&nbsp;Think of death by a thousand cuts and you will get an image of what it was like to climb oner Irish<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">fencerows. &nbsp;I needed Andy Dwan just to lift me through. &nbsp; In Alaska there was worry about Kodiak bears but we were armed<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">with 30-06 rifles and had helicopters to move about. &nbsp;In Ireland we worried about pigs and Gorse and ticks and farmers whose cattle<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">we stunned with electricity.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"CEB49A54-7891-49B0-8EBD-DA04F9659D96\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/EcnIuYAnS4CBGC5qm9B4HA_thumb_9de91.jpg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">This is a Gorse hedgerow. &nbsp; Lovely yellow flowers encased in a bed of countless needles. &nbsp;Perfect places for hedgehogs to<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">live but &nbsp;Hell to try and penetrate. &nbsp; Our grids had to be dead accurate\u2026straight. &nbsp;We had to climb through these damn hedges<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">somehow\u2026to slice holes..precise, arrow straight no matter what the resistance .<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"96FC59C2-8D97-4CAD-B4A7-68FA205932DD\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/wctZ1FnMRO6UU3SC5jQ7A_thumb_9f5e4.jpg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">In this picture Barney Dwan is showing the way through a rotodendron forests on a large Irish estate. &nbsp;\u201cTry not to cut the plants\u2026the<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">owner of the estate is not happy we are here.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"2F9459DB-19F5-4545-BF7E-94375FA0AA33\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_9de18.jpg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Need I say more. &nbsp;Ireland was not Alaska. &nbsp; But there were similarities when crossing rivers or streams.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">GROUP 2 &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;THE IRISH HEDGE CLIPPING CREW\u2026a job aided with Guinness.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"ACA267F4-5EFF-45B2-BF18-C31624413651\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/QEOYEhSQkK1tTdCENJV3g_thumb_9de93.jpg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"E9327335-4517-4F39-ABC2-C2D2FFFDDBEA\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_9f566.jpg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Imagine this: \u201cHere\u2019s a few half pints of Guinness lads. Can I take your picture?&#8221;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">THESE fellows were hired to slash the thorny Gorse (like brier only worse) hedges that intruded into the roads of Ireland. &nbsp;I think It was<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">a make work program to relieve Irish unemployment . They used hand tools that dated back centuries.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">If I remember correctly we bought the boys a bunch of Guinness bottles to make the job easier. Quite a<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">cross section of ages. &nbsp;All giving looks of good will. &nbsp;Can\u2019t imagine handing out beer to DHO employees<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">beside our highways. &nbsp; I should not have done that.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Look at those beautiful hedges behind them\u2026but do not touch \u2026thorns like needles by the thousands.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">GROUP THREE: &nbsp; HURLING ON AN IRISH BEACH WITH A VERY FRIENDLY LITTLE BOY<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"EFDCF397-D5B4-434E-8003-BF27619AACE6\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_9de4d.jpg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"A6BD7BD4-90E5-436F-A600-60A61EFB7D1F\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_9f594.jpg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">This picture was taken many years after my job in 1960\u2026decades later..in the 1970\u2019s when Marjorie and I took our boys, Kevin and<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Andrew on &nbsp;a tour of Bonmahon and region. &nbsp; &nbsp;The friendly gesture of this young boy was heart warming. &nbsp;He handed his hurling<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">stick to Andrew and a game began. &nbsp;Hurling is much like lacrosse only the weapon is harder should a player get a good whack<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">At your knee.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">In 1960, the lads took me to an evening hurling match played on a farm field. &nbsp;Quite a crowd gathered as the two teams beat a&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">little ball back an forth. &nbsp;I remember the toilet best. &nbsp;At the far end of the field several sheets of corrugated iron had been<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">erected as the backboards of a simple urinal. &nbsp;I do not remember any facilities for women.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">GROUP FOUR: &nbsp; THE IRISH &#8220;BEE HIVE \u201c HOMES\u2026ANCIENT TIMES ON THE DINGLE<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"533548E9-0FAE-497E-A3AA-AC40691A90A9\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_9f561.jpg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">IRISH BEHIVE HUTS &nbsp;(freestone, no masonary)<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"1FFDF2AF-29AA-4035-AE7F-B62F12DFC738\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_9f5e9.jpg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">BEE HIVE HUTS FOR IRISH MONKS<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">On a drive around the Dingle on the southwest corner of Ireland there are a number of these stone buildings where<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">long ago Irish monks lived and contemplated things spiritual\u2026or so it was believed. &nbsp;Place yourself in these stone<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">structures\u2026no cement , just the careful placing of stone. &nbsp; The long stones on the roof were placed should repairs<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">be necessary I suppose. &nbsp;ImagineTaking a few days to marvel at our place in the cosmos. Sitting in a bee hive stone hut<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">marvelling at our tenuous presence on this planet is not a bad idea. &nbsp; Some decision makers might be advised to do that today.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp;Most of us crawling into a bee hive hut would &nbsp;fear the roof collapse and think of little else.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"E8561811-263B-4603-A11D-BC3A1396D271\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_9de9e.jpg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div style=\"font-family: \"Trebuchet MS\", Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; margin: 0px;\" class=\"\">&#8216;It is worth remembering though that the beehive hut may have had uses other than as a monastic cell. Peter Harbinson [6] makes this interesting suggestion in a discussion of pilgrimage sites associated with Saint Brendan:<\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"\">\n<div style=\"font-family: \"Trebuchet MS\", Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; margin: 0px;\" class=\"\">By far the greatest concentration of these&nbsp;<i class=\"\">cloch\u00e1in<\/i>&nbsp;in Ireland is on the Dingle Peninsula, and almost all are found west of Mount Brandon.. the fact that these huts are found in such great numbers to the west of Brandon, yet are very much rarer in other parts of Kerry and elsewhere throughout the country, strongly suggests that these&nbsp;<i class=\"\">cloch\u00e1in<\/i>&nbsp;were the temporary habitations of pilgrims waiting for sufficiently clement weather to climb Mount Brandon. In a similar vein, one can explain those in the Glenfahan area, between Ventry and Slea Head, as temporary shelters for those awaiting the right wind to waft them to the Skelligs. If this explanation is correct, then the cloch\u00e1in could truly be described as Ireland\u2019s first and oldest surviving bed and breakfast establishments.\u201d<\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: \"Trebuchet MS\", Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; margin: 0px;\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: \"Trebuchet MS\", Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; margin: 0px;\" class=\"\">A SURPRISE<\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: \"Trebuchet MS\", Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; margin: 0px;\" class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: \"Trebuchet MS\", Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; margin: 0px;\" class=\"\">&nbsp;I punched up St. Skeoch in hopes of discovering who this sixth century saint really was\u2026if she ever existed. &nbsp;MAYBE the records of these bee&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"font-family: \"Trebuchet MS\", Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; margin: 0px;\" class=\"\">hive huts would help my search. Surprise!
