THE UNDERSIDE OF TORONTO AS LIVED BY MIKE IKEDA

    alan skeoch
    october 9, 2025

“My mother would shred some white bread and put it in a bowl with milk and sugar. That would be dinner some nights. Other nights we got one egg each.”, said Mike

Ikeda as he reminisced about living Parkdale in the 1960’s.  He has lived his whole life in the shadowy underside of 31 countries but he has not

forgotten Parkdale CI and Cebrynsky, the Vice Principal that suspended him…Grade Ten was the end of his life as a scholar in the formal sense.   Too bad really.  Mike could have been another John Steinbeck or Hugh Garner.

Yesterday Marjorie and I sat on a park bench with Mike Ikeda at Parkdale Collegiate. (October 8, 2025)
“I had a great time meeting you and Marjorie yesterday.”, said Mike as he remembered what happened to him decades ago. He was not bitter

which surprised me.  He was upbeat, full of laughter and wonderfull stories.like the day “Drago scored a bag of marijuana  and dumped the

bag on the table for his friends to roll.

    “Top grade stuff boys…help yourselves.”
“looks like tea leaves crumbled to me,” said Mike Ikeda who had just been suspended from PCI.
“Not so, this is the best…light up.”  And so they did. Fifteen year old tough Parkdale kids. Poverty home lives.
“Tastes like tea leaves!”  they agreed with Mike.
some laughed.  Drago did not laugh.  He planned to get even.

WHO IS MIKE IKEDA — AND WHY SHOULD I CARE ANYWAY

Mike Ikeda was not one of my students at Parkdale.  Wish that were not so. I like to think I would have
rescued him from a lifetime on the run.  Maybe…maybe not.  Mike grew up in poverty.  He had to work
or starve.  His mother, who he felt sorry for, had fled from North Bay just after her mother died and
her father suggested  “You will have to assume wifely duties if you plan to stick around here.” She knew
what that meant so fled south to the seedy Parkdale part of West Toronto.  No education. No skills.
No future.  That defined the rest of her life. Mike and his sister came along in due course. His father
was a Japanese cook and gambler…an itinerant father who spent his time and his money with horses at
Woodbine and Dufferin racetracks.  So Mike’s mom was on her own with two kids to raise and no
income.  So she often had to live on strips of bread soaked in milk.

My role in Mike’s life is minor.  I did recognize he knew the underside of Toronto
and said ‘mike, why don’t you write your life story.  You have seen and done things that most Canadians
    could only imagine.’

So Mike did. He cloistered himslef away and wrote this 800 page biography.   HE is now living
in a toronto homeless shelter.  Everything he owns can be fitted into a/ locker.   Does Mike feel sorry for himself.  Not in the least but he knows he will have to pack up soon. “Too expensive to live here.”

I cannot put the book down — just read the first 120 pages about Parkdale and the Green Dolphin.

EPSODE 1,434:  ARE FEMALES REALLY SMARTER THAN MALES

    WOMEN ARE SMARTER THAN MEN.
HarD to admit but I think it’s true. I base my conclusion on the card game called bridge which most of the women I know
play constantly.   Even in bed. Why? They like men but the sad fact is that  they outlive most men.
So women socialize more … they are less lonely.

And they are wiser than many men. Why do you think that women are so wise?  Simple.  One of calls in bridge is NO TRUMP!!!

  • EPISODE 1,458: AVOCADO SUPREME RECIPE (AND SIDE COMMENTS)

AVOCADO SUPREME RECIPE (AND SIDE COMMENTS)

    penny barr

THIS recipe below is delicious.  I am fully aware it could be brutally  edited
but that would destroy the character of Penny Barr who is willing to
shop around just to save a nickel, dime or quarter while spending
two or three dollars on gas.  while exiting her garage, Penny smashed her side mirror…add
$250 or so to the cost of this avocado supreme.

Penny Barr has boundless enthusiasm for this avocado dessert.  Just a small point
to underscore.  Be sure and cover the avocado with a dusting of cocoa.  Otherwise the
avocado green will turn to a disgusting black.

Now read below for Penny’s Avocado Supreme recipe.

    RECIPE TESTING — MARJORIE SKEOCH

Took a year to play around with this. I originally zested fresh limes and squeezed them but took too long and too hard! I make triple the recipe!  It makes 7-9 bigger servings.

In a blender dump 3/4 c rolled oats.  Blend, scrape down, until fine. Then add 2 large or 3 smaller bananas, 3 ripe avocados (dark when ripe and when pinched they gives a bit). Fluids: Around 3/4 c real lime juice (I use No Frills no name).1/2 c milk. 6 generous TBSP Maple Syrup (Walmart cheapest dark $15.76), 3 + TBSP vanilla. Blend well (may have to stir and/or add more milk.

Pour into small round glasses reserving maybe 1/2 to 3/4 c of  the mixture in the blender. Add to blender 1 TBSP cocoa powder… but mix in first with spoon so it does not spread all over the glass. If you think you don’t have enough add a bit of milk so it speads easily. Then spoon a bit over each portion in the glass covering the green totally, and cover with a small piece of plastic. (I wash my plastic and reuse… remember my name!) Refrigerate… they disappear fast so I have no idea how long they last. Al Skeoch had his first for dinner one night.. and then demanded an encore for lunch next day! I guarded the refrigerator all morning…

When serving, add a dollop of yoghurt (I like Activia lemon flavoured) and a sprinkle of chopped walnuts toasted 5 minutes in a 350 oven.  I suggest you toast a huge number at a time…guarantee this recipe gets repeated ad infinitum.

    ORIGINAL RECIPE

Avocado Chocolate Breakfast Trifle from Jamie Oliver

My version to follow with way more limes and double sized! Oink.  KAthleen Hunter from NH Made these for me last June when I flew down to see her.  We went to Downsview CI together 1955-57.

  • EPISODE 1,416: LORD BYRON VISITS EYWOOD OCTOBER 25, 1812 — A COMPLICATED SCANDAL

NOTE:  This episode describes one scandalous event that happened in 1812 at Eywood, the 1500 acre coutry estate owned by Lord and Lady
Oxford.  It happened long before my grandfather, EdwardFreeman became head gardener at Eywood.  He would, however, have been
told of the indiscretions of Lady Oxford.  Perhaps amused by the skuttlebut.  I decided to dig a little deeper into the story.  And that led
to Lord Byron, one of England’s most famous poets.  The story is nasty and convoluted.  Disgusting? Amusing? Waste of time.?

  • salute to PAUL CARON who died Friday August 15, 2025

FOND MEMORIES OF PAUL CARON – September 1999.

IT was a delightful summer afternoon when we pulled our rent a car
up beside a roadside picnic bench in the south of France.  Paul and Denise Caron
, Marjorie and AlanSkeoch had retired from the classroom.  Paul pulled the cork from a
bottle ofFrench wine…Denise and Marjorie unwrapped cheese and warm baguettes. And we made a  toast to the staff and students of Parkdale collegiate
backin Toronto.  We had retired and planned this celebration.   There was the smell of autumn in the air.  We bought the wine at a French gas station choosing upscale wine rather than the wine suggested by the owner. His
garden hose wine was  little too cheap . …about a buck a bottle (used bottle) and cork it ourselves.  Not fitting our toast to Parkdale students and staff.  Denise and Marjorie had been Parkdalians as much as we had been..

My favorite memory of Paul was at one of our rock and roll Parkdale assemblies in which Paul re -enacted a tune by Jerry Lee Lewis.
      He added a twist.   He played the piano backwards…his hands behind his back.   Jumping as only jerry and Paul could do;
    The students went wild.
