I seen her coming out of the place where she kept her buggy and<\/div>\n<div>I could hear him crying in there and after a while I heard him begin as if he was splitting &nbsp;wood, That is<\/div>\n<div>the time I heard the blows and heard him crying,,,then on the 6th of November\u2026<\/div>\n<div>How do you place the date?<\/div>\n<div>I keep a journal<\/div>\n<div>Do you know what you were doing on &nbsp;6th of November?<\/div>\n<div>Digging potatoes . &nbsp; I heard Miss Findlay say &nbsp;\u201cGet up and get in there.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>How far away would you be?<\/div>\n<div>At my &nbsp;own house\u2014about 80 rods distant and I looked over and I seen her<\/div>\n<div>trailing him up the steps. She had him by the hands and had him on his back.<\/div>\n<div>By both hands and she was dragging him up head foremost.<\/div>\n<div>Yes.<\/div>\n<div><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div>CROSS EXAMINED BY MR. TUCKER<\/div>\n<div><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div>You Never saw her strike him during any of the three occasions,?<\/div>\n<div>A blow that would be heard at 80 rods would be sufficient to fell an ox.<\/div>\n<div>If you hit hard enough I suppose.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div>A blow heard 80 rods away would crush anything?<\/div>\n<div><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div>You knew she had a black colt?<\/div>\n<div>Yes<\/div>\n<div>And you knew the black colt was in the habit of &nbsp;chasing the boy?<\/div>\n<div>No, sir.<\/div>\n<div>Didn\u2019t you ever see it?<\/div>\n<div>No, sir, I seen him holding the horse in the field and never saw it offer to touch him.<\/div>\n<div>If she struck the black colt at that time instead of the boy that would account for the sound?<\/div>\n<div>That would not make the boy cry.<\/div>\n<div>If the colt were chasing the boy he would cry. He was simple in the head?<\/div>\n<div>A little simple perhaps.<\/div>\n<div>And is it not a fact that he had some kind of impediment in his windpipe so he made a noise when he breathed.<\/div>\n<div>I could not say. I didn\u2019t hear the noise when I was talking to him.<\/div>\n<div>You never went to complain to Miss Findlay ?&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div>NO,sir.<\/div>\n<div><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<blockquote type=\"cite\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div dir=\"auto\" style=\"word-wrap: break-word; -webkit-nbsp-mode: space; line-break: after-white-space;\" class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\">Mr, Mackay seemed to get worried. &nbsp;Mr. Tucker defended Rose Findlay by creating doubt.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Was it a horse she hit and not \u2018George Green? Was George simple minded?<\/p><\/div>\n<div>Did he have a voice impediment?<\/div>\n<div><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div>MR. MACKAY&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div>How would Miss &nbsp;Findlay react if you had interfered?<\/div>\n<div>She would have ordered me off the place.<\/div>\n<div>(In fact she did order the McKinley\u2019s off her farm)<\/div>\n<div>Is there anything at all plausible about the theory that the woman struck the black colt?<\/div>\n<div>No, sir. &nbsp;The Findlays would not strike a colt.<\/div>\n<div><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div>NOTE TO READERS IN 2021: &nbsp; THERE WERE MANY MORE WITNESSES CALLED TO TESTIFY IN &nbsp;1895<\/div>\n<div>MOST OF WHOM I HAVE IN MY ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT. &nbsp;TOO MANY. &nbsp;SO LET ME END THIS HORRIFIC<\/div>\n<div>STORY WITH THE TESTIMONIES OF TWO 12 YEAR OLD CHILDREN WHO WORKED FOR MISS FINDLAY<\/div>\n<div>WHILE GEORGE GREEN WAS STILL ALIVE<\/div>\n<div><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div>ALEXANDER GILCHRIST, JUNIOR<\/div>\n<div><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div>Did you know George Green?<\/div>\n<div>yes<\/div>\n<div>Did you ever have any conversation with Miss Findlay as to how she used him?<\/div>\n<div>When she was doing the harvest she told me she got down off her load and gave him two bootings. How did she hold the axe handle?<\/div>\n<div>She took it at the bottom of the axe handle and fetched it right down on his back between the shoulders.<\/div>\n<div>How high did she raise it?<\/div>\n<div>Over the shoulder<\/div>\n<div>Did the boy cry?<\/div>\n<div>Yes.<\/div>\n<div>Did she strike him with anything else other an axe handle?<\/div>\n<div>Yes, a pitch fork.<\/div>\n<div>What part of the pitchfork?<\/div>\n<div>With &nbsp;prongs of the fork.<\/div>\n<p>Where?<\/p>\n<div class=\"\">Between the shoulders on the back.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">How did she hold the fork?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Just by the handle. Two hands, She raised it up and hit him on the back with it. &nbsp;Hard.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">What did he say? Did he refuse to work?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">No. He was working only not fast enough for her.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Was he in the habit of giving her impudence or refusing to do what he was told?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">No sir. He was quiet. He would never speak unless spoken to.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">She was often striking him in the field and threatening to run the fork through him if he didn\u2019t hurry up<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Tell me now if you ever saw her strike him with anything else?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">She struck him with the broom handle and broke it.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Where was this?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">I didn\u2019t see it as I was in the bedroom but she told me se broke the broom over his back.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">You heard him yelling\u2026crying?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">He just cried hard.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Anything else? &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">We were unloading wood and a stick he threw bounced and hit my shoulder . She jumped off the rig<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">and started pounding him with her fist. &nbsp;Then she took off her rubber boot and was pounding him with that.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Do you remember an incident around the pump?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Yes &nbsp; &nbsp;But I was not there. She told me she hit him with her slipper and a naIL cut his head.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">You saw his head bleed?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Yes.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Was he crying<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Not when I got there but he might have been crying.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Was there any other occasion that you recollect?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Yes, with a table fork. I was outside the door when she struck him with the table fork. &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp;There was blood on his cheek when he came out. &nbsp; The fork was lying there broken.\u2019<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">I never saw it broke until she struck him. &nbsp;Blood was running down his cheek when I went in.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">She never said anything about it.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">You were in his bedroom from time to time throughout the three months you were there?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Yes<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Did you ever make George\u2019s bed up?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">No sir.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Did you ever know her to make it up?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">No sir.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Do you recollect anything being the matter with George before he took sick in bed? &nbsp;Take<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">his fingers for instance.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">As far as I know his fingers got sore when the first snow came.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">It would be a month or so ago<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">What do you mean by his fingers got sore?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">The skin all came off.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">From the first joints to the points?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Yes.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">What about his nails.?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Well I saw one of his nails come off when we were splitting kindling &nbsp;wood.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Did you ever see Miss Findlay take him into the house?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">I saw Miss Findlay dragging him up the steps a week before he died.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">How did she drag him?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Well, I thought she took him by the collar<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">The week that he was sick\u2026the week he died?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Was there ever a doctor called?<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">No sir<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Who took care of him? She told me I was to tell the same thing as I told in Big Bay.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">CONCLUSION<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">I HAVE DECIDED TO END THESE EPISODES ABOUT GEORGE GREEN WITH THE &nbsp;TESTIMONY<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">OF MARY BROWN WHO, YOU WILL REMEMBER, WAS ONLY 12 YEARS OLD IN THAT TERRIBLE<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">SUMMER AND FALL OF 1895. &nbsp; MUCH MORE COULD BE SAID. &nbsp;LIKE THE CONDITION OF GEORGE&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">GREEN\u2019S BED IN THE WEEK HE DIED. &nbsp;THE BED WAS \u2018IMPROVED\u2019 ONCE BY THE ADDITION&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">OF DIRTY STRAW FROM THE STABLE. &nbsp;GEORGE GREEN\u2019S CLOTHING WAS FILTHY BUT<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">HE HAD NO OTHER CLOTHES. &nbsp;THE BODY &nbsp;OF GEORGE GREEN WAS FOUND CURLED UP<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">IN A NEST OF DIRTY STRAW . FOULED BY GEORGE AS HE LAY DYING.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">THIS TESTIMONY STARTLED MANY CANADIANS AS THE TRIAL PROCEEDINGS WERE &nbsp;REPORTED<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">BY NEWSPAPERS ACROSS CANADA.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">MARY BROWN\u2019S TESTIMONY IS MUCH LONGER THAN I HAVE QUOTED BUT I THINK<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">READERS HAVE HAD ENOUGH OF THIS HORROR.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">THE JURY COULD NOT AGREE. &nbsp;A hung jury.
