemplating.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">What? &nbsp; What would you think about &nbsp;while sitting cross legged in a tiny stone house where you couldn\u2019t stand? &nbsp;Just sitting there alone.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"E85CD76E-ED2F-4DD7-907A-A8EDD85ACE9D\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/C69A15D1-6D41-437C-89DA-44808C63819E_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"4C6A177B-E2C2-4CDE-9D48-3860CE3DA2E7\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/B31BDFD9-B231-4138-AE2F-44FA48924ACD_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"71B28691-152C-4239-A72C-2935A9927B13\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/F64F0148-FE6C-42E2-9FE6-A224054EF2DB_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">I am so glad I took this picture because it was so \u2019normal\u2019 to me in 1960. &nbsp; Homes that were whitewashed\u2026very neat in most<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">cases\u2026with every inch of the acre of land being used. &nbsp;Often with domestic animals.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">And ancient graveyards were often present.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"2A1528F4-FEA4-4F50-823F-04105F77955E\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/76446AB0-9584-42E2-BF82-B18E42A83245_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"CB78E94B-8E32-460C-90C0-ADACE0A8683B\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/30E9D5D9-ACA7-4D80-BED2-7EED8F659422_1_105_c.jpeg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">So many of the abandoned buildings looked like this\u2026as if the rooves had been removed deliberately. &nbsp;Seems to me I read somewhere that<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">landlords forcibly removed those rooves to force indigent tenants to move on\u2026i.e. &nbsp;people who were not paying rent. &nbsp; That happened<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">in the Highland Clearances in Scotland when large landwoners wanted land for sheep and not for people. &nbsp; The 1840\u2019s were rough years<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">made worse by the sudden failure of the potato crop across western Europe. &nbsp;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>EPISODE 443 &nbsp; IRISH STORIES\u2026IRISH COTTAGES (HOMES)&nbsp; alan skeoch oct. 2021 I wish I had taken pictures of many of the homes where our work force lived. &nbsp;As I remember they used the term \u2018cottage\u2019 for their homes. &nbsp;In Canada that has a different meaning. &nbsp;Second homes.
