{"id":18180,"date":"2021-09-02T22:14:31","date_gmt":"2021-09-03T02:14:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/?p=18180"},"modified":"2021-09-12T14:16:36","modified_gmt":"2021-09-12T18:16:36","slug":"episode-421-monarch-butterflies-special-milkweed-garden-dire-prediction-30","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/?p=18180","title":{"rendered":"EPISODE 421    MONARCH BUTTERFLIES&#8230;.SPECIAL MILKWEED GARDEN&#8230;DIRE PREDICTION"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><br class=\"\"><\/p>\n<div>EPISODE 421 &nbsp; &nbsp;MONARCH BUTTERFLIES&#8230;.SPECIAL MILKWEED GARDEN\u2026DIRE PREDICTION<\/div>\n<div><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div>alan skeoch<\/div>\n<div>sept. 2, 2021<\/div>\n<div><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div>\n<blockquote type=\"cite\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\">Well, it\u2019s that time of year again when we start to worry about the Monarch Butterflies. &nbsp;Lots of<br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>doom and gloom\u2026talk about these beautiful creatures facing extinction. &nbsp;Let\u2019s hope it\u2019s<\/p><\/div>\n<div>just talk.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div>We are doing our part by leaving a good sized slice our garden exclusively for milk weed<\/div>\n<div>plants. &nbsp;In the past no respectable farmer would do that because milk weed is toxic to&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div>cattle. &nbsp;Or so I am told. &nbsp;I have never seen a cow munching milk weed. &nbsp;They seem to&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div>know plants. &nbsp;All over North America eccentrics like Marjorie and me have little patches<\/div>\n<div>of milk weed. &nbsp;Others, &nbsp;using little thought, spread the insecticide Round Up. Deadly.<\/div>\n<div><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div>And today there were two monarchs nosing about. &nbsp;I hope laying eggs. &nbsp;Eventual<\/div>\n<div>larvae who can munch they way through our dining area.&nbsp;<br class=\"\"><\/p>\n<blockquote type=\"cite\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"B4A55647-ACD9-45EF-BBC6-F83753D9B4DC\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/IMG_9194-872-rotated.jpg\"><br class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"E063DC84-E4AF-4D5D-945B-A1C8F761E879\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/IMG_9198-872-rotated.jpg\"><br class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"BEABF0A4-5EAD-4B77-A361-FC6D94591496\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/IMG_9199-872-rotated.jpg\"><br class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"E5487E7C-4D0D-4701-A9DC-C5702C07828C\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/IMG_9200-872-rotated.jpg\"><br class=\"\"><br class=\"\">Milk weed gets a little ugly about now. &nbsp;Other creatures chew at the leaves. &nbsp;But<br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Monarch larvae when and if they appear are obvious and systematic. &nbsp;Big fat larvae&nbsp;<\/p><\/div>\n<div>eventually appear.<\/div>\n<div><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div>Big question<\/div>\n<div>&nbsp; How much time do they need to eventually emerge as Monarch butterflies.<\/div>\n<div>This is the beginning of Sept. &nbsp;October comes fast as does the frost. &nbsp;Is there<\/div>\n<div>enough time left? &nbsp; Then they have the long flight to Mexico or part way there.<br class=\"\"><\/p>\n<blockquote type=\"cite\" class=\"\"><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"E3349321-BFDC-455D-8ABD-387581E43775\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/IMG_9195-872-rotated.jpg\"><br class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<h2 style=\"box-sizing: border-box; font-family: prozadisplaylight; line-height: 1.1; color: var(--bottle-green); margin-top: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; font-size: 1.9em; text-align: center;\" class=\"\">Monarch Butterfly Population in 2020-21<\/h2>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 10px;\" class=\"\">How would you go about counting North America\u2019s monarch butterfly population? Scientists can\u2019t count each and every butterfly. Instead they count the area of land occupied by the monarchs in their Mexican over-wintering habitat.&nbsp; The 2020-2021 Monarch Butterfly Report below shows only 2.1 hectares, down from 6.05 hectares just 2 years ago. It\u2019s one of the lowest acreage numbers for the winter population in 20 years. Entomologists believe that Monarch survival requires at least 15 acres of wintering butterflies annually. The situation is dire. For thousands of years (since the last ice age) monarch butterflies have taken refuge here during the winter. Unfortunately the area is being logged illegally, causing catastrophic destruction to monarch habitat. Vermont Woods Studios has partnered with the non-profit&nbsp;<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forestsformonarchs.org\/how-to-get-involved\/donate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; background-color: transparent; color: var(--bottle-green); text-decoration: none;\" class=\"\">Forests for Monarchs<\/a>&nbsp;to replant the area with native trees.
