{"id":10346,"date":"2021-08-30T07:57:00","date_gmt":"2021-08-30T11:57:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/?p=10346"},"modified":"2021-09-09T07:50:35","modified_gmt":"2021-09-09T11:50:35","slug":"episode-420-black-walnut-tree-ans-a-lirtle-mystery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/?p=10346","title":{"rendered":"EPISODE 420     BLACK WALNUT TREE&#8230;ANS A LIRTLE MYSTERY"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>EPISODE 420 &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;BLACK WALNUT TREE AND A LITTLE MYSTERY<\/p>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">alan skeoch<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">August 2021<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">This glorious Black Walnut tree stands where once the Freeman back house stood.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Rich soil in other words. &nbsp;My grandmother, Louisa Freeman, told me when I was<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">a little squirt that I had planted the tree. &nbsp;Maybe I stayed too long in the<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">back house admiring alll the clippings pinned to the barnboard walls. &nbsp;Many featured<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">attractive girls promoting 1930\u2019s cars. &nbsp; It was the Cars the interested me\u2026.honestly.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Well, maybe not so honest. &nbsp;The girls were not difficult to &nbsp;look at. &nbsp;Did I drop walnuts<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">down the back house hole? &nbsp; Maybe.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"7AEFF2A5-905E-41FC-9708-AA3337E41807\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/GS4zkGgdTbuV4MI5QKRNyA_thumb_a1352-1.jpg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Pioneers coming from the United States\u2026principally Mennonites\u2026used walnut trees as the best guide to good<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">land. &#8216; The Trail of the Black Walnut\u201d &nbsp;is a book that says so.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Black Walnut trees are quite vicious. &nbsp;They exude a poison from their roots that kills any other tree that dares trespass<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">on their land. &nbsp; As you can see. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">A few years ago I planted both a black walnut tree and an \u2018axe handle tree\u2019 (forgot the proper name) too close together.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">They grew in harmony for a couple of decades until this year when the black walnut decided to kill its neighbour . And did so.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Makes me feel a little guilty since I have been hurling black walnuts along the fencerows on t he fifth line. My idea of planting somewhat<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">like Johny Appleseed\u2026been doing so for<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">years &nbsp; That makes me feel responsible &nbsp;for a few walnut groves on the Line.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">MYSTERY<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Why are our black walnut trees&#8230; &nbsp;We have many\u2026.why are they not festooned with parasitic larvae like so<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">many Fifth Line Walnuts trees are? &nbsp;Maybe the reason is simple\u2026i.e. Appreciation.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"64495CF9-E216-4C10-9697-A536EA977A6B\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_a1334.jpg\" class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"6A4B4F97-E554-4468-BEB1-541A4B5380D8\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_a1335.jpg\" class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"D183BE03-BF25-4661-BE37-2EAFF391A3EB\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_a1336.jpg\" class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">ONE LARGE SAD FACT<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">While Marjorie and I agree on most things, we differ on black walnut trees. &nbsp;She fins the wheelbarrow loads<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">of walnuts a pain in the butt. &nbsp;They \u2018thwack\u2019 her lawn mower brutally. &nbsp;And they attract the goddamn red<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">squirrels who spend a lot of time trying to figure way to chew their way into the farm house where they can<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">pile up a winter supply of walnuts as they do in the barn. &nbsp;Then they chew them into tiny bits that are strewn everywhere<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">and when the black outer casings get wet the stains are permanent. &nbsp; Not nice. Walnuts even have a paint named after them.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Walnut stain.
