We had &nbsp;criteria. &nbsp;We had &nbsp;doubts that Old England existed anymore.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">1) Old &nbsp;England had &nbsp;to be found within a two &nbsp;hour &nbsp;drive of London.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">2) Old &nbsp;England would have ancient roadways \u2026 narrow and &nbsp;deeply incised with towering oaks obscuring the sun.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">3) Old England had to have &nbsp;tiny villages with wood &nbsp;bedecked bars &nbsp;and &nbsp;easy access to ancient ales.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">4) Old &nbsp;England had &nbsp;to have slate or tile roofed barns with pigeon &nbsp;roosts &nbsp;and at least one large guard dog<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">5) Old England &nbsp;had to have lots of horses of all ages<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">6) Old England &nbsp;had to have rain otherwise the deep green of the countryside could not thrive.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">7) &nbsp;Old &nbsp;England &nbsp;had &nbsp;to have wild creatures co existing with domesticated creatures.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">8) Old &nbsp;England &nbsp;had to have a sense &nbsp;of &nbsp;mystery, even tension.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">9) Old England must serve roast beef &nbsp;with Yorkshire Pudding and trimmings&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">So we &nbsp;drove &nbsp;westward from Muswell Hill and &nbsp;Crouch End towards the hills of &nbsp;Surrey. &nbsp;We passed &nbsp;beneath the thundering jetways of Heath Row international airport which raised doubts that Old England could be found. &nbsp;Not to worry.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp;The deeper we got into Surrey the narrower &nbsp;were the roads and the more mysterious the land appeared as large oak trees spread their branches. &nbsp;These were the same oaks that were harvested as timbers for the British Navy and the clipper ships that took our kin to Canada long years ago. &nbsp;\\<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">The road became a time tunnel. &nbsp;These were medieval roads unchanged save by a skiffle of asphalt.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"07054600-0D29-49A3-946A-4E7BBCB583CE\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_95140.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"17727CBE-3B72-4D89-A74C-B7778D720E29\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_951c9.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"B1B3B61E-A4A9-4F83-9F83-5D800ADE9CE8\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_95141.jpeg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">This trip was becoming mysterious&#8230;magical. &nbsp; Our very own &nbsp;time machine. &nbsp;These &nbsp;same &nbsp;roads had been travelled &nbsp;by Romans long long ago<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">and centuries later medieval carts &nbsp;had rumbled along in those long ages when most people lived on tiny farms and never ever saw big cities.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"22998B46-60FE-46E8-BCE2-E46DF5B8FAF9\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_95184.jpeg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"4A1890B0-F514-40B8-811B-47CB0F6C6FB5\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/cDA15U7QTGYUPQXawmpTA_thumb_95184.jpeg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Then we cut through a leafy laneway where an ancient farm was protected by this Rhodesian &nbsp;Ridgeback, a dog whose breed &nbsp;reputation was unsavoury &nbsp;But<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">this guy was lonely\u2026glad to see us.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"D2242934-0592-455C-B91E-B0043C6C544E\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_95194.jpeg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"59367719-674D-429B-87CC-6F8B08ECF127\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_95179.jpeg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Looks like a pigeon apartment building. &nbsp;Likely is. &nbsp;There was a time when the gentry enjoyed &nbsp;a &nbsp;plate of baby pigeons when fine &nbsp;dining. &nbsp;Probably why<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">they &nbsp;drank so much &nbsp;and got that foot disorder called gout. &nbsp; Subnamed \u201crevenge of the pigeons\u201d &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"E812A5E8-E185-4088-9C00-BA149A02AEBA\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_9519b.jpeg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Now &nbsp;this &nbsp;is &nbsp;really Old England. &nbsp;Look at the &nbsp;roof of the barn dead centre\u2026heavy red tiles sloping almost down &nbsp;to the ground. &nbsp;Those white doorways &nbsp;were<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">once homes &nbsp;of &nbsp;small domestic animals\u2026pigs perhaps. &nbsp;The harvest barn designed for a &nbsp;team of horses with a wood &nbsp;wagon &nbsp;piled high with air dried &nbsp;hay &nbsp;or<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">hand tied sheaves &nbsp;of grain ready for hand &nbsp;threshing. &nbsp;Old England. &nbsp;Is that Thomas &nbsp;Hardy peering through the title window on the left? &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"623A043C-7170-4E2C-BB4C-796A161FBB8D\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_95172.jpeg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"DD09DF9C-FF30-4376-9C61-6C37C468761E\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_95173.jpeg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">The intense &nbsp;oak doors to the threshing floor are studded with heavy hand &nbsp;made bolts (nalls&gt;) . &nbsp;Must be a reason. Escapes me though. &nbsp;Maybe the doors<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">were stolen from a moated castle long gone.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"86FF5793-FD2B-4C4B-AA46-7117DABDE7FD\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_95171.jpeg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">A couple of thousand red tiles &nbsp;artfully arranged on the roof. &nbsp;Only oak &nbsp;framing could hold this roof in place. &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"E6DF0714-1AAC-4D71-8242-393B921569B8\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_9515a.jpeg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Eureka! &nbsp;The horses! &nbsp; Gabriela pulled &nbsp;aside a plank door incised &nbsp;in a huge pilaff square hay bales. &nbsp;And there they were. &nbsp;the foals\u2026Five of &nbsp;them. Tucked away a modern corrugated iron exercise barn. &nbsp;Tow belonged to Nolan and Gabriela.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp;\u201cWhy two? Was one &nbsp;foal not enough? Why buy a second one?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cI was afraid &nbsp;he &nbsp;would &nbsp;be lonely.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u2018but there are five here\u2026all this years &nbsp;foals.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cI did not know that at the time.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u2018Are they expensive?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cThat tanned coloured one certainly is \u2026 worth 30,000 pounds\u2026$50,000 dollars.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cYou paid that for a foal?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cNo mine were very cheap\u2026not everyone wants a foal.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cWhat happens to unwanted foals.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cLet\u2019s not go there, Alan.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">(end of &nbsp;conversation) &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"2F6C5C24-0AA5-43F6-9A93-06F863DBC441\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/mGX7XLocRZWFDTifCQCFYw_thumb_95168.jpeg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cIs htis the $50,000 foal\u2026colt is better name &nbsp;now\u2026getting bigger.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cYes, beautiful. &nbsp;Rare colour\u2026reason for price.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cIs he &nbsp;going to bite Marjorie?\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\u201cDon\u2019t you know difference between nuzzling and &nbsp;biting, Alan. He got quite agitated.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">See that white rail fence? &nbsp;Well, he got up to speed and &nbsp;took a gallop right at the fence\u2026then flew in the air clearing all &nbsp;three rails &nbsp;and &nbsp;landing on spongy creek<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">bed just below. &nbsp;Being an &nbsp;expert rider I leaned &nbsp;forward when we cleared the &nbsp;rails. &nbsp;Then we splashed our way up a creek doing threes and &nbsp;jumping boulders.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">George knew I &nbsp;was &nbsp;boss by then. &nbsp;Fearlessly we climbed through the pastures &nbsp;going at a clip so fast that it seemed we were doing the steeplechase at<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Epson Downs\u2026with the Queen watching and &nbsp;Philip cussing. &nbsp;\u201cWho is that ass &nbsp;on Georg? Rides like a western cowboy\u2026giving George the Go Go &nbsp;Go with his &nbsp;knees in the ribs. &nbsp;The bastard &nbsp;might win for God\u2019s sake and &nbsp;my money is &nbsp;on another, damn it.\u201d &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Imagination is a wonderful thing.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Really tis is &nbsp;Kevin exercising George in the show ring. &nbsp;I was safe cowering behind the fence.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><br class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" apple-inline=\"yes\" id=\"4932BEE0-59E9-414E-9813-9840B56FB3EE\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/alanskeoch.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_951c2.jpeg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">All the horses on this &nbsp;farm were cared for by a man and a &nbsp;woman who rented &nbsp;the barns.
